An environmentalist on Breakfast TV today said that humans should not keep dogs as pets because they needlessly expel methane which contributes global warming..
Cattle do the same but at least we eat them..
Cows or dogs ? You decide |

We humans defenitly we contributed for the global warming , we are the ones to blame not any other animal species , global warming is human creation |

This is a tricky one. I mean, at least if I had a cow it would mow my lawn and I'd hopefully get some milk. Taking it for a walk down my street is going to be a challenge though as the footpath is not exactly generous. Then, there's the matter of picking the poop up. Nobody takes a shovel and a bin liner out when they walk their pet Pomeranian. |

Global warming and climate change is natural it always was and is going to happen, but it is greatly accelerated by human creation and interventions. |

You’re late to this party Tom. This thread has been done. On a more positive note, I’m glad you’re back, I was worried when someone else posted this story before you, the world felt strangely surreal. |

"I do wonder how much Methan an elephant puts up compared to a cow" Not as much compared to the poisons released into the atmosphere that the elephant killers add to, flying around the world to hunt in the name of sport.

Amazing to think elephants are the only animals that can sneeze around a corner. "
I'm never going to be able to look at an elephant without thinking of that ever again. |

Cant be a sport Tom, that’s defined as “a game between two or more willing participants” unless of course the elephants agreed |

I think all have to be “willing” Tom, not just the two chromosomal deficients with high powered velocity rifles trying to make up for the lack of control and sex in their life. |

Watching Breakfast Television needlessly contributed to carbon emissions and we should all stop doing it.
Humanity can just get in the sea. Most of what we do is pointless and a waste of resources. |

"And game designers...would hunting wild beasts make a great PS4 or XBox game
And what would the age limit be?"
There are already loads of them.
Like "The Hunter: Call of the Wild".
It's rated as a 16, and had an average review score of 75% |

People, people, hold on, slow down about the elephant shooters. I always like to shoot down the elephant in the room with a good chin wag. |

An environmental expert on TV today called dog owners selfish about global warming"
Don’t see much point in a pet myself Tom, I’ve got wild animals all around. But I think they offer comfort to the lonely and they probably aren’t as bad as SUVs being driven down the high street to take little felicity the 800m to school over the “rough terrain” of a tarmac road. |

Apparently in total 'all' pets contribute 64 million tonnes of CO2 per year. That is the equivalent of 13 million cars.
Interestingly using a phone and sending emails has quite a large impact too.
They have calculated that a single buisness user will likely generate 135Kg of CO2 on one yet 'just' by sending, receiving and reading emails. That's the equivalent driving 200 miles.
That suprised me, but doesn't seem to bad but then it turns out that all the spam emails sent around the world contribute 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year
So let's keep the dogs, as they have mental benefits to many people and kill the spam as that does nobody any good. |

The methane I put out few Saturday mornings ago after a curry and 5 pints of guiness is responsible for the wild fires that were going on the other week. |

"I have the question but no solution...
But should dogs be limited to one per household to prevent global warming?"
Yes, limiting one dog to one house will sort global warming in a heartbeat, I don’t know why the worlds global warming experts didn’t think of this sooner. |

Maybe.
Or maybe we could attach 'methane catchers' to their butts and use that to power our cars! |

How do you 'needlessly' expel methane - surely said expulsion is extremely necessary ? Let's stick a cork up this pound shop Attenborough's bottle and glass for a few days then ask him about necessity ! |

It is not the methane an individual dog produces, it is their diet that is the problem. An average dog eats about 5 times more meat than a human and it is the production of this meat that causes problems. Pets eat about a fifth of the meat and fish produced. An average sized dog causes about 770 kg of CO2e per year. |

An excellent proposal for a scientific experiment! May I suggest a slight tweak to the protocol? Include a shark, a crocodile, a rat, a dog and an elephant in the experiment. Stopper up their gas pipes too, put the experimental subjects all in a shared space and see who survives the night |

I think there’s still a lot to learn and people need to be shown a few Pointers on the best way to cut down on their carbon footprint. |
