With less than an hour to go before the £1000 fine, I’ve got the Census form filled in online

Might not seem like much to many people here, but feeling proud of myself for selecting bisexual as my sexuality...I think that’s the first time I’ve written it down anywhere outside the crazy world of Fab!!

If you don’t fill it in, you get a £1000 fine - although they do chase you up first rather than just sending you a bill in the post tomorrow

Nothing done the last time for me.

I refused to fill it out so they sent someone out to ask why they got told the same thing.

No fine and I still wont fill the next one out.

You have several days after the date to fill it in. It says to fill it in on the 21st or close after.

I don’t understand why so many have an objection to the census when this has been around for years.

People quick to sign up to Amazon,Google ,Apple,Samsung,Netflix.tiktok etc etc amazingly these hold more info about yourselves than a census. Your being logged at every search you do but won’t fill a government form that won’t be open to the public for 100 years.

Yes there are many reasons. But sometimes just doing what you're asked is enough of a reason in a community. Without the need to fight it, argue about it, need evidence that it is justified....any of the other what aboutery or what's in it for me... Sometimes its nice to know we are all part of the community that cares enough about eachother to do what is asked of them.

Yep the internet knows all about us already

I have no problem with the census- but I understand why people are irked by it - it's invasive.

It's the threat of the fine that gets people's backs up.

It should be voluntary.

Its not without question though because the reason why we have census is reasonably and necessary.

It never ceases to amaze me how hard some people find it to do what is asked of them....and yet share God knows what on a public sex site.

Why would you fill it out? Other than the £1000 fine?

It forms part of our social history. It helps with developing local policies, funding for different parts of society etc.

Doing something without questioning it is ignorance. I'm pretty sure the welfare state was introduced to combat ignorance (one of the big 5).

Rude. No need for it

I'm rude because I asked a question?

Nice!

I was the way you asked it.

"Why would you fill it out? Other than the £1000 fine?"

If that's a rude way to ask questions, we should probably stop asking questions all together

You need to read what you wrote again because you made it very clear you thought it was ignorant to fill something out without question so not quite worded as you have just tried to suggest."

Ahh yes, it's not like what he said didn't have any subliminal meanings...just assuming I'm an arsehole who doesn't care about community.

It never ceases to amaze me how ironical some of the self justice statements people make on this forum.

"I've never filled out a census.

Pretty sure I've not been on one since I left home at 17.

Never had a fine either.

Lu

What's your reason for not doing it?

I have several.

Mostly, simply not wanting to.

Plus I see little point now, I've been spending half the year in Turkey for the past few years and plan to get my residency this year so I'll not live here much longer anyhoo

Will you do the one in Turkey? "

Dunno, probably not unless I have to.

The government will have all the relevant info they need in order for me to get my residency.

Its not without question though because the reason why we have census is reasonably and necessary.

Census's are not a new thing and almost every country in the world has a Census in one form or another.

I'm not saying it doesn't have a purpose, I'm saying its purpose isn't legitimate enough to impose fines on people for not completing it.

So you only follow the laws for which you believe there is a legitimate purpose? "

Well.. The fact you've not been caught isn't quite the same as being obliged to complete it.

The fact you don't get caught for (used for example only) speeding at 50mph in a built up area driving past a school doesn't mean you have to stick to the 30mph speed limit.

Neither. I simply don't want to fill it out. I don't see the point. The government have the info they need about me as far as I'm concerned.

Bit judgemental isn't it? For you decide I'm a lazy or ignorant person because I haven't filled out a form...

Should I assume you're an ignorant sheep for doing it?

"If I HAVE to do it, I will.

I've never bothered in my time living here as an adult...and that choice hasn't come back to bite me on the arse yet

But you have to do it here so whats the difference?

We'll clearly I don't have to as I never have and nothing's happened to me

Well.. The fact you've not been caught isn't quite the same as being obliged to complete it.

The fact you don't get caught for (used for example only) speeding at 50mph in a built up area driving past a school doesn't mean you have to stick to the 30mph speed limit.

My not filling out a form doesn't put anyone's life in danger.

In fact, the only person at risk in anyway by my not filling out that form, is me.

Don't put me in the same category as assholes who speed and put people's lives at risk all the time.

