Today is Saint George's Day, Saint George being the Patron Saint of England
Sadly in England we do not celebrate our Patron Saint in the same way as the Scottish, Welsh and Irish celebrate their Patron Saints.
Hopefully I will see some red and white flags on my travels today. |

Saint George's Day, also called the Feast of Saint George, is the feast day of Saint George as celebrated by various Christian Churches and by the several nations, kingdoms, countries and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint including Bulgaria, England, Georgia, Portugal, Spain, Brazil.
Unfortunately, the white and red flag has been hijacked by some far right elements of our society and therefore has become a symbolism of racism and intolerance.  |

From my experience, St Patrick's day although it's Origen's where religious, it has become a day for Irish people to celebrate their nationality rather than any doctrine. The marketing of the day over the years has helped project this festive day as a joyous celebration where you can have a fair few pints of the black stuff and have the crack. We can all buy into this celebration.  |

St George was a Roman soldier born in what is now modern-day Turkey in around 280AD and died around 303. Very little is known about his early life but it is believed he was born to a wealthy Christian noble family. When he grew up he became a soldier and joined the retinue of Emperor Diocletian. |

You’re ‘aloud’ to celebrate whatever you want by the way. If you want to wave a red cross and harp on about a dead Turkish Christian, go nuts. But I would imagine Ireland, Scotland and Wales probably won’t for the same reason Poland don’t celebrate German national holidays.
True, most English celebrate St Patrick’s day more, but that’s because the Irish diaspora is one of the largest in the world (and national pride is always more vocal in those no longer in their country) but also Guinness have done a brilliant job of marketing it to young folk as a cracking night out. Bombardier have weakly marketed St George’s day to middle aged men as a day to stick a manky flag in your window and complain about it not being celebrated. |

Patron saint from the 14th Century to replace Edward the Confessor. No actual link to England except Edward III used him for the Order of the Garter symbolism. Also patron saint of 25 other countries. |

In my whole life, I’ve never known people to celebrate it and it’s only been in recent years that people ‘complain’ about not celebrating it.
The way that I see it is that if you feel a need to get blind d*unk, then go ahead, if you feel that this expresses your Englishness, fill your boots.
People complaining that they ‘can’t’ is more about comparison with other ‘patron saint’ days than anything else. It’s like guys complaining on international women’s day or straight folks complaining over pride. It’s less that people can’t, it’s more because others do. |

Wasn’t our entire point that people are absolutely allowed an opinion and to celebrate whatever obscure religious figure they like?
Saying you’re not allowed to do something which you obviously are isn’t an opinion, it’s just bullshit. And you’re totally allowed to spout bullshit about fictional laws forbidding you from sniffing a rose and drinking tea, but at least own the bullshit. And don’t use it to stir up discontent against demographics you’re pretending are forcing these fake laws. |

On a normal year, we'd be out this weekend in medieval clothes/armour celebrating.
Ok so he wasn't English - St. Patrick wasn't Irish, St. Andrew wasn't Scottish - but he was the patron Saint of soldiers, hence King Edward III adopting him for his new order of chivalry |

At least Saints David, Patrick, and Andrew actually visited the nations which give them patronage (although Andrew probably didn't, there are still a couple of legends that he did).
Anyway, I can't see the big deal. St Andrews day is barely a thing in Scotland - Burns night is a much bigger occasion. Paddy's day only became big in the 90s when Guinness got behind it. Before that it was pretty low key too. I don't know if the Welsh do much for St David's, but if they do you don't hear much about it. Seems like a lack of celebration on St George's day has just become another imaginary thing for people to moan about. |

Ah, I've heard of the Eisteddfodau - that sounds like a good way to celebrate national identity. And cawl a chan! If you like poetry (and even if you don't read much) there's an Argentinian/Welsh poet called Lynette Roberts who has a poem "Poem from Llanybri" which mentions it. It's a really beautiful poem. |

Sadly in England we do not celebrate our Patron Saint in the same way as the Scottish, Welsh and Irish celebrate their Patron Saints.

Guinness have a powerful PR company that works globally on making that day a gold mine for themselves.
I'd love to celebrate st George's day, but it just turns into an annual moan fest. Perhaps that's a very English trait. I'd rather have a party. Who's throwing one next year? |

It's a big thing in schools. Used to be a half day when I was a kid. It's al about the arts and drama. Poetry, singing, recitals. It's less about getting blind d*unk and wild partying, which is why there's less press about it! |

I think we should celebrate St George’s day in the same way we celebrate St Patrick’s day.However are we all comfortable celebrating someone that wasn’t English or even British he was Turkish.We should also respect that he is also the patron saint of Georgia , Spain , Brazil, Bulgaria , Portugal. |

what i find stranger than the folk that really feel the need to wave about their flag for a day that doesn’t have an official celebration
is the folks that are right perturbed by the fact he was turkish - since when did a patron saint ever have to be born in that country |

We always celebrate at George’s day. We start the day by blasting England oh England by the angelic upstarts and the festivities continue from there. I’m proud as fuck to be English |

St Andrew wasn't a Scot and St Paddy wasn't Irish. Only St David, of the 4, was born where he is venerated. Seems not a problem for the Jocks and Paddies. Every day a school day. |
