Watching this on channel 5 (2 part documentary) and its just harrowing.

The abduction, the search, the investigation, the funeral, the trial, the verdict and the continued fight for a more appropriate sentence.

Such a tragic event that shocked so many people.

Was going to post about that but havent had a chance to watch it yet.

Me mum said it was very harrowing.

I can remember it vividly.

The monday after was 1 of the most surreal days I've ever known.. it was like the entire city was in shock.

I think he went missing on the Friday and I think people assumed he would turn up.

I think he was found on the Sunday. There was always stories that the full extent if what they did never came out.

Fucking heartbreaking.

Makes you so fucking angry, but feel absolutely lost and helpless all these years later and like I should have done something. I was a kid myself hundreds of miles away yet still feel the "if only I was there I may have been able to do something"

Would any sentence have been long enough?

At some point they were going to be let out.

The bigger question is how can kids do something so evil?

I don't think they published the full details of what was done because the bare details were bad enough to read at the time and they didn't want to sexualise the killing .What they did you wouldn't have expected most ten year olds to do or even think about .Brings to mind the type of parenting the boys had was to blame for the way they were.Kids these days can see more on the internet but in 1993 you can only assume abuse or exposure to porn resulted in what they did.We can't always be responsible for what our kids do but in my opinion the families created the feral vicious killers they were aged 10.Denise Fergus blames herself ,its heartbreaking to witness her pain .Such a good mother and she lost her son because of the feckless unfit parenting of others. No justice .

Have you seen part 2 yet?

In no way excuses them, but a horrific glimpse Into those boys lives,

The 38 close witnesses will always have to live with this as anyone of them could of stopped it, a very sad event indeed

I think it was nice of the mum to say she doesn't blame them though. To an outsider looking in it just looked like brothers walking together.

This is going to be very controversial but I myself believe the Death Penalty for child killers.

I know the killers of James were only kids themselves and how could our justice system and society put kids to death but would it act as a serious deterrent to ALL!?!

I’d be interested to know your thoughts and options on this.

Please keep it civil tho folks as we are bound to have different views....but the thread is with James in mind so let’s use the correct respect.

I still remember the dark cloud it left on society and humanity.

If anything good came out if it, it was heartwarming to witness the genuine remorse snd compassion total strangers felt for that event abd brought people together.

Totally disagree. What they boys done was beyond awful but what they boys went through in their upbringing no deterrent would have changed the outcome. These boys didn't have a normal life and would have mostly killed. If not James then someone else

All for the death penalty for murderers, they are useless animals and no good to society, but sorry cant agree with it for 10 year olds. Maybe 16+ at that age they are fully aware what they are doing.

Oh I can't watch it.

I remember at the time how awful it was.

And wondering what sort of experiences these children had been through in their short lives to have done something so evil.

This happened very shortly after had my first daughter. Can vividly remember sitting reading the story in the newspaper ctlrying my eyes out and hugging our little girl close to me. I felt such deep sorrow for that little boy and pure hatred for the evil little bastards that did it. 10 years old is old enough to know what they had done was wrong that’s why they lied when first talked to by the police.

Watch the documentary. They knew what they were doing was wrong. They knew they were going to kill him.

I don't believe in the death penalty personally but to say 10 year olds don't know what they were doing was wrong is incorrect.

I think there is an argument to say they knew what they were doing but didnt know the full consequences.

As for the death penalty.. you cant go round executing 10 year olds.

Their upbringings were fairly similar. There is an article from 2000 that brings their upbringing to the forefront again, as they were due for release, look up Did bad parenting really turn these boys into killers? by the guardian

At the time video games and violence in movies/tv shows (it was thought one of the causes of their actions was watching Child’s Play 3) was also highlighted as a possible influence, to the point where TV channels bought in stricter codes of conduct on what it could show, when and with warnings.

I did put "fully" aware, im sure they knew what they were doing, but i can't believe a 10 year old would understand how their actions, that day, would alter their lives forever. Im certainly not condoning what they did, i just cant agree with the death penalty for 10 year olds, jesus what is our country coming to if we scoop that low ??
