Who here has quit?
Did anyone use Champix? I'm. Keen to hear about that in particular.
I've heard of people vomiting at just the smell of it after using that and it's putting me off as I hate being sick. So good stories will help but the good the bad and ugly needed.
How much weight did you gain after quitting and did you feel better for it and notice the effects?

My mother us to smoke 50 a day. Did the whole course of champix and didn't smoke another cig ever again.
But my daughters mother went on chamapix and didn't finish the course so started smoking a couple months after.
So make sure you finish the course of tablets. |

"I quit about 20 years ago ..... maybe a bit more i've lost count now.... nearer 30. I can tell you how. It's no great story and prob not a fantastic fix....."
Go for it.
I stopped for 3 months at one point. My ex chased me his car across town trying to ram my car off the road and I ended up having a panic attack and bought cigarettes to try and calm myself down. After that I lost the will as I felt like something would happen each time. Guess my mindset wasn't strong enough at the time. |

"I quit in 2018 after over 20 years smoking , cant advise you on medical methods as I just stopped altogether and I vape now .
Good luck you can do it xx"
I tried vape but I coughed each time and got annoyed with it. Then realised its quite complicated to get the right vape, strength, flow etc and that seemed like a headache along with a fair amount of money to get it right. |

50 a day... Wow! Good she stopped.
Didn't think about it being a course. I'll have to look at how long it's for etc. Thank you. |

I quite liked that idea myself. Maybe I should try again with a vape and keep reducing the nicotine each time. |

Okay. You said 'Go for it' so I will.
There'll be a bit of background so sos about that but it's relevant. I'll try to keep it short.
Started smoking just before my 16th birthday.
Smoked for approx 30 years and had often tried to stop.
Husband lost his job and debts began to mount.
I sat down and did a lot of financial workings out about how to keep the house, the kids schooling, eat cheaply , no car etc etc etc yada yada like you do.
I said........ No cigs. No cigs pays the mortgage. We both smoked.
There's the motivation. It was about helping my husband and keeping a roof.
Things had to be prioritised. I'd tried before but this time the stakes were higher......
So ...... there's your background.
I'm gonna make a coffee n come back in a mo....... with the 'how' |

The money side... I want to save what I spend. I don't by boxes anymore as they are horrendously priced so I've kept cost down in a way if that makes sense. Which doesn't help. Its the lungs I want to save more. |

Good luck OP it isn’t easy ... but worth it!
I had my last cigarette on 16 Dec 2006 ..having to stand outside Waverley station in Edinburgh, because the ban was in effect in Scotland by then and heading to England in 2007... I didn’t fancy the idea of having to stand outside to smoke when if began in England.
Furthermore my Dad had then been recently told he had terminal lung cancer. I stopped smoking there and then. I didn’t need any stopping smoking help ... watching Dad quickly go down hill in agony, all from smoking was all I needed and determined I wasn’t going to let my kids go through what I had seen ... he died a month later!!
I have never once regretted what I did ... and now am a typical ex smoker ... I hate it, it makes you smell disgusting - at the very least!
The best of luck, I hope you beat it xx

I think first and foremost you have to truly want to quit for it to work no matter what method you use - otherwise there will always be that nagging voice in your head that says "Just one won't hurt"
I'd tried various methods cold turkey, nicotine gum etc with varying degrees of success but without *really* wanting to quit and always ended up back on them.
Almost 5 years ago I switched to vaping and haven't looked back (with a handful of exceptions when d*unk) - yes it's switching one habit for another, but it's worked for me.
Know you said it didn't work for you PW but find yourself a reliable local independent vape shop and ask for advice on the best type for you, explain the issues you've faced with it in the past and anywhere reliable will take time to find the best thing for you without just selling you anything - there's an element of trial and error to find a flavour that works for you for sure but that doesn't have to be hugely expensive and is cheaper than fags for sure.
Good luck with it whatever way you go ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Actually the other thing that helped me, that you may have to wait a while to do because of lockdown is most GP surgeries have a Stop Smoking clinic or nurse where over a period of 12 weeks you visit them weekly and talk about how you've got on plus they prescribe gum, patches etc (whatever they think best for you).
For me just the thought of turning up and telling the nurse I had slipped was enough to keep me off them - the only drawback was after the 12 week period you're deemed "quit" and left to it - I hit a stressful period soon after and first thing I did was reach for the smokes |

