Kitchen drawers

Any kitchen designers/fitters or really knowledgeable kitchen folk about?

I have a space in my kitchen, it’s a cupboard carcass no door, no shelf etc just an empty void which has become a dumping ground since I moved in

I’d like to put some drawers in there, I just need the drawer boxes and runners, however this is proving harder than I imagined.

I have been to Homebase B&Q, looked on many websites Amazon eBay even asked on Facebook for advice/help etc all to no avail

The sizes of the cupboard are:

500mm wide

480mm deep

710mm tall

I did see in B&Q a soft close deep drawer box in the good home range for £30 alas only comes in 600mm, I spoke to a B&Q kitchen lady in depth about the drawers they stock, she couldn’t suggest any that would fit.

An internal drawer would be perfect, doesn’t have to have a cupboard door, happy to have “open drawers” so to speak

A friend did suggest buying say 600mm and cutting the drawer box down, alas this is way beyond my skill set and patience!

Any suggestions greatly received,

Do you know of any neighbours that are into DIY? May be worth asking them around? Say you'll buy the wood and offer them some money for their time and carpentry skills.

Wouldn't think it would take them that long tbh.

(So resisting the urge to say that I would like to rummage around in your drawers.)

IKEA are very good for sourcing individual kitchen parts like those.

I’m not saying they’ll definitely have what you’re looking for but there’s a strong chance.

The size of the cupboard is old size now - IKEA only do 40/60/80 cupboard widths.

You will find difficult to source if not made to order and that could be expensive.

If you can’t find anything how about buying some cupboard shelves and cutting depth down. You buy little hooks that push into holes that may already be in the cupboard to support them.

Then buy some baskets to put inside - you can buy in many sizes and colours.

Shame you are down south . I’m a chippy by trade .

Sounds like you will need to buy runners from , ironmongary direct , screwfix , anywhere like that . If you are a dab hand with a cordless and saw I suggest making drawers out of ply or mdf.

You can then buy the drawer fronts from wherever sells your style of kitchen then face the new drawers .

yes but theres 2 ways to do it

or buy the drawer runners and buy a square of wood for the middle and rear back plate

https://www.screwfix.com/p/drawer-system-450mm-2-pack/16338

I get loads of them from fitting kitchens

Probably cheaper to buy a new cheap 500 carcass with everything included. Draws & runners plus fronts. Buying them bit buy bit might get bummed on price. I’m guessing you want draw fronts to match existing kitchen? So depends on style and finding a match or if they’re still in production. Manufactures upgrade there lines and discontinue constantly.

actually its not out of your skill set

unscrew the top from the unit and unscrew fromt he wall

sometimes you need to support the worktop so move it to the side

the new ones are plastic screw up feet

push to the back of the wall

so its lay on floor screw the 4 legs up until the unit is level with the worktop

then put 2 1" or 1 1/4" screws in through the units base top wood and thats it.

jobs done for a lady and easy enough

Cheap fix would be new door and shelf.

If your worried about skill level. I’d say swapping a unit would be a lot easier than setting out draw runners etc... for a novice but hey ho.

Good luck

Ideally drawers as it’s right by the door and not w lot of room for a door to open

Oh gosh I bet that’s hard then with just two! I can see why you want more... I seriously think the easiest way would be like someone else said buy a new carcass. Unless you want to build the drawers yourself and put the runners in ... I think it would be easier just to buy the unit take the old out and replace it

Snigger its just as bad when your working in a private house if not worse.

Private houses tend to be really picky and want a pro job for peanuts

best way to find out how old your units are take off the bottem plinth under the unit.

it wont be that old where they used to have the bases to the floor

what you will find is plastic legs underneath the base of the unit.

they should be 2 screws at back of the unit and screws at the front going up into the worktop

Just to make it really clear here I would let you do it whilst I helped you.

But the thought of you stood over me whilst in a skirt is such a temptation whilst im laid on the floor screwing the legs up

It’s one draw. £43 each! Plus the descriptions vague. Don’t know if runners come with it. It’s the first thing I saw when I looked earlier. If you you want to fill the space and buy 4 (don’t know if there’s a deep draw option for 3) your looking at nearly £200 without the cost of fronts.

Cheapest 3 draw carcass I saw when having a little look earlier on was £90 with everything in.

As explained earlier

I had a similar issue and ended up having to get the next size down and pack the sides out with timber, didn’t matter as the drawer front covers it when closed but still wasn’t ideal and ended up costing around £50 for one.

As others have said you are probably better off getting a whole new carcass with drawers.

Drawers are a bugger to fit at the best of times, might be a lot more simpler and cheaper just to install some shelves as bases and get some wooden boxes that can be painted or even baskets and plonk them on the bases if you’re not worried about them being hidden behind a door.

Good luck!

On EBay they have a variety of metal pull out drawers to fit in units complete with the runners - you could buy these and then put an ordinary cupboard door on the front so all hidden away.

Nothing involving putting drawers in the unit will be a cheap fix though.

Buy a complete cupboard with drawers that you like that is smaller than the space.

Use the vertical gap left down the side for longer items.

Ask a local carpenter or kitchen fitter to come round and look at it for you. Task them to come up with a solutions and quotes... They won't charge for this and then you'll have options and ideas...... If you don't like the quotes, you don't have to go with them and you might be able to implement one of their solutions yourself.....

It's a bit cheeky, but it happens to us all the time and we get over it lol

drawerboxes.co.uk,

follow the measuring guide on the website. £31.60 ea for the boxes and runners. Come with fitting instructions. Homebase or B&Q can cut the fronts to size on order, and you'll just need to paint and fit them.

PM me for further details if you have questions or need more help.

A good carpenter will cost more, but you'll have a better product in the end.....

"drawerboxes.co.uk,

follow the measuring guide on the website. £31.60 ea for the boxes and runners. Come with fitting instructions. Homebase or B&Q can cut the fronts to size on order, and you'll just need to paint and fit them.

PM me for further details if you have questions or need more help.

A good carpenter will cost more, but you'll have a better product in the end.....

at the cost of 3 drawers or 4 id rather buy a new unit instead"

Agreed, it would be best and cheapest!... but she's explained she doesn't want to do that herself.... you can also get used kitchen units really cheap.... but she'd still need to paint it or have it painted and pay a fitter or handyman to install it.....
