The Ozzie actress Rebel Wilson was cycling when taken out by a dog off a lead...
Freddie the seal pub was mauled by a dog off the lead on the banks of the Thames..
Later put down by vets..
Dog Leads...
Is it time to use them?

Yes, I walk in a park in my lunch break. I don't mind dogs off leads but I do object to dogs that don't have basic recall. If they don't come when called they shouldn't be off their lead. It's not the dogs fault it's irresponsible/lazy owners not training their dogs.
It's not fair having dogs run up at small kids, or people who have a fear of dogs or dogs that that are anxious. |

They should be used in some places and dogs should also be allowed off lead in other places to run and play and have fun. More importantly there should be more regulated training, the number of people I see being dragged along by their dogs when out walking is crazy. As long as you have good confident recall then in nice open areas it is fine to let a dog run free. Off lead does not have to mean out of control. Frankly stopping off lead activity would be unfair to most dogs. |

I saw three poodles armed with shotguns rob a betting shop in Cleethorpes - they got away with several thousand pounds.
I suspect they could be connected to the OCG. |

Poor seal. Hope the owner is found and prosecuted.
I have often come close to a cropper riding down the street having a loose dog snap at my horses heels. Of course it will be my fault if my boy kicks out and hurts the dog. |

Its always been a legal requirement to control your dog in public.
Many council green spaces demand that you must keep your dog on a lead.
Its all down to how responsible you are. The irrisponsible owners are still going to ignore the rules, arent they. |

They're supposed to be used in certain areas just some choose to ignore the rules (shock horror)
Too many dog owners think everyone should love their dog because they're so cute. No. I like dogs but learn how to control yours. If your recall is shit then don't let it off the lead. |

"Unfortunately the lockdown has lead to a number of new dog owners who have not been able to attend organised training classes or other socialisation. "
Then don't get a dog or watch videos on how to do it. |

As an aside from the thread...
Dog owners are now being advised to keep their dogs on metal chain leads
There has been huge increase in dog thefts and many 'dognappers' are simply cutting through fabric leads
Also, dog owners are being advised to walk their dogs with least used hand, leaving their dominant hand to fight off any potential thieves |

That poor seal I think it’s our job as responsible dog owners to make sure our dog is under control.
We always use our dog lead in public places there is a place we take him where it’s safe to leave him off lead and besides the odd rabbit he chases ( no chance of him catching as he’s way to fat) completely safe for him to have fun safely.
There was a story I read yesterday where a husky was shot and killed in wales as the owner somehow thought it would be a good idea to leave him run loose in a field where there were sheep and lambs and the dog sadly killed 3 lambs before it was shot dead by a farmer.
We deliberately avoid places like this as we know our dog and know even tho he wouldn’t attack he would definitely chase which can still be distressing for farm animals. |

My friend was out running on an outdoor track at the weekend. A bloody big Alsatian bounded up to him . He shouted to the owner..... This is a running track ! the field is massive! You don't need to walk the dog on the running track...
She shook her head at my friend as if he was out of order......

There were two labs eyeing me up when I was running today ...... I stopped n said ulloooooooooooooo doggies ...... and gave them a ruffling ....
The owner who had been warning them to keep back did this to me .
Mea Culpa ....... put me on a lead ! |

Both of my kids had dogs jumpmup and knock them over in the park when they were little. Both times the owner said 'oh he / she is just being friendly'.
Thats the equivalent of a horse rearing up at an adult - how friendly would they find that?

Dogs should always be on a lead, even with good recall as otherwise lazy dog owners will complain and think they should be entitled to have their dogs off the lead too.
My little girl was pinned down by a very excitable dog a few weeks ago. The dog came out of nowhere and jumped on her, pinned her down into a muddy puddle and I'm so thankful it didn't bite her, but she now panics around dogs.
I have had so many awful encounters with dogs off leads and I'm fed up. My previous dog was attacked four times and it made him incredibly nervous, something that could have easily been prevented if dog owners kept their dogs close by.
I think it would be a good idea to have secure off lead fields if you really need to let your dog off the lead. |

Never liked that myself, however i would ride out with my old dog off lead but could put her on even from horseback if needed.
She was a good one for running up to kids though, cos she wanted to play, other dogs she wasn't a fan off, but didnt attack, she'd just keep her distance from them and came to me if one annoyed her.
Totally dogs/owner fault as it is with sheep too.
Never tried her with cycling, imagine much same as horse tbh.
Training is so important & its not just the puppy stage either, theres the young teen & adult stage where they rechallege Who's boss (they live in packs remember, alpha has to be you). Its like constantly having a pre schooler lol

Yep, i was well warned by my friend that owned the farm that she was fine to be there but if my dog worried (chased) his sheep, he'd not think twice bout shooting her (or his own for that matter). |

My small dog has good recall but I only let her off lead in a few of the places we walk where she can be safe.
Those where she is off lead we walk in the same routine every time, we both walk together and I watch out for her and she follows me or runs off for a short way and then comes back to me.
I also have a dog lead - it came with my collar |

"Easy solution. Muzzle any dog off a lead and bring in self defence law against dogs. If a dog bounds up without a muzzle then that dog is fair game to take down...."
Nope...... my dog wouldn’t tolerate a muzzle not would I subject her to it. If a cyclist comes barrelling up to me and my dog and she protects me then such is life... cyclists are a hazard in parks going too fast along footpaths |

So it's all about the cyclists not the dog walkers ?
If they are on a lead then they are no threat to cyclists |
