Was reading this on Net with all posts here about people lying on fab made me smile. Lying less can significantly improve your mental and physical health – and even stave off sore throats and headaches, a recent study has suggested.
The 'Science of Honesty' study, presented at the American Psychological Association, found that people who told fewer white lies, improved their overall health in just 10 weeks.

Its a well known fact people who are habitual are doing it for a reason. Some are unbalanced others a call for help. Personally I find people who consistently do it because they are unbalanced in the first place and lie due to that rather than lying causing it.

I think there are different types of liers. There are those that lie to seek attention, those that lie because their lives are boring and then there are the walter mitty kind who i think actually believe the lies they tell themselves and create a fantasy world |

Sadly I think there is a huge element of truth in that. |

"What about the ones who say that they didn't tell a lie, just didn't share the truth? It wasn't mis-direction just mis-communication?
"
.... they are not lying, just being economical with the truth. |

Sounds like my mother, when you challenge her, she either ignores you completely or says she never said it, and I think she has done it all her life |

Yes most definitely as I am always seen as the one in the wrong somehow but I am not stupid, I know what she has said, other family members see it too, incredibly upsetting so you are right there as she is so very hurtful |

" The whole thing can of course be a matter of perception - one accident, 5 witnesses who saw the same accident and yet the police get 5 different statements. Nobody has lied, and yet the statements vary. If perception was a universally correct black and white kind of concept... this would not happen. Therefore, while I am clear about what constitutes a lie and what is the truth for me... I can see different opinions could hold there. |

Usually it seems to be someone who is trying to fit in as they cannot establish a unique identity for themselves. Sometimes they are just jealous I suppose but I just take them with a pinch of salt |

I reckon if some of the people on here, (I nearly said guys, but it's not just the men), stopped lying and told the truth to their other halves about what they've been up to, their physical health would definitely not improve!
Not judging, btw, just an observation. |

Depends on what you class as lying. Someone saying something that just isn't true is a lie.
Not saying anything at all could also be classed as a lie.
There was be white lies and ugly rotten lies. Some matter, some don't.
It's all relative. |

What we don't know is the cause and effect here - eg, did the health of the people in the study affect their lying, or was it the other way around?
They felt crap, and were less fastidious about not telling white lies, such as 'I feel fine'.
I do agree that overall being honest is something that's good for us. We also lie to ourselves, and our ability for self-desception is quite large and commonplace. |
