I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling like this ..
I’ve worked through out and so have many many people to keep this country going but are we getting a pay rise or a bonus...no...it’s our jobs.
Millions are struggling due to job losses, surely they need help too.
Some have worked all their lives and then boooom..job loss and find themselves at food banks, frightened to put the heating on and so on..do we hear about them on the news and in the papers....no..
Rant over... |

They did work in extraordinarily difficult conditions. All gowned up, sweating, unable to access fluid because of the gown/mask/visor/gloves. Trying to keep patient after patient alive while they gasped for breath, long punishing shifts etc. |

"Our NHS staff deserve more than applause and 1% is not enough. @scotgov is offering a 4% pay rise, which would deliver guaranteed minimum increase of £1000 for those earning less than £25,000 & 5.4% increase for staff on lowest pay band...and all backdated to December 2020.
From Nic "
Much deserved I have to say but the synic in me says election looming. |

Probably why Johnson gave the equivalent southern health board 1% as he’s 4 years left |

If you want to know what working in extraordinarily different conditions is like you are welcome to join me for a 16 hour shift in the corn dryer in mid august, |

4% minimum will barely allow them to keep pace with inflation, with lower paid employees struggling the most from it Pay neess to catch up in real terms from stalling over 10+ years.
It's great that Scotland has recognised the need for this level this year |

It's sad that there's that comparison with the corn dryer, as few of us have our hearts and minds anything like trying to keep so many people alive, through their devastation, with the pain of losing so many of them. |

It’s on top of a 9% over 3 years that’s just expired as well |

'I dont get it so why should they' attitude is not a good look. Ive also mostly worked throughout all the lockdowns but I'm a tradesman. If I had to work horrifically long hours, covered head to toe in protective gear whilst risking my life to save others then I sure as shit would want a pay rise too. |

The comparison merely serves to show that lots of people have to put up with pretty horrendous working conditions during the course of doing the job they signed up too.
If caring for dying patients isn’t your thing maybe a front line NHS job isn’t for you. |

To an extent, I agree. On the one hand I'd love to see people such as NHS staff and other key workers (who we've suddenly realised are there and do a valuable job) get a pay rise, so long as it can be done affordably and sustainably. I'd like a pay rise. We all would, I'm sure.
On the other, until a couple of years ago I spent most of my working life as a bus driver, a job I very much enjoyed. Like many other professions they became "key workers" and got clapped for going to work and doing their jobs. Had I still been in the driving seat now, I'd be embarrassed and mortified to be clapped at for doing the job I signed up for. I did it day in, day out. Good days and bad. Because it was my job, because it's what I signed up for. It's what I was there for. To get people from A to B. Not just on the good days. And there were plenty of bad ones. A good number of former colleagues feel the same. |

Anyone that works for NHS, be it cleaners, carers, doctors and nurses deserve alot more recognition and respect for what they do, they're the backbone of Britain and each and every one has sacrificed so much to help others.
They have hearts of gold, they do unimaginable jobs that I could never think of doing I'd break down as I wouldnt be able to stomach what they have been through ...
They recently as of 2021 cured my dad of an aggressive bowel cancer and helped him back into good health, they picked it up quickly and within 4 months were able to cure him and I cant thank them enough....
Anyone that works for NHS and is reading this ... Thank you! |

"Well at least that's in Scotland, backdated to December 20, and of course there was the £500 bonus payment as well.
Not sure about rUK."
Still waiting on my £500 bonus and so too are my colleagues. Plus it is getting taxed so will not be £500. |

Exactly my thoughts. I had a forced pay cut instead, the same day the rent and council tax went up! |

Wonderful to hear. Anyone getting a payrise and just having a job in these times can be super grateful. Thank you to everyone who keeps our country running everyday and looking after those people needing help xxx |

"Sturgeon always makes Johnson look a plonker - although hardly a difficult task
"
You also have to consider the largest employer in Scotland is the nhs. There is an election in 2 months snd SNP need votes. |

It isn't really a payrise though. NHS staff have had their pay frozen for years with no cost of living increases (when pay is adjusted in line with inflation to keep you effectively earning the same) so as much as I support the 4% increase in Scotland, this still doesn't even catch them up in this regard. |

I feel maybe we should wait and backdate if needs be. We still don't fully know the financial implications of the pandemic. People have lost their jobs, struggling to pay for food, may loose their homes etc. I'd rather wait assess and see everyone that needs it is cared for.
This does appear as a popularity thing, with the upcoming elections soon. |

The whole bonus thing is a joke in my opinion, a bonus scheme for working at the NHS. The occupation comes with risk and care of duty! just look at the retired staff who returned to work during this pandemic! True hero’s.
People these days just want hand outs and use the NHS name to push their own agendas.
I work for the NHS, but I am not frontline. Therefore I don’t deserve applauding, I don’t deserve bonuses, I don’t deserve all these discounts.
This should not be about NHS staff but the frontline workers only. Otherwise how can you justify this argument for NHS staff, working from the safety of their homes while teachers, shop workers, public transport staff etc etc get zero special treatment or recognition for doing their jobs which are way more risky but don’t hold the NHS tag. |

Nope. Totally agree.
The NHS workers have been amazing! And of course they deserve praise and a pay rise aswell as a fuck tonne of respect and a appreciation.
So does everyone else that's been considered a front line/key worker. From cleaners to cashiers and all that's inbetween.
It's taken more than the NHS to get us through.

This is also spot on
NHS workers should be paid a lot more. That was the case before the rona tho. |

So the average wage in the United Kingdom is c£28,000 with some regional variations. The average nurse gets paid £33,000. These figures were reported in The Times and are verifiable. The public sector pension is also still favourable to those in the private sector. On the face of it this isn’t a bad deal.
Lots of people worked hard in different ways during the pandemic, whether its care home staff, police, prison officers, bus drivers, farmers, working with homeless people etc. Even your man in his corn dryer with a sweat on is helping keep someone fed and healthy ultimately. Some of these industries never get recognition. If you think about Christmas there is often thanks for firemen, nurses and police officers- no one thinks of the prison officers who provide a 24/7 service 365 days a year and see some pretty disturbing things.
This is a difficult issue with the NHS as what price do you place on making someone better, saving someone’s life or making somebody who is dying comfortable and dignified. For me you can’t put a money value on this and do nothing will ever seem right. That being said I’ve always thought that working in medicine was a vocation that went beyond money to something else. I’d support a 4% pay rise as I think it’s been exceptional this last year, and so long as wages keep up with inflation that’s probably fair.
Overall we just need to be better at recognising the contributions people make.
Ultimately everyone should pay tax (except very low incomes) because we all take out of the system at some point in some way and it’s part of our social contract. |
