Why do we do well in sports that aren't really sports ?
Rowing and shooting and horse riding and so on ?
Don't wish to take anything away from them for a job well done, but when did we last have a succession of medals in 'proper' sports like gymnastics and athletics for example ?
Have we got it in us as a nation to nurture an athlete such as Bolt ?
Or is it that certain countries do better at certain sports ?
Is it down to good training or is it a genetic thing ?
Ethiopians / Kenyans etc always do well at the long distance running for example
The former Eastern Bloc countries have done historically very well in gymnastics and so on |

I know they're sports really
I would say that athletics in general and the running in particular though are the high points of the Olympics for many and are seen as the 'prestige' events
We've had a few winners over the years but it's not something we really excel in as a nation.
I'm sure we have the training facilities, but do we have the talent to nurture and, if we do, how do we get the best out of them ? |
