So the census is here.
New this year, in at question 26 is: which of the following best describes your sexual orientation?
If you're Bi did you tick Bisexual?
Or even fill in Other sexual Orientation if you trans etc?

The question which surprised me was the "do you identify as the same sex you were born" at the bottom of the list of usual suspects was a place you could type what you identify as that wasnt listed...I wonder how many random objects or animals are going to be put in that box??? I nearly identified as a fridge but thought I had best take it seriously so I'm now a lady. |

Trans isn’t a sexual orientation.
Yes, I ticked bisexual. |

There are a lot of different non-binary identities, it would have been for those. |

"Is trans a sexual orienation?
I haven't ticked anything as I technically sit under my dad's council tax so I'm included in his.
I would tick bi though "
There's an "if you need to answer separately to your household" option if you wanted to. Apparently it overides the parts about you if someone else answers on your behalf in the household one. It's great for people who aren't out to family and I'm glad they've done it. |

Questions 26, 27(sexual orientation) and 16 (religion) are optional - you don't have to fill them in if you don't want to. It is a criminal offence not to complete the other questions with a maximum fine of £1000 and a criminal record. |

I'm not sure I want to ask what my dad put as my sexual preference

You wouldn't need to know what he put .
It's totally cool if you're happy to leave it as is, I just thought it was good for others to know its an option . |

"Nice to see people are choosing Bi as an option"
Why though? I’m out, it’s who I am, it’s a hugely important part of my identity, not just something I do for fun. If I can tell my mum, and come out on Facebook by posting photos of myself marching in the Pride parade dressed head to toe in the bi pride colours, I’m not going to balk at telling the ONS. Some people won’t feel able to if they’re not out and someone else is completing the survey for them; and some people (as evidenced by the near-daily posts on here) don’t know what they are or understand what bi means, but if you’re out why wouldn’t you choose that option? |

i’d like to ask a question and hopefully it doesn’t cone across offensively because its information i genuinely don’t know
i’ve seen mentions on non binary or more than 2 genders on a few threads , but then other times you see that people who are trans should be accepted as their gender of choice (sorry maybe bad word for it) , like for example a trans woman is just a woman there is no real need for the trans element of that statement
so how do those things interact with each other ? what are the additional genders? my original thought had been cis male, trans male, cis female, trans female, but then that would contradict one set of thought if that makes sense |

You're totally right in thinking that a trans woman who identifies as a woman should be considered a woman. Non-binary is more people who for example identify as gender fluid (their gender identity fluctuates) or people who don't identify with either male or female . |

Unfortunately the trans exclusionary feminists have, I hear, won a court case to change the guidance for trans people filling out the census.
The guidance asked for your gender and suggested you could put down what was on your driving licence. You don’t need a gender recognition certificate to change your gender on your driving license and the trans exclusionary group argued that allowed people to ‘self identify’.
So now you are only supposed to put what’s on your birth certificate.

I filled ours in mid-week and seem to remember the questions around gender allowing individuals to choose how they identify now and whether this is the same as their gender at birth.
As for sexuality, I chose bisexual because that's what I am.
I don't hide my sexuality, though I don't feel ths need to announce it in general... |

Trans men and trans women aren’t additional genders - as you say, they’re men and women. Non-binary covers anyone who doesn’t identify as either a man or a woman. So that would include agender, genderfluid, genderqueer, two-spirit, and I know there are other terms but I can’t remember them at the moment. Some people will just identify as non-binary without using any of the other terms. I can’t claim to be an expert on this, but I do my best to keep learning and understanding. |

I’m trans myself and I don’t claim to be an expert either!
The guidance notes were issued and it’s since they were that the terfs have taken their case to court.
I put ‘female’ on my form because that’s what my birth certificate now says. |

No, trans is not a sexual orientation. Trans is a gender thing.
A very simple explanation i was once given: "Gender is who you are. Sexual orientation is who you do." |

So now you are only supposed to put what’s on your birth certificate.
"
I believe that it now says "if not sure, consult guidance" and the guidance says "look at your birth certificate or gender recognition certificate". So....
1. Every trans person i know is more certain in their understanding of gender than any cis person i know, so they're not going to need to consult guidance.
2. If i did consult the guidance it wouldn't do me the slightest bit of good, because I don't have a gender recognition certificate to look at, and I don't have the foggiest where my birth certificate is, probably got put in a drawer somewhere at least forty years ago. And the court case explicitly says that I'm not allowed to use my passport or driving licence to find out what my gender is.
So I guess in the absence of birth certificate, I'll just have to fall back on whatever gender I identify myself as - exactly the same as every cisgender person will do! |

No. Trans is most definitely not a sexual orientation.
If you’re not out to the person filling out the census as trans or as something other than straight, you can request a code from the census team privately and correct your gender or orientation. The person who filled out the census on your behalf won’t be able to see you’ve done this. |

I never received one. Been trying to contact them to say that fact. But all I get is recorded messages asking me to quote the number I received in my letter (which I didn't receive). Get the same online, they keep asking me to quote the number on the letter I received (which I did..........) you know the rest. Is it a LEGAL requirement, to fill in said form, if and when I ever receive one? |

Yet we readily give our information to social media platforms, internet providers, shops etc. especially if we can get a free pen or discount code.
Given the information is mean to help decide funding and services in your local area I see no valid reason not to complete it, even if you skip the optional questions.

I ticked the bisexual box. It will be interesting to see the analysis of the data. I hope people have been truthful though I suspect lots of the population won’t have been. Do you think more women than men will have identified as bi? |

They will get different funding depending on the demographic of the area.
Younger population with kids.
Large population of LGBTQI people.
Older population with ill health and a carer.
All different types of requirements and funding.

Very interesting.
Lisa put Bi, as she is, like 100%
I didn't. Even though, to an extent I am at the least bi curious.
Future generations will look back and this census will carry these details about us as people long after we're dead.
It's a shame that I feel a little bit shy about putting my real sexuality on the thing.
Also.
The "what gender do you identify as".
Is this a bit like the Jedi thing on the older census?
Where really, the question is more about what percentage of the population is religious in any way... And by putting Jedi, you're adding to the religious population inadvertently. |

I said 'No' to 'would I still have any of my medical conditions in a year's time' because I can't envisage lasting that long at the present rate of organic wastage!
One good thing is you can have a carer come round and stay overnight if needed when you are over 75 and at risk and I can't see anywhere it saying it has to be the same carer each night! (That's covid rules, not census, for clarity) |
