The Day of the Jackal starring Edward Fox, et al., from the early 1970s.
A masterpiece in timing, precision, preparation, serendipity, the old boy network, negotiation, planning, political rivalry, espionage, the end of colonialism, cooperative networks, treachery, technology, skills and much else besides.
Frederick Forsythe's book is good, but Fred Zinneman's film is better. |

"The Gentleman by Guy Ritchie. I thought it was quite good Really enjoyed that, great plot, some great twists and turn
Hugh Grant is really good in it."
Yeah I'm not normally a fan of him but thought he was hilarious |

The bit where he's ordering paints from an unsuspecting shop-woman is one part chilling and one part amusing. Even ruthless hired killers have to show patience in public when faced by over-worked shop assistants. |

Three Days of the Condor, from the mid-1970s.
A superb film that I have never seen on TV; it adumbrated the technological developments that now pervade our lives and involves political intrigue about the oil crisis. Robert Redford stars with Meryl Streep and Max Von Sydow.
A relatively unknown gem. |

It's a great film....only it's Faye Dunaway not Meryl Streep |

"Love and Monsters on Netflix. Tongue in cheek post apocalyptic monster movie, yes please.
I watched that last night. It was a fun movie lol "
That was our last one too. It had a lot of potential but was a little predictable and rush but generally a good popcorn feel good movie. Probably would have made a good mini series

We were glad it wasn't, some series take sooo long to actually do anything.

Ah yesterday I watched The Song of Names with Tim Roth and Clive Owen. Brilliant story and characters, but I felt like ending wasn't in balance. I'm missing something. Not saying more. No spoilers.
Prior to that Hillbilly Elegy. Fantastic role of Glen Close. Predictable end, but nice warming plot, American dream story of sorts. Glen has been Oscar nominated for that performance.
Both on Netflix. |

Song of Names added to my watchlist. Hillbilly Elegy is already on it.
Last film I watched was American Woman (NowTV) with Sienna Miller. She plays a young grandmother whose daughter disappears and it follows her life over the ensuing years. Good if you like understated 'slice of life' and character study type films. |

Not a film but I watched a programme on YouTube about seaside violence.
It started with this red nosed man throwing a baby, then when the mother arrived and told him off he picked up a stick and started beating her with it.
Next he had some sausages which I think were stolen and a dog snatched them off him so he started hitting the dog.
When the police arrived the red nosed man and the police started exchanging blows hitting each other with sticks and batons with the poor baby getting a few belts when the policeman's back was turned.
It was all kicking off |

The Pawel Pawlikowski film? I enjoyed My Summer of Love but not Cold War so much. Been in two minds about Ida. |

I watched an excellent film on Netflix last night - The Foreigner with Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan.
I'm not normally keen on action films but this was really thrilling with a good story line. |

"Jui Jitsu
Fucking awful I watched that last night, absolutely shite"
I watched it yesterday. Why do Hollywood stars think they are martial arts experts?
Another awful film on Netflix is Anti-Life with Bruce Willis.

Yes the fights were really believable because of Jackie Chan’s great skills. Pierce was good in his role as well. |

"The time travellers wife.
I cried buckets at the end (again ) "
I only read about half the book as it just didn’t grip me so gave the film a go and couldn’t watch that either. I don’t often enjoy films that flip backwards and forwards in time. |

Bruce Willis seems to churn out the same type of films over and over again in recent years. I started watching Hard Kill on Netflix and it was so awful I threw myself through the closed patio doors.
Even the posters are the same |

A film from 1951, that I can almost guarantee that no-one on this site has ever heard of, but which is worth watching.
The Franchise Affair starring the husband and wife team of Michael Denison and Dulcie Gray.
A young girl claims to have been held captive, the owners of the house are vilified and ostracised, but by detective work, it is proved that she was briefed by a disgruntled former housemaid to fabricate the story against the owners.
It is frequently broadcast on TPTV, Freeview channel 81.

Magic Mike. I am sad to say!
I just fancied watching the Full Monty again as that was a funny film, but Netflix didn't have that film available and showed me a list of similar movies to pick from.
Bellas film critique on Magic Mike....
Don't bother! Go onto YouTube and Google the Dreamboys if you fancy being titillated by some male strippers!

Jubal (1956)
An empathic cowboy arrives at a ranch in distress and cause jealousy in a ranchhand who wants rid of him, at any cost.
The owner's wife is promiscuous and is attacked, but Jubal proves who really attacked her; the jealous cowboy.
Jubal meets the love of his life and rides off to start a new life with her.
The film was made in the Grand Tetons where Shane was filmed.

It never comes close to rekindling the magic of Lock Stock and Snatch though...Guy Ritchie has lost his way! |
