Is it too early to get those buns out, those lovely hot cross buns?

No I have been eating them for weeks. However when I was a kid they would only be sold on Good Friday. My Dad used to make them and waking up to the smell of them for breakfast is a lovely memory of my gorgeous Dad.

I remember that. Have you noticed that you can't buy a plain old current bun these days?

We had hot cross buns last night. Only when we tasted them they were very different. Looked at the packet and they were very berry hot cross buns with blueberries, blackcurrant and some other berry which I had never heard of.

We prefer the traditional buns.

Did they also have the hot cross bun taste?

I've seen all kinds of flavours but it just seems very very wrong.

Just a little bit. We wouldn't recommend them. Why do they always have to try and change things. The traditional ways are often the best.

It's negative marketing, a way of getting you to buy the original

Yes but you can buy tea cakes. Most “buns” are disgusting now - made by the quick method using loads of yeast - makes them pretty awful and like rubber sponges. Can’t wait to get back to France and decent bread and cakes

Love those too - my Dad also made those. You can buy them in bakers sometimes.

Just finished kneading the dough to make some and now watching them rise. Amazing how they double in size!

What a lovely memory. Just reminds me of the same with my mum making ours at home and only ever on Good Friday. How we have all changed now....

Yes we have. My Dad was a better cook than my Mum and used to test recipes until he had them perfected. He made wonderful pastry and apple pies, bread, buns including yeasted iced fingers, fruit cake and trifle.

I hate hot cross buns, I know I'm going to be hated from here on out, but I've said it.

I like them split and toasted inside only with lots of butter.
