Speed checks

Yep. Accepted I was speeding and did the course with no moaning about the technicalities of where the camera was parked or if its wheel was slightly on some property it shouldn't have been on or any of the other bullshit some people use to get out of something they knew they were doing.

"Has anyone on here been caught speeding"
Nope.... well yes but when I looked at them and told them.. but it's a metro.. they looked at me, the car, each other and decided that they needed to recalibrate the equipment..... thankfully for me they didn't check under the bonnet... as it was a lotus engined metro.
I however have never had anything since then... although done over 150mph on a track on a regular basis |

Numerous times, but nothing in the last 4 years.
I’ve been to court twice, had a 2 week Ban and also a speed awareness course.
No excuses, each time I was going too fast. I used to drive 30,000+ miles a year and whilst I’d never speed in towns and built up areas, would drive to ‘the road conditions’ elsewhere.
That being said I’ve never had or been involved in an accident and I’ve probably driven over 400,000 miles by now.
I really enjoyed the speed awareness course and it’s genuinely made me a more conscientious and safer driver. I think It should be compulsory for everyone after 5 years driving and then again after each 25.

I've been on two speed awareness courses. Both very interesting with the second being better than the first. I learned that 'variable speed" cameras on motorways are nothing of the sort. You cant speed up in parts and slow down in others which is what you'd expect to do from the name.. They just nab you if you exceed the limit. Those who go on the courses always complain that they were only going a few mph over. The response is.. If you were going more than that you wouldnt have been offered the opportunity to go on the course.. It would have been points on licence and a fine. Oh and for those who say they can't be much use if you went on two.. Id say, unfortunately for the second I missed a sign indicating a change of speed on the same stretch of road. I went back to check when I got the notification. |

Definitely agree about the speed awareness course. I found it useful.
Many of us also found out we could do 70 on a dual carriageway. Thought it was only 60. ![](/icons/s/redface.gif) |

I had points years ago for 46 in a 40 and 35 in a 30. A speed awareness course wasn't offered on either occassion
About this time last year I was caught on a mobile camera unit on the A1M at 79 and this time offered a speed awareness course. If I'd been travelling at 78 I would have got away with it
I took the course via Zoom and enjoyed it. The information given was excellent, well delivered and no one was asked how fast they were travelling when caught or made to feel ashamed
Have I changed my driving habits?
Well I was never one for massively speeding in a built up zone but I am very aware of my speed in 30 and 40 zones now
Being "done" at 79 has meant that I won't go above 80 on my speedo on the motorway. My true speed when it shows 80 is 75
The true test on motorways will be when the country is back to normal and if I'm running late. 30 and 40 zones I'll still be very careful

Yes twice.
Two courses of speed awareness. One of them I had to go back to the coastal town and do it there.... Overnight stay in a hotel with the then BF was a lot fun. |

Are you saying your speedometer is incorrect?"
I think he’s saying he knows the variance on his car. All speedometers are set fast so they show you doing a speed when you’re generally between 2-5mph under that.
I know when I’m doing 74 on the clock I’m actually at 70 bang on. That’s why you have an ‘allowance’ of I think 10% + 1mph before prosecution.

Surely a speedo shouldn't be out by 5+ mph? My car has both digital and analogue and so I use the digital one to monitor my speed... |

Unless a speedometer is being operated from a laser that measures between the vehicle and an immobile mass (eg ground) it will never be totally accurate there are too many variables. |

No, I get that. I was just surprised at how "out" some seem to be. If mine is that far out, I'll never ever be done speeding!! Which begs the question of why I was pulled over in my Renault Scenic mum-mobile back when I was at uni. Had been babysitting for a friend, she'd come back LATE and I was doing 36 in a 30 zone at 3am. I knew I was and the police guy who had The Chat with me had measured my speed basically exactly as I knew it was. This was an old 'T' reg car. I got a bit of a telling off and left to go home, which was about 100yds away! |

"Has anyone on here been caught speeding"
Yes, three times, two of which were on the same car journey, which was a bit shit. They were for 36 or 38 in a 30mph zone.
I have learned my lesson and I'm now the annoying person stuck in front of driving at 30mph. Luke |

I only looked at this thread because I read "Speed Checks" as "Spread Cheeks".
But since I'm here.....
Yes, several times, but nothing as I've grown older and more sensible.
Even managed to get banned at 19yo for clocking 105mph on the M62 ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

I don't have the mum-mobile anymore. I have an estate with roof rack fixings and turbo
I'm happy if my speedo is showing higher than my real speed. No chance of being done for speeding. But it's true that in the Scenic, PC Plod stopped me, citing the exact speed I was doing (36). Never been stopped after that and I was politely let off that time. |

"I got done 22mph in a 20 zone that hurt
I got away without a ban on 18 points but the lady in before me got a 3 month ban for doing 21 in a 20 , it’s much more serious speeding in a 20 zone "
It was very well frowned upon even though it went from 50-20 |

Yeah all my bikes have been around 10% over
Would be doing 33 for example and the little flashy thing telling me your speed would say 30 |

Most Speedo’s over read the speed.
Legally it can read 10% higher than you’re doing, but it can’t be a single 1% under.
So most manufacturers factor in a margin for error and they over read by about 3-5%.
So when you’re doing 70mph on the speedo it’s likely you’re only going 65 or so.

I did this experiment the other day off the back of this thread. Downloaded a speedo app and had Mr KC read out the values as I travelled on the M60. When my digital speedo says 72, the app said 70. Mine seems pretty accurate... |

The higher the speed the more accurate your speedo is likely to be
Do the experiment at 30 & 40 mph (in the appropriate zones) and don't forget the app reading will be a few seconds behind

"Yep, thought I'd got away with it as it took them nearly two months to send the letter as well. First offence though so just had to attend a course."
Then you should have told them to get lost as the letter has to arrive within 14 days of the offence otherwise it's null and void |

I shall, I just need to have a car companion to operate the app! |

This can happen if you change the wheel size on your car for instance.
The size change uncalibrates the speedo due to either more or less tyre areas (or something to do with that, cant mind in total)
Basically you need to calibrate you speedo, most dont which is why there is the 3-5% allowance as well as difference in lanes (slightly changes the distance which affect speed) one i remember from school distance = time/velocity.
Nowadays i don't bother, my car just ain't made for it tbh, too many folk on road who cant drive & tracks are available if i want to be a plum. |

My ex told me to slow down once as I was going too fast, the headboard was making to much noise banging on the wall and the lad in the flat downstairs used to complain next day about how we had kept him awake. |
