Did make me scoff a bit when I read about the 22 school fields Mr Gove has decided to sell off.
Didnt hear Jeremy Vine or other interviews, but apparently Davey Cam was on Chris Evans the other morning raving about the Olymics and when questioned about selling the fields, there are just 2 fields that were actually in use by schools.
They have also said a few of the ones sold off are to be turned into sports facilities. (And mumbled about housing estates)
I know of at least one is getting turned into 5 a side pitches, shame they wont all have free access for kids to go and play, but guess they have to look at the upkeep etc.
OMG how ironic I have just defended them in regards to the upkeep
It must be too early |

"don't you think, a little too ironic......
Yesterday there was a feature on the Jeremy Vine show about the olympic legacy which the whole country will benefit from etc etc. Yet by the day the government/local govenment are selling off schools and playing fields to developers. My old high school in Widnes (Fairfield high school) which incidentally Mel C aka SPORTY SPICE also attended "now this is the ironic bit" it is now being sold off as to make way for a cemetary bearing in mind this was one the few schools in the town that had an all weather pitch, two gymnasiums and a field that had six football/rugby pitches so it would seem the "Olympic Legacy" stands for fuck all in "Sporty Spices" home town and in many other towns also after listening to that feature on the BBC "
There does seem t be a lot of mixed messages coming from the government. Selling off playing fields will just come back to haunt them when kids have no place to play outdoor sports. |

Heard DC on the Chris Evans show and the answer he gave was so down pat he must have had prior briefing of that question. The figure he gave is wrong. He said only 2 that were in use, well the councils that sell them off have a cunning trick of not maintaining the ground they'd like to sell so that they can claim its not in use.
Private Eye regularly has articles about them being sold off everywhere. |
