How many careers have you had?
Was watching a programme yesterday and one guy had been a footballer, personal trainer and now a jeweller.
Does the word career have the same meaning as in years gone by?
Where I work now certain jobs were seen as jobs for life but now they are merely stepping stones or holding jobs for bigger and better (although a number of them come crawling back when they realise the grass isn't greener). |

I’ve been an engineer for 20 years but in various fields. As part of that I was a humanitarian for 15 years. Before that my first job out of school was with the MOD as an apprentice but then I upsticks and did lots of little jobs, before training in cellar management and being a bar manager all over the world. Finally going to university for the first time when I was 27 (I have been back 2 subsequent times since then, I’ve squashed a lot into my years).
So when it comes to careers I would say
Civil servant
Bar manager
Humanitarian/Engineer
Engineer
I’m not sure I would qualify my time in academia as a career. |

I'd probably say the only job I'd personally class as a career is my business (unfortunately on hold until things open up again). Otherwise they've just been jobs. Those same jobs are careers for other people. No judgment on the people or the jobs, just different wants or priorities. They're interested in progressing in the job as a career long term. I'm just doing it for money and my long term focus is elsewhere. |

"Jobs; loads.
Careers; two.
Good point.... What is the difference between a job and a career? At what point does your job become your career? "
Think when you have done it for long time been in the security industry now since early 2000 so think it no classes as career |

I think if you seek advancement or have a long term goal/path within your chosen profession That’s a career. If you are static and can’t progress or don’t have a goal within what you do, that’s a job. |

So, for sake of argument, a road sweeper who has no aspirations for road sweeping management but does the role for 20 years is just doing a job for 20 years? Even if they've had innavative ideas to change the role, made significant improvements etc? |

Ah but the innovation and improvements are “advancements” and therefore form a “career”. Perhaps? I think a job is something to pay the bills and just that, you do what’s available to put bread on the table. A career is something, perhaps, you wouldn’t want to leave, because you enjoy doing it or are emotionally invested in it, and/or have a clear path to higher achievement.
Just thoughts. |

I’ve had/have one career, which I take to mean working in a specific area/field and moving up through related roles which equip you with more experience and knowledge in said field/area.
In terms if jobs I’ve too many to remember. Worked since I was 17 and worked full time through university. I’d love to take a gap year but it’s too late now |

I work in care and have cared for many over many years. When my children were young I packed shelves for 5years on the nightshift at a well known supermarket. This was by far the hardest job I ever had. |

My Army career ended early due to medical discharge, after which I sent myself to college and became an Engineer. I am still involve in an Engineering career but a different field than I studied for at college. So in some cases people may change their careers depending on life changes or interests. |