The Mrs smoked since she was 15 until 7 years ago when she started vaping.
She then worked her nicotine down until she got to zero, but then increased it again to about 3%.
She makes her own juice.
I cannot speak for the financial aspect, she has a few mods and we tend to buy in bulk, but she is happy with what she is doing.
I would prefer if she quit completely, however its not something she wants to do right now, and so there is no point trying. |

I managed to fully quit over three years ago. Finally.
The difference this last time from all of the previous attempts was that I had realised talking to others, I needed face the psychological most.
I read the Allen Carr book 'Stop Smoking'. I had to park my scepticism and embrace the neural linguistic programming elements to help me retrain my brain.
I didn't stop cold, but switched to 3mg vaping and reduced my intake. After two months I stopped and haven't looked back.
I know everyone is different and this method worked for me, but I encourage anyone to keep trying and try as many options as possible. |

One of the hardest things to do I reckon.
So many pitfalls to make you start again.
I guess you got to be mentally tough to break the habit.
I've been fortunate to be able to stop something that's habit forming immediately and not miss it.
But I had to read a lot of books to get that education and mindset |

Pre Pre how : We went to a therapist. We paid good bucks. He asked Q's and we gave A's and he meditated with us and gave us a tape of us ( we did it individually ) to listen to . A stop smoking tape. ( it as on a cassette , that gives you the time scale ) Anyway ..... I smoked while listening to mine. Waste of money. As were all the other things we'd tried.
Pre how : You smoke because you can.
That's top and bottom of it to me.
How: I realised that if I was stranded on a desert island and couldn't smoke - I wouldn't smoke and fuck all would happen to me. I wouldn't become ill. I'd only become healthier and i'd be too busy trying to build shelter, find food or escape to let my brain think of cigs. So I truly believed that I smoked because I could.
I considered whether smoking to me was habitual or addictive.
I read tons of stuff about smoking. The part that told me how QUICKLY nicotine leaves the body and how QUICKLY the body learns to do without a top up fix was what made it easy for me.
Too many people think they are addicted and can't do anything about it. They believe that the cigarettes make them smoke and that they need it to get through the day. They really don't.
Smoking is just ONE crutch but it's a crutch that KILLS and it takes all your money.
Smoking is an adult's dummy.
Nicotine leaves your body in about 24 hours. Not much more than that..... Once you've done that you ARE A NON SMOKER.
You might try to light up cos that's what you usually do.
You just have to replace that with other things. NOT FOOD. Stopping smoking does NOT make you fat. Eating more food does.
So..... Day 1. I never lit up.
* If I sat down and wanted a fag ( the two went together for me ) i'd immediately do something else.
It might be just tidying the cushions / brushing my hair / untying my trainers..... ANYTHING to remove that initial thought from the brain. Cos they come thick n fast and you THINK you need a cig but you don't. It's HABIT. Not need.
I used this and it really worked. Feel like a fag .. wash the dishes.......... feel like a fag ......brush my teeth...... etc etc.
The times between the brain flashes got longer n longer..... I never think about cigs now.
Also ..... because i'd read that each time you take a cig you are back to square one waiting for the 24 hours for the nicotine to leave the system it seemed so stupid to keep giving in.
Within one day - 3 days my breathing was so improved I could feel my breath going deeper.
Also the information I read about how your lung linings clear quickly let me know how INSANE i'd have to be to recoat them with tar.
Another thing I did was....... if ever I felt like a cig Id do deep breaths through pursed lips as if I was sucking in smoke...... I'd do it while I walked or watched telly or was just sitting. It's amazing how that odd action made me think I WAS smoking or just took away the craving for a cig.
Feeling like I wanted a cig stayed with me for a few weeks ..... but I kept employing the above..... 1. Stop those first brain impulses by doing something else. 2. Suck in now n then as a smoking sub. 3. Realise that you won't die and don't need cigs.
I truly believe that if anyone smokes it's because they have accepted the BULLSHIT that they are a hardened smoker. Don't forget that companies are raking in the cash and need you to give your life to them until you die of smoking related disease then they can get your kids or grandkids.....
Start now by calling yourself a NON SMOKER.
Cold turkey works and costs nothing.
If you do it for ONE DAY you ARE a NON SMOKER
I never think of fags now. I don't stop visitors from smoking in my house tho..... if they are only having one and they are not there a long time.
My regular friend has to smoke outside cos he's here all the time and would stink the place out.
Don't go down the drug route. It's expensive. You don't know if it will harm you and its just ANOTHER MONEY MAKING DUMMY.
You will believe that the drugs did it and not you.
Go cold turkey ...... 48 hours and then don't go back. .....
There are loads of benefits but i've written enough to clog up the internet.
I know you will do this. You want it. It will happen. x