It's not the same at all! "

Its just a debate and they are the same in as much as they are laws which we are obliged to follow. Of course the consequences of breaking one being an arsehole because it has potentially tragic consequences and the other being a source of pride worthy of sharing with a forum because it has less immediate consequences are very different.

"Nothing done the last time for me.

I refused to fill it out so they sent someone out to ask why they got told the same thing.

No fine and I still wont fill the next one out.

Why?

It never ceases to amaze me how hard some people find it to do what is asked of them....and yet share God knows what on a public sex site.

Why would you fill it out? Other than the £1000 fine?

It forms part of our social history. It helps with developing local policies, funding for different parts of society etc.

Doing something without questioning it is ignorance. I'm pretty sure the welfare state was introduced to combat ignorance (one of the big 5).

Rude. No need for it

I'm rude because I asked a question?

Nice!

If that's a rude way to ask questions, we should probably stop asking questions all together

You need to read what you wrote again because you made it very clear you thought it was ignorant to fill something out without question so not quite worded as you have just tried to suggest.

Ahh yes, it's not like what he said didn't have any subliminal meanings...just assuming I'm an arsehole who doesn't care about community.

It never ceases to amaze me how ironical some of the self justice statements people make on this forum.

I think you have taken this too personally and read more into what was written.

And here it happens again. Something doesn't sit right with your opinion so you try and make my opinion to be a thing of misunderstanding.

Filled in 3.

One on behalf of a disabled friend...took 5 mins.

One for a lady friends 86 yrs old mother...took 5 mins.

My own took 30 mins as I had to include my female house mate and fellow fabber...currently away. Also another lady friend and her daughter who are officially registered at my address while living in a park home. Had to include 2 other addresses of lady friends for me where I stay more than 30 nights a year.

Hope I got it right....don't fancy a £1000 fine!!

Yeah. Society is a mess because of people like me.

People who go out of their way to make others feel good.

People who go above and beyond to make others feel accepted and loved.

People who do charity work.

People who raise awareness and fight for causes that don't only effect them but others too.

People who are kind.

People who are actively trying to better the world in their own way

People who don't fill out a form.

Yeah...it's people like me!

Please don't presume to know me from a single piece of information.

Personally, I think it's a prefer sad view of our society that someone would decide I'm a shitty person and part of the problem with society because I don't fill out a form, which would give them no more information about me than they already have btw.

Thankfully I'm pretty secure in who I am aswell as the fact I'm a fucking good person who does more than most to better our society. Someone less secure might've been pretty hurt by that comment.

"I find it really odd that people can argue the ‘I don’t have to’ when it’s actually a legal requirement. Since when do people pick and choose what law to abide by?!?

Must be some sort of correlation with this Tory government and Brexit, I think.

But this is nothing to do with either! People need to think of the bigger picture.

I'm a social liberal on the political spectrum. If I was rich I would give away the money because I do believe helping others is more beneficial than hogging it. I don't think the government has the right to fine me for not completing a census though.

I think not filling something out that you believe in purely because there’s a fine for not doing so I’d crazy.. I’m not a fan of the fine but it doesn’t come into it because I’m taking 10 minutes of my life to follow the rules

I'm also a liberal and think the government shouldn't interfere in people's freedom unless utmost necessary.

When you have to threaten people to do something that isn't necessary you're on a slippery slope.

P.S. I did fill it out, even though I'm discriminated from applying for some professions because of my heritage."

The census is necessary though.. it’s used to work out demographics for funding and shows how society has changed in 100 years. It doesn’t affect any freedom.. it’s a positive document that remains sealed to the public for 100 years.

"Oh dear

The only reason most of us fill it out is because we are threatened with a fine.

It really doesn't go deeper than that.

If there was no threat - I wouldn't fill it out.

Exactly this!

Really don't understand why some of you are SO offended by people not bothering.

The census is a long standing law that benefits the community. ‘Not bothering’ isn’t really a response. How do we teach the next generation to respect the law when adults aren’t bothered?

I won't teach the next generation to respect things I don't.

I don't respect the census, clearly...

I also don't have any kids, so don't worry

And this is why society is such a mess. You don’t get to choose which laws to respect. Very selfish.

So perhaps they would use the demographics info of ethical backgrounds and stop discriminating against us.

