"Electricity.
I thought about that, but isn't it a discovery? "
Not really, it was invented as a means to produce light I believe to replace gas lighting.
The equipment that it was first produced by had to be invented. |

Just googled it and I stand corrected, I guess the engineers mind in me thinks more along the lines of man's first harnessing of a natural phenomenon. |

that facilitates the dissemination of beneficial information worldwide, and communication with like-minded individuals."
But for any invention does the 'good' outweigh the 'bad'? |

Ah, then that's not electricity but the machine that generated it (yes, I know, I'm being a pedant ) |

Glass which has given us see to the microscopic level and out to the stars. It’s helped to cure diseases. It’s helped us travel our own planet and to others. These days it’s even helping us communicate in the blink of an eye over huge distances. To name but a few |

I like the Casio F-91W watch for the simple fact that it's the only electrical item I can think of that is still being sold nearly 30 years after it was first introduced. It gives 2 fingers to companies like Apple and their planned obsolescence. |

That's a product, not a specific model. That watch has sold unaltered for nearly 3 decades. |

Glass and all of its ingredients, namely sand!
From the Earth: light
Never mind the Stone, Iron and Bronze ages. Douglas Adams wants science and history teachers to stop looking at metals as a way of measuring time and look at glass instead, as this is so important, that it is the true game changer.
If the Chinese had worked out the wonders of sand, then life would have been so much different....
The Ages of Sand is Adam's description of the technological changes humanity went through and how those changes broadened our understanding.
The first age is that of astronomy, when we looked at the stars and realised our belief that the Earth is the center of the universe was false.
The second age is of the microscopic, when we looked down at the tiny formations that make life and the universe and found something quite startling.
The third age is that of computers- the silicon chip which gave us process. The computer can perform mathematics very fast and this allows us to create models, simulations. This gave us another form of perspective as where can see how life works with these models and simulations.
The fourth age of sand is the one we are entering, is that of the Internet. This runs on fibre-optics and is the fourth form of communication many-to-many (the other three being, one-to-one (telephone for example), one-to-many (broadcasting, journalism, etc) and many-to-one (democracy is a model of this).
RIP Douglas, whose initials were in fact DNA.
The Age of Sand concept came about in a speech Douglas Adams gave at the Digital Biota 2, in Cambridge."Is there an artificial god?" was a discussion about God and the impact the concept had on humanity (this speech is featured in The Salmon of Doubt). |

How so
Everything has them in them
Think about the components in all electric good seen loads off comments about goods and stuff
But at they hart they are all run off microchips
"
Ok, completely geeky, but ...
Go smaller. A microchip has lots of inventions in it to make different aspects work. What are they all based on? Transistors made from semiconductors. |

If we going that way then it’s sand that’s the king to make the silicone to put those transistors in to |

But the conversation off sand to silicon isn’t silicon isn’t a nartual material it’s man made so someone had to invent it |

Antibiotics has allowed more of us the freedom to have fuller lives. Naturally occurring and harnessed by us.
Latterly used with too much abandon, meaning that we may lose out, without adequate new ones. Unlike many before me, I have lived a longer, healthier life which wouldn't have been possible without them. |
