The posts about the sandwich on the other thread got me thinking off on a tangent and i didn’t want to derail the other thread
It seemed like people in general accept that where you have more than enough of something the right thing to do would be to share the excess with others - but that was a very specific example of food , you might not be quite so happy to open your spare room to that stranger
we also often see that people don’t like tax rises and often say that the money we already pay could be better apportioned and managed
it got me thinking , if there was a box HR could tick for you at work that meant you could choose specifically what area your additional tax would be spent on would you be happy to have your income tax increased say up by 5%?
i’m thinking it would be a bit like here is the list , education, defence, general nhs, mental health, top up of benefits, investment in infrastructure etc - your tax is going up but we give you the choice over what budget you contribute to - would people be on board or totally against it
i know we already have an indirect say on how we spend through voting but this would be much more direct
i can also already think of lots of reasons why practically it might not work so not really looking for responses just designed to rip it apart - more wondering what people think of it conceptually if we had utopia where it wasn’t manipulated by just amending the standard budget or avoided by people offshoring etc |