But that hasn't happened in the 12 years I've lived here.

Totally agree. But as we know, politics and laws are outdated. Which is why stuff like this has the potential to help make that change.

Oh I am...I'm simply disagreeing.

I'm gonna duck out of this conversation now.

It's a shame people always seem to have to make personal attacks on others in order to make their argument heard.

If you all decide I'm a cunt because I don't complete the census, I'm alright with that. I try not to let the opinions of strangers bother me.

I won't continue reading and engaging with people who have decided I'm selfish or "the problem with society" based on one thing they disagree with. Or trying to make me feel guilty for not doing it.

I have enough important shit yo worry about atm

I agree with all of that. Laws only work when people choose to obey them. When you have to rely on getting caught to follow them... You need a lot of police or civil enforcement.

And since they're outdated we break the law probably once a week at least whether we know it or not.

Does that all make us criminals?

If not how do we decide which laws are ok to break and others not?

All I'm saying is stop threatening people to fill out a questionnaire unless you're planning to address it during your term of parliament.

Dramatic. Didn’t say any of the above. I simply said it was a selfish attitude to decide what laws to respect.

I read what you said.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I'm entitled to think it's bullshit.

It’s called debate.

Respectfully, it ceases to be debate when name calling starts.

In my opinion.

No names were called? I simply said it’s very selfish to only follow laws that suit you?

So you called me selfish...

You also said I was the part of the problem with society.

Or at least that's how it read.

"

Please read it properly. I said it’s selfish to only follow laws that suit you. That’s not how the law and society work.

Once upon a time, in the pre internet era, someone knocked at your door and asked you the census questions. There was no avoiding that. Census data is really important in getting an overall view of the population now and predictions of the population in 5, 10 years etc and this is used to plan education, health and other key provision and budgets. Yes, people are registered with the NHS but actually that data is not available to the planners. It's available on a need-to-know basis by healthcare workers who care for you. The Dept for Health does not go trawling your NHS records. Things like screening campaigns will rely on census data to know how many people will require screening at different points in time.

If someone doesn't have kids and therefore isn't going to require a school place, someone actually needs to know! They don't get the data in the form of "Mrs Jones of Market Street, Melton Mowbray has no kids," it's in the form of "in 2021, the Market Street area of Melton Mowbray has XXX children of pre school age, therefore in 1, 2, 3, 4 etc years we will need capacity for XXX children in reception, secondary school etc."

Also, from a purely interesting perspective, census data from the UK and further afield has enabled me to trace my ancestry, which isn't exactly what family legends said it was. I've discovered relatives I didn't know I had and learned tons about things I'd never probably have investigated if they weren't connected to my family.

The UK has run 10-yearly censuses since 1801 (excepting 1941) and so it's not exactly something new, it's bugger all to do with the Government of the day (Conservative, Labour etc, it doesn't matter) and so I am genuinely confused as to why so many people are suddenly opposed to it.

All that said, people can indeed whatever they want, £1000 fine or otherwise (which, by the way, is part of the 1921 Census Act, so again, not exactly new news).

Yeah. Society is a mess because of people like me.

People who go out of their way to make others feel good.

People who go above and beyond to make others feel accepted and loved.

People who do charity work.

People who raise awareness and fight for causes that don't only effect them but others too.

I've been very surprised the way this thread has meandered around. I know every one has their own stuff... But it's not a surprise we struggle as a nation with some complicated things when some are so exercised by a very simple 10 minute form filling that will help many future plans and services and policies and educational studies and that we and most other nations have been performing for centuries. I'm not sure it could have been made much easier for people.

My (polite) observations are as follows ...

I think none of us are truly qualified to comment authoritatively unless we have experience running a country. Anyone on here in that position? No? I didn't think so. I'd hazard a guess that information is needed in order to be able to plan. If it's made optional then uptake will be poor and then we'll all be bitching years down the line when there's been poor planning of the various vital services we rely upon. So, how do you compel people to complete a questionnaire given apathy is the enemy? Well, telling your mum when you don't complete your census probably isn't going to cut it. Hitting people in the wallet/purse usually focusses their minds though.

Just saying ...

I imagine the "unnecessary" questions are the optional ones which you can choose not to answer. The basic, compulsory questions are about who you are and where you live and that's it.

