Newry Down

The early 1970s which marked the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, the greatest number of murders having occurred in 1972.

Suffice to say it was not a pleasant time to have been a teenager.

For example, I was followed home from a friend's house by a group of men in a car and managed to get home by a circuitous route that impeded them; as I closed my front door a burst of machine gun fire could be heard outside.

Being blown up in a 'no warning' car bomb that wtecked my home, and left a large section of car in my bed; it had come through the window, bounced off the ceiling and came to rest beside me.

For particular reasons, my most memorable pop record from that time was: Run, Run, Run by JoJo Gun.

From an astronomical perspective I witnessed the famous Bovedi meteorite passing overhead and its incredible sonic boom, that is available online.

Grammar school was not a happy time;I was educated at a Christian Brothers school, where bullying was the norm!
