quite close to you |
The Doors- are a horrible collection of mediocrity and overblown shite
Velvet Underground- are torturous pissy art-wank
The Strokes- rich New Yorkers pretending to authentic heroin addicts
Oasis - riff stealing, 2nd rate Chalatans knock off, honestly their music is the sound of stale Stella
Madonna - scene-stealing-zeitgeist-chasing-media-whore and she cannot sing.
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - Pet Sounds is better.
The Shawshank Redemption - Made for Tv guff
The Mona Lisa - it’s much smaller than you think and if you walk down the stairs to the right of it is a statue that is 1397 Years older than it and shows greater talent

"The Beetles.
They are the one direction of their day.
How .
Literally invented a Style music and influence the next for 30 to 40 years..
Not the same."
Mad isnt it?
Literally invented modern music and then wrote one of the greatest albums ever.
Ed Sheeran is a shout. |

"Omg there's a lot of oasis hate here. That's mortally wounded me. I'll retreat into my cave
I won’t hurt your feelings by letting rip then.... I will keep that to myself "
We can agree to disagree on that one |

"Oasis
First 3 albums are good...not sure about the rest."
1st one would be in the greatest top 10 of all time.
I think people are getting over rated confused with not liking
If the Beatles are over rated I'd like to hear 10 more influential bands. |

There and to the left a bit |
"Christ almighty The Beatles being called the One Direction of their day
"
In fairness I can see the comparison with early Beatles but once they moved away from the whole mop top thing and actually developed absolutely no way |

I'd say if you did a survey, the majority would rate The Beatles as more important and influential than Kraftwerk... but they aren't. By that measure, they're overrated. |

So the majority would be wrong?Just in your opinion, or?
Kraftwerk without a doubt influential, but more so than The Beatles? |

Yeah, the majority would be wrong... Kraftwerk are more influential than the Beatles. As the older generation fades the numbers will probably shift and more recognition will be paid to Kraftwerk. The prevalence of electronic music will continue for a long time. |

"How can any music be overrated it brings joy to somebody so if you don't like it don't listen to it opinions are grand but sometimes there's no need to share everything."
Opinions are great, but you don't need to share everything

Considering they pretty much invented modern pop music ,id say they were pretty influential.
I'd say kraftwerk had a huge impact but not more than the beatles.
The Beatles went from I wanna hold your hand to tomorrow never knows in the space of 5 years. |

Invented modern pop music is a stretch. When they became wildly popular, were they doing anything which wasn't already being done by countless other 60s guitar bands? They were just better at it.
By the time they actually started experimenting and doing anything new they weren't really doing standard pop. Not arguing that they're not influential. They clearly are, particularly in indie music and pop-rock... but for me that influence is very overrated and doesn't stack up to Kraftwerk's legacy across techno, house, hip hop, dance, electronica, and pop too. |

There will always be room for all types of music, and Kraftwerk could certainly be classed as niche, in fact they invented their own genre.
You just don’t read or hear of as many current and past musicians citing Kraftwerk as you do The Beatles.
I don’t disagree that Kraftwerk are hugely influential, but not in the same way The Beatles were. |

They invented a genre which went on to spawn dozens of sub-genres which combined are arguably the largest sector of music being created today. They've been sampled by everyone from Coldplay to Jay-Z...
If anything the fact that they aren't more widely recognised lends to the argument that they're underrated compared to the overrated Beatles.
The Beatles were a wildly popular boy band, wrote some really great songs, took LSD and found a guy to play the sitar. |

Who were the before the beatles?
Buddy hollie?
They were certainly pioneers and triggered that entire 60s scene before moving into psychedelia.
I wouldn't dispute that kraftwerk were hugely influential, and would probally agree that they were underrated.
But for so many people to say the Beatles were so overrated, there must be a hell of a lot of bands who were more influential.
Obvs musical preferences is down to choice but to say they were over rated is bizarre. |

One of the greatest global influences of our time, and continue to be. Sadly though, an easy target. |

"In your humble opinion, the most overrated band or artist?
The Who and The Doors for me"
Think after '73 (Quadrophenia) The Who lost it big time. Townsend got rid of the Gibson SG guitar and their sound was never the same. Also very sloppy live due to Moonie and Townsend alcohol abuse. |

By the nature of the question the answers have to be about big popular artists. I'll go for The Beatles, The Clash and Oasis. I may be cheating including the world's biggest Beatles/Lennon tribute act but I loath Oasis |

The Beatles didn't invent pop-rock! There were piles of American bands and British bands copying them... the Beatles among them. All their early stuff fits entirely into a genre which was very popular at the time.
They also didn't invent psychedelia, but they did take it into the mainstream, thanks to that earlier success.
A lot of this thread is more about people saying they don't like a popular act... I like a lot of Beatles stuff. But the way that their achievements and influence is stated by their fans makes it clear to me they're overrated.
It's all good chat though! Would be better over a few pints... |