Because they want to know if there is correlation between level of education and health issues and suchlike. Also knowing that a certain area seems to have people with fewer/no qualifications might target it for more financial support for lifelong education etc.

Also the health ones were very general, did not ask about specific conditions, just "do you consider yourself to have a long term health condition" etc. I couldn't decide if my disability meant I had poor or fair health. I think I picked fair...

As a generalisation though I believe people picking and choosing what law to follow is dangerous, especially when it’s something so minor that infringes nothing and actually serves to benefit community. I’m trying to think of something current that’s contentious.

*Snipped to avoid scroll angst*

The whole post is the perfect summation of why it's important to complete the census.

I personally don't understand the nay sayers stance - the census provides valuable information to various central and local government departments to help in planning local services which we *all* use - withholding that information is at best not very community minded in my opinion.

The best option is to ignore. They have no proof of postage. It was not addressed to you either. They cannot fine you has you have not broken the law. They say "By Law" you have to complete or you could get a £1000 fine. Again it's all scare mongering. Their "law" is contract law and it does not apply to we "the people" it only applies when you concent and contract with them. We stand under common law which is no "harm loss or damage" Any further correspondence in relation to the census e.g. (fines) needs rebutting using the 4 questions........1.please provide the ferified claim to which I (first name) have caused loss, harm or damage to my fellow man/women. 2.. please provide the obligation (contract) with a wet signature from i (first name) to prove I am in contract with your service corporation. 3...please provide details of who in your service corporation claims i property. 4.... please provide details of who in your service corporation can administrate property without right. THE GORVENMENT ARE A SERVICE CORPORATION AND CAN ONLY CONTRACT WITH YOU. THEY CANNOT ENFORCE CONTRACT LAW UNLESS YOU CONCENT.

It's a load of old common law/freemen of the land/Magna Carta/conspiracy theory BS. My mother lost her house through repossession because she spouted this shite in court... Absolute codswallop, the lot of it!

"I only answered basic stuff. Left out the rest, none of their business

I don't understand this attitude to be honest as all the questions were basic stuff. "

It’s mad isn’t it as this is the info they use to plan schools, disability services, retirement accommodation, housing ....... not filling it in is so self defeating

Hardly basic stuff, asking about how much u earn, employment history, any medical conditions etc! My medical records are between me and a doc not some stranger in government. Every question on it gave multiple other options that would make you contradict yourself and would question the validity of the original answer! Very very intrusive form tbh

Every single business an organisation does a stock take so it makes sense that governments do the same. "

They asked "do you have a health condition that lasts more than 12 months?" and "rate your health - good, fair, poor etc"

It was incredibly superficial. I spent a long time debating if my health was fair or poor and plumped for fair.

There's zero questions about specific medical conditions and knowing about general health and general education background can provide useful information for planning local health, education, social security and other budgets.

"Once upon a time, in the pre internet era, someone knocked at your door and asked you the census questions.

All that said, people can indeed whatever they want, £1000 fine or otherwise (which, by the way, is part of the 1921 Census Act, so again, not exactly new news)."

At last a clear post outlining why we have a census..

It forms part of our social history. It helps with developing local policies, funding for different parts of society etc.

Doing something without questioning it is ignorance. I'm pretty sure the welfare state was introduced to combat ignorance (one of the big 5).

Rude. No need for it

I'm rude because I asked a question?

Nice!

I was the way you asked it.

"My (polite) observations are as follows ...

Just saying ..."

Not sure what form you filled in but mine didn't ask about earnings or *specific* medical history or employment history just employment status at a very high level (i.e. am I employed, self-employed etc)

Hardly "intrusive" and all valid information to allow decisions to be made about both central and local government plans for communities.

I still have yet to see a valid reason not to complete it - provides information to allow communities to develop and infrastructure to be put in place, provides in the future a very good social history picture and more besides.

There is nothing in the questions that is specific enough to give me cause for concern about my privacy.

Makes me laugh though that "privacy" seems to be the prime reason given by the nay sayers and yet they'll happily sign up to Google, Facebook, Twitter and more all of which have access to very specific personal information that goes way beyond that asked in the census, which is an established record that has been taken for 200 years

Yes. Don't you?

I think most people follow all laws of the land. "

really? The naivety is strong in this one!