Will power helped me stop. I was early 20s and a friend quit with me at the same time. He didn’t last the week, and as I had gone 4 days, that’s all I needed, the fact I could do it was proof I could kick the habit for good.
I never looked back and wished I was smoking again , and I never met anyone else saying they do either. ![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

I gave up when I found out when I was pregnant, mind over matter cold turkey, I visuallised every time I wanted one of eating a bucket of cold sick and that helped my mindset to do it massively. I didn't give up previously to that purely because I didn't really want to so the drive to do it was not there |

I quit in 2016 after 25 years of smoking.
Like others have said the first 2 weeks is difficult but if you can get through that then you can quit for good.
I've always been chubby so I didn't notice any weight gain.
I used a vape now and again to help me through - it's well worth looking into.
Now I don't need the vape either - but it's there if I have a wobble.
I wouldn't touch cigarettes again

Absolutely it is - but it's a better and cheaper dummy than the little white sticks and has the benefit of keeping me away from them.
Not as good as the "distraction" techniques you mentioned mind |

Definitely better than smoking. I do remember reservations about the safety of vaping tho sometime back but don't know what the final analysis was...
I still don't like people vaping in restaurants etc...... even though I agree that it's not smoking.
I'm not sure what my dummy is ..... I don't drink, don't smoke...... I must have one though. |

It's poison and I wish I hadn't waited until I was 40 to quit.

Last time I spoke about vaping with my GP (a couple of years ago) he said there had been no verified indication that it caused harm in itself - the biggest problem is it's not hugely regulated in terms of the quality of the liquid etc so there are some cheap and cheerful liquids that could be problematic. Either way message from the Doc was to carry on if it kept me off the fans.
Totally with you on vaping indoors though and wouldn't feel right these days to inflict my clouds of vape on a crowded room any more than it would clouds of smoke. |

It's not a good memory but it worked. I still had smokers around me in those days........ Have a fag they'd say.
No thanks I'd say.
Oh go on , they'd say.
No thanks, I'd say .......
and on n non n on ..........
One day I said ........ Okay thanks.
I took it.
I broke it into small pieces in the ashtray.

They stopped offering.

Haven’t read the full thread, but my friend tried champix and stopped because of the side effects. She has gone into vaping as a transition.
Hasn’t it also been linked with suicides?

Try frozen grapes aswell. When you feel like a smoke have a frozen graoe abd suck on it by the time you have ate it your craving will go. You can try mints aswell but the grapes have no calories. I saved the money i would of spent on fags in a jar aswell. It wont help with the cravings but you are seeing each day how much ur saving . I booked a holiday to turkey with the money i saved |

"Haven’t read the full thread, but my friend tried champix and stopped because of the side effects. She has gone into vaping as a transition.
Hasn’t it also been linked with suicides?
"
I do recall there was a concern with this some years ago .. though would suggest the risk of potential suicide is significantly less than the risk of lung cancer and other health conditions associated with smoking!

