OK Fabbers, here's a debate opener:

Drag, as an entertainment form, relies on an exaggeration of what is perceived as femininity. It is usually (although not exclusively) perpetrated by those who identify as male.

So, legitimate artform or female appropriation and exploitation? Discuss.

After an overwhelming few days / weeks / months on Social Media, I’m on a well-earned Identity Politics amnesty break day.

I’ll pop back tomorrow with an opinion.

And as a supplementary, a male fetishising dressing, with make up wig etc. (ie, not as a transgender/transition situation) - misogynistic sexualisation of femininity or legitimate self expression?

It's an interesting issue. For me, although drag has a connection to sort of hyper-exaggerated femininity, it's really it's own thing with a very long lineage and internal culture. Drag artists aren't really trying to be women, they're being drag artists.

It can be argued that it could be both somehow. It depends on the perspective of feminity drags drawn on which ultimately stems from what society perceives as feminine.

It could be argued that women have appropriated certain characteristics and labelled them feminine to prevent men exhibiting them.

If sexuality and arguably gender are a continuum - then this whole debate lacks any validity.

Art form - it see it as a celebration of feminity. Playing with attributes, styles, manners considered as feminine and elevating them to an art.

Also I don’t understand the concept of female appropriation. There are various degrees of feminity in each of us and it’s not a finite resource: by adopting feminine attributes, you’re not depriving anybody else. So why feel threaten and claim feminity is the exclusive reserve of women?

I think drag is an artform

It goes back thousands of years

I think it's wonderful, especially the old school stuff

I love watching the videos on the RVT FB page of the shows in the 60's & 70's
