Hierarchy of rights .. who should trump who?

Jump to: Newest in thread

In the immortal words of Mrs Merton : Oooh let’s have a heated debate!

There’s been a lot of discussion over the last few years about equality and rights for all, but sometimes these can potentially conflict with each other, and when they do, who should take priority?

Before we start, let’s be clear in an ideal world everyone should, of course, be treated with respect and their opinions and perspectives should be given a safe environment to be expressed, and we should all live together in harmonious tolerance. That’s a given

But how do you rank when there’s a clash?

For example, Sexuality vs Religious views (eg whether LGBT+ teachings should be mandatory in religious schools - Christian or Islamic etc for example).

Or Trans rights vs those that say traditional CIS female-only safe spaces / refuges etc should be respected.

What about when race or culture clash with any of the above.

In the last 24 hours the concept of male curfews has been raised to deal with threats and misogyny towards women etc etc

Is there a hierarchy that we should adhere to?

So: Race, Sexuality, Gender Identity, Religion, Culture etc .. which is most important in determining societal policies or outcomes?

Me? Like I don’t know the answer, I’m just a simple country boy. But I’m sure you have some excellent opinions and insight...

Delightful Bliss

I take the opinion of in regards to all of the above choices that none of them matter, the only thing that should be important is that people stop being Cunts to one another.

I just think we are all as important as one another, and in an ideal world should be treated as such.

What a day that will be when it finally happens.

Now, is it time for wine ?

I agree with what both of the above say, absolutely, but in many instances - where there is a clash - can see both sides to the argument and it’s difficult to know where to go if you had to make a choice.

Take, for example, that religious baker that refused to make a wedding cake for a gay wedding as it was against their religious views.

Was the couple right to sue them and make them bake a cake against their religious views? Couldn’t they have just gone to another bakery?

Or was the bakery wrong / bigots to discriminate on sexuality?

Legally I think the couple won but morally I can see both viewpoints.

Did we ever resolve this?

Just thinking about the World Cup, and the adverse reaction to the Qatari’s views on same sex relationships, public displays of affection, the intake of alcohol etc etc.

Should we respect the views of different cultures and faiths, particularly in their country, or only when they align with our own personal views / morals?

Again I don’t know the answer, like the OP (whoever that was) I’m just a simple country boy too.

But where does all this fit in the hierarchy?

I'm fine respecting things like refraining from alcohol or snogging in public (despite being usually very touchy feely). What I can't respect and never will, is the mandatory or statutory subjugation of a section of a society, for simply existing/being themselves. Women. LGBTQ+ people. People of varied religious backgrounds. Etc. I do not respect some Western governments on their treatment of certain groups, e.g. USA death penalty use, lack of fertility rights, and I express my lack of respect by not visiting the USA, in the same way as I will not visit certain other countries.

No country is perfect, including the UK, but at least we have legal protections against discrimination for being "you" enshrined in law. Whether those laws are upheld and adequately enforced is a different discussion, but at least they exist.

can’t disagree with that. Frightening to think that being gay was illegal in the UK in the not too distant past!

As we had a good mass debate in misogyny earlier (well done to everyone who took part!) I wondered if, albeit tangential, it would be a good time to bump and continue to discuss this again.

The OP (whoever they were, sadly UNLOSed, although they seem like a jolly good egg tbf) seemed to start this when there was a debate about installing male curfews so women could feel safe at night.

So far, from the limited replies it has it would appear that sexuality trumps religion. So we have the first rung of the hierarchical ladder in place (unless you disagree of course) ..

I don’t know the answer to it all (what with being a simple country boy with an ignorant upbringing) but can see we have some learned individuals on here that can hopefully resolve this once and for all?

It would probably just be a forum of Men talking about women and sex that they want to be having, replies they aren’t getting etc. that sounds like a scary place. "

No i dont think there should be a hierachy, but common sense should probably lead the way. Thats for sure

To be fair I think the Honourable Comtessa probably nailed this in the first reply to the thread
