Kinky rope folks, whats your thoughts on rope diameter? Whats your go to diameter?
Do you think 3mm is too thin? (I would be using more wraps etc to compensate)
Just wondered what people thought |

"I had a go with a hawser once.
Hawser??
“ Hawser is a nautical term for a thick cable or rope used in mooring or towing a ship.” thanks Wiki! "
If it was twisted I can see how that could be very effective
Hmmmm puts me in mind of an idea |

3mm is to thin for me. My go to is 8mm but can work with 6mm. If you do suspension try a 10mm or higher. A |

As you know OP, and excuse the pun, I'm still learning the ropes, but from everything I've seen/read so far, 6mm seems almost to be the accepted average, but I'm happy to be corrected. Off the back of that, I'm working predominantly with 6mm jute. I'm told I've made some very nice 6mm coloured jute to play with. |

I am no expert on shibrai, but I would yes and no...
If you are doing intricate display work on say a hand, foot or head 3mm works well to develop patterns and form etc.
For bondage it needs to have a larger diameter to have less risk of nerve damage. Though incorrect tying can be harmful regardless of diameter. So know what you are doing is paramount and always have safety shears available.
You can by rope any time. You can't buy an arm or a leg to replace nerve damage...
I am hoping an individual with more experience can advise and add to this. |

"At what point does string become rope ? " If you take two or more pieces of thread and twist them, you have string, twine, or cord. 4. Combine two or more pieces of string and you now have rope. boom!

I found 8mm too thick as a go to personally
I've flown off 5,6 or 8mm again I don't like anything too thick |

Yep I agree 6mm is pretty much a standard. I just like to experiment etc and thought I'd canvas opinions |

"I told a lady I was into rope play but I was just stringing her along.
I might steel that!" haha feel free!
I
Rope play is not something I’d attempt. You have to know what you’re doing and judging by your pics, you obviously do. |

I haven't heard of many instants of nerve injuries from ground work, but I'm happy to be corrected on that. All rope carries risk, good point well made, thank you |

"At what point does string become rope ? "
I belive its a diameter thing but I'm sure someone Will know at what point it changes from string to rope, in a similar way a sheet changes to a line, but I think that has more to do with purpose that diameter |

3mm might be used for breast tying or decorative ties such as macrame, but generally not for any Japanese style tying.
Usually 5/6mm thickness is used for Japanese tying but using hemp or jute. In western/American bondage 8mm rope is regularly used in bondage but normally using synthetic or nylon rope.
If tying a woman who was above size 16 then 8mm may be recommended for comfort and also shows better in pictures.
I would not mention suspension in a Fab forum as it is serious edgeplay and should not be undertaken (in my view) without one to one coaching from a specialist. It is a tricky conjunction of knowing about anatomy, knowing the specific anatomy, knowing the correct tie for the person and type of suspension, knowing the correct tension of the rope for the tie, a passing knowledge of vectors and how hard points should be put up is essential as is some first aid in case things go wrong. However as in everything in modern life there are those who would disagree and feel YouTube videos are sufficient. |

No prob H, I have respect for your threads and contributions. But I did want to comment on suspension because my first rope play partner had her shoulder severely damaged by her previous partner doing suspension and not knowing what they were doing.
Otherwise, as much as I love Japanese rope I am not shibari police (although on a personal level I hate the Knotty Boys stuff). I remember being at a well known London rope venue where the person running the session got upset because someone (I knew) was using boating and climbing knots which the person running the session deemed unsafe!

Accidents happen and there seems to be a craze that everyone has to just push and push and push. People are getting hurt and ego is whats causing that!!
Yeah a friend from many moons ago would say how scouting knots were evil and shouldn't be used for bondage. But in all truth there are only so many bends, turns and hitches and every field calls them something different. Is a larks head bad if it isn't a cow hitch? Is a reef knot a disaster if I don't use a square knot?
Its all about having fun
I think the two knotty boys enabled a lot of people and got people involved in rope and while not really my taste either, I'm all for a more inclusive culture especially so far as rope is concerned |

"Personally I think 6mm is good for most things though I also have some 4mm which can be good for more intricate stuff or smaller areas. "
My goto currently is 5mm but I was just playing around with an "endless" rope and had some 3mm paracors kicking around.
And I like talking rope |

"It all depends on the size of the sail and the ropes duty. Very rare I go below 4mm"
So does a sheet go to a sail, while a line goes to something else? I never made a good sailor |

"6mm is the thinnest I will go for rope bondage and then you need to use multiple wraps to adequately spread the weight. I prefer 8mm rope."
I tend to use 8mm for suspension work, and the main line on the hoist etc |

I do floorwork. Haven't moved into the realms of suspension yet. |
