Right.... this is a genuine story...
On my way home from a bike ride I pulled into a petrol station n sat down on the wall for a few minutes rest.... decided to look at the newsstand at the front page news and noticed that a wad of cash was literally hanging out of the cash machine!! (ATM) so I panicked and went in to the shop and said...does anyone own this ?? Luckily a woman said she just been to the ATM machine and noticed she didn't have any cash in her purse! So I gave her her cash and she couldn't thank me enough!! She touched me on the wrist ARRRRGH!! (Covid alert) so I rubbed my wrists in the nearest santizer machine! N said I was glad I saved ur day!
Must have been about £400 odd in that wod of cash!
Would you have done the same? Or ran off with it.... |

However it was alarming out bleep bleep etc... that's when I noticed it. |

Yes, I would have done the same because, I would have been concerned that it was possibly belonging to a confused old person on the brink of dementia, as my mum was before I took over her health and welfare. I would have also been aware that the rightful owner of the cash couldn't have been far away because, if cash dispensed by an ATM is not removed within so many seconds, it automatically sucks it back in, and credits the persons account, that's not to mention the possibility of the ATM having a security camera capturing my image taking the cash. |

"Hold on !!! So you ran to the checkout and waved a handful of cash around saying who's money is it for then this random woman to say " yes that's mine ""
It wasn't a random woman! Because the woman who said it was her money had gone to the cash machine first...n I recognized what clothes she was wearing. |

Convenient you remembered that after someone just said they couldn't be too far away lol

Ahhh this wasn't clear in your OP op
If you had said you knew what the lady looked like and went to find her all would have been clear.
Thats a good deed done |

Well done on doing the right thing, to be honest (and this isn’t to detract from what you did) I genuinely think the majority of people would do the same as people are (mostly) honest other than a minority of scrotes.
It couldn’t have been there long as cash machines beep at you and take the cash back in if not removed after a very short while |

"I thought atm only gave out 300 quid a time but I’d have handed it in to the shop also. Well done x"
They can dish out more than that. My set limit is £500, you can request a larger daily limit from your bank |

Mine won't dish out more than £200 in 24 hrs, obviously I need to change banks |

If you hasn’t known who’s cash it was, then handing it to the staff of the petrol station would make sense. They could then confirm on CCTV who’s it might be.
If you do get short changed by a cash machine, or if it doesn’t give you cash but still charges you, it’s actually really easy to sort.
A quick call to the cash machine company and they’ll put you in touch with the right part of your bank. Then a refund is organised within 24 hrs usually.
I’m guessing the owner of the cash could have done this if the machine has taken it back in. |

I left £80 in the cash line as my daughter distracted me. Someone took it and didn't hand it in. It was annoying as it was one of those months where I didn't have any extra cash. Next time someone sees money out the machine I hope they do hand it in cos you really don't know how much that person needs it

Not the same thing but when we were little my mom had a purse nicked whilst out shopping.
She never had much money and it must have been such a terrible feeling having to feed a family and not much to fall back on. |

Guess you were both lucky in the timing? ATM are designed to retract the money from the dispenser if it is not claimed within a short period of time once dispenced to stop such a thing happening, effectively returning it to the account owner. |
