Talk of banning this practice in the UK. It is utterly wrong for families to force this practice on people. Utterly wrong. But what if the person actually really wants to undergo the treatment. Should there be allowances for this? |

Conversation therapy is basically legal torture.
And no. I don't think you can make allowances for personal choice because often the person is choosing because their family is insisting on it.
A person's sexuality is not something you should mess with. |

If the person wants to be converted, it’s because of the pressure placed on them by others.
A person is born gay, straight, bisexual, etc. If they’re made to believe that it’s wrong, then that’s on those forcing those beliefs.
Conversation therapy is wrong, brutal and it doesn’t work!
We should be teaching society that differing sexualities are normal and to be celebrated not tortured out of someone |

As much as I’m against conversion therapy, if someone offered me a pill that would take my desires to crossdress away I’d seriously consider it. As much as I take some amount of pleasure from it I do wish it would go and l could then live a normal life.
To counter this I do wonder what would then take over as a guy, especially younger, as I would go out of my way to prove my manliness. Would I just turn into a guy who’s constantly trying to be overtly macho and trying too hard to be respected or even feared.
So after ‘successfully’ converting these people what are they then, happy and content or something worse than the people they were prior to the conversion ? |

Post conversion subjects are like people recovering from addiction. As far as I’m aware, they’re essentially brainwashed into het relationships but are always fighting their nature |

Exactly, I have fought my feminine side for most of my life and felt shame about it. But it’s intrinsically a part of me, so as no pill exists I have learned to live with it and be comfortable with who I am. More content with myself the older I get.

I’ve answered that.
Anyone that claims to want it is doing so due to external pressure.
LGBTQ+ people don’t naturally not want to be that way, it’s being told that it’s wrong by society that makes them feel that way |

Because it cannot be treated as an illness that can be cured! No amount of prayer, therapy, exorcisms and other horrendous things related to this can change someone’s sexuality. It’s disgusting that we are even sat here discussing this. It shouldn’t even be a thing! |

Totally think it should be banned, for all the reasons that have been mentioned. Can only begin to imagine fir someone to go through that, and by your family and friends. I find it very sad also that there are some people who are in complete denial over their sexualtiy and who go seek this "treatment" hoping to wake up a "normal straight person". |

I think it’s a form of brainwash and you cant run away from your nature. It’s an natural and eventually it always catches up so I don’t understand why u would want to go through such a torturous path ...
I think they still exist in US and are fully legal, they did films about it recently with Nicole Kidman. It’s heart breaking |

Playing devils advocate on this is a bit tasteless.
Anyone that wants to go for it should go for counselling. Conversion therapy is based on the assumption that non cis het people are unnatural, that isn’t something that comes from someone internally. Heterosexual people don’t believe that they’re unnatural so why would LGBTQ+ people unless it was impressed on them? |

Sexual orientation is a natural part of a person and not something that can be changed.
It seems to me that you’re reaching for something to make this more debatable.

1. It doesn’t work.
2. You can’t change who someone finds attractive or what their gender is.
3. It doesn’t work.
4. People only feel shame for who they are because of societal pressure.

I agree but trading that fun for the abuse, stigma and discrimination associated with being bi, given the choice?

I have a dark sense of humour, it gets me through the day. I'm certainly not treating it lightly.
It's very abusive and doesn't even need discussion in my opinion. It shouldn't exist. |

It's a discredited, dangerous process that the government has been dragging its feet over for years. It needs a simple piece of legislation creating, so there's no excuse for putting lives at risk.
People may want to have a different sexuality but they are much better being supported to love and accept themselves for who they are. Understanding and acceptance therapy should be the only permitted approach that should be the immediate offer from any institution. |