Jay gave up 2 weeks ago and is doing fantastically so proud of him
He has the nicorette inhaler but this week he's barely picked it up at all
I agree you've got to want to quit for it to work.
I vape and the only reason I haven't given up that is because I enjoy the flavours but I will start to use it less and less this year

Hi OP
I quit 13 years ago, was a 20 a day smoker. I'd heard bad reports about Champix so I used patches. I only need two days worth then that was it. Having smoked for 20+ years I can honestly say its 99% mindset.
I steadily put on lots of weight but I'd rather that than still smoke.
You've really got to want to stop. I wish you well with whatever option you decide. |

I just quit cold turkey, had a couple of false starts as we used to like a bit of at the weekend but 20 years clear now
I took up walking and cycling with a couple of groups, actually became healthier |

It was the only thing that helped me. I called it my chill pill
It was the after smoking smell that made me feel yuk but it just re-enforced the reason why I quit. So anyone that came round and had a fag in the garden had to spray themselves with perfune etc before coming indoors. |

I smoked for about 9+ years and it's been 2 years this year I've quit.
I had to have my appendix out and was in hostipal with a grumbling one for 3-4 days before I got operated on and was put on a drip 24/7 not allowed to eat or drink incase I could go for my op, it was horrible.
This meant i couldn't go out and smoke, as if they knew I'd been out for a cigarette they wouldn't allow me my operation.
I came out of hospital and thought omg I've not had one for 3 days and Mr J said well no point in having one now just carry on and stop, it was so so hard going "cold turkey" but was the best thing I ever did and I don't miss it one bit, which shocks me as I really enjoyed smoking.

I quit a few years ago, used the patches for a week and was ok after that. I did put on a little weight but dealt with that after. I do not feel hugely different, lost the bit of a cough I had
Good luck |

Never thought I had the will power to stop, now I could never go back to it.
Can't even stand the smell now!

I smoked on & off since I was 15. Eight years ago I decided to give up as I didn't enjoy it anymore but knew just trying by myself I'd always gone back after a few months.
I made an appointment with the stop smoking nurse at my gp surgery & she was brilliant.
Asked why I wanted to quit, why, when, etc do I smoke & crave a cigarette. Tried the e-cigarette but they didn't help as I still craved a proper cigarette.
I tried Champix, taking them for a week while still smoking, started to forget to have a cigarette, the desire went. Felt a bit sick after smoking, the smell & taste wasn't great.
After a week I got rid of all the cigarette paraphernalia, ashtrays, lighters, etc.
It still took willpower but I've not had a cigarette since 8th February 2013.
I did put on a little bit of weight as was eating instead of having a fag but was conscious of weight gain so tried to eat sensibly, also went for walk at the times I'd usually have had a cigarette, like after eating dinner or when I felt a bit stressed.
I think the few days of feeling sicky from the tablets were worth the years of being smoke free.
Good luck OP |

Never tried, but I know someone who had great success with Champix, and has exercised a fair bit more and changed diet slightly so not any weight on. He mainly did exercise at times of typical smoking but it’s had a doubly positive effect. |

I have quut now for 4 years this year. I used Champix for about 9 weeks, then used patches for the remainder of the time I was supposed to have the champix for.
To this day, I've not craved a cigarette and I can be around people who smoke and not crave! Win win!
Good luck on your journey |

I just quit from about 10 a day about 8 years ago. My mum quit using champix. One of my old work mates used them too. I never really had cravings. It was just a habit for me. |

I used to smoke about 40 a day for years, quit using champix. Think thay was getting on for 10 years ago?
They do work well, you have to take the full course BUT they will fuck with your head and can and probably will give you suicidal thoughts.
Worked really well for me, not even thought about having another smoke since a stopped. |
