I’m not sure if this has been done or even if it would work but as it’s WBD, let’s see what folks think.

As many of us are stuck at home and shorn of social interaction, how about we pick a book, read it, then discuss it after a week or two?

Anyone can nominate a book but if by general approval and voting, we pick, then read.

Thoughts folks?

That topic is too heavy for me for a book club. I wouldn't read it.

I read quite a few of these genre when I was recovering from an operation and I decided I don't want to read any more.

That could be a good idea, if people had varying preferences.

If there were lots of doom and gloom, or psychological real-life stories I wouldn't be able to read them.

Maybe have a criteria we can decide on?

I thought that this might be an option but it depends on how many people take part. If it’s a handful then that’s an idea, if it’s lots, then that will be difficult.

I think that picking a book between us, then going from there, just to get the ball rolling

Why not read extracts.... There are many available in PDF form. They'd be available online and no one would be excluded on the basis of cost.

This could be important given that when a book is chosen probably only the 'chooser' will like it in any case.

I think if we share reviews of the book people can say yes or no to make it fairer. Cost needs to be a factor for sure else this is just another monthly bill for people.

I think we should all be on the same page, so to speak, and reading the same book. Or the conversation will be disjointed.

We must stick to forum rules too and not discuss anything not allowed.

Agreed happy to buy a book a month. If this doesn’t work for others maybe they can do a spin off that works for them. Otherwise it falls into the category of trying to please everybody and not working for anybody.

"Another suggestion .....

Rather than all buying and reading the SAME book .....

People read a book of their own choice and then leave an indepth review of it for others or answer Q's on it or both.

I’m not sure about that and threads like that have been done before. I hoped for a more in depth discussion and a connective experience from reading the same book

Agreed happy to buy a book a month. If this doesn’t work for others maybe they can do a spin off that works for them. Otherwise it falls into the category of trying to please everybody and not working for anybody.

For me, a book club is where you read a book and discuss it between you, to dissect it or just say why you like or dislike it.

I just posted a book of the month from Hay so that was a no brainer. Bound to be excellent. But it's probably a £20 hardback. I'm fine with that but we should factor cost in. World of books and we buy books do second hand paperbacks for pennies.

I'm happy to read my copy and post it on to someone else if they're on hard times. Loads of us are.

That’s a good idea, I didn’t look at cost but that should be factored into the equation, otherwise this will just exclude people which is the opposite of the idea

I think that a few weeks at least, we all have busy lives and stuff going on.

I think that we can focus on the books ‘now’ before we get into how we choose the next one. Let’s deal with this before the future

Once a book threads started it’s just there to be picked up whenever as people read the book so there’s really no limit for people to join whenever.

A book a month sounds doable, I wouldn't exclude anyone from suggesting myself. It's possible some won't feel up to sharing their own writing, but that's up to Tea / everyone else.

That looks interesting, that’s definitely one to consider!

Any other options?

Liking the sound of that! Also want to read the midnight library by Matt haig at some point.

I read his ‘how to stop time’ and really enjoyed that.

I like this option"

I couldn't finish 'how to stop time' but I have struggled to get enough focus to read this last year. This one does sound good though.

I go to a book club and people out forward suggestions and then we vote. Usually pick a few months worth at a time. We also have a max of 300 pages as a lot of us are working mums and can't always finish a book in a month!

"A friend recently recommended Lanark by Alasdair Grey.

Reviews are giving it huge thumbs up.

Wow, published in 1981. I'd really thought I would have heard of this by now.

He said it recently was back in print. I don't know why it has become a cult classic.

I'm definitely intrigued by it.

I'm going to buy the physical edition when book shops reopen.

I don't really like reading on a screen.

Shops ? Amazon ?

It's my what am I going to do after lockdown dream.

Walk around a bookshop with my sister and sniff books.

Have you ever been to the Strand Bookstore on Broadway? A bookshop the size of an out of town Tesco with ladders to get to the top shelves. The smell is incredible.

No! I'm going to suggest we go there first. Might not sniff actual books just yet though."

Trilogy? There's about 9 in that series! I remember enjoying the 1st 5 or 6 and then drifted away. First one was great as I recall.

The first 3 came as a trilogy pack, in preparfor the new movie"

I'll investigate this film business. I hope they're goimg full Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy on it. Only way Dune will work on screen.

I remember a mini series from the early 2000s and I enjoyed it and the trailers for the new one look good so fingers crossed

"So what’s happening here?

Shortlist is finished ^, we're waiting while we recruit more members. Tea will announce the vote. We each cast one vote. The most popular book is our book of the month. We each read it and discuss it in a future thread."

That’s exactly the state of play!

"I've been in a Book club for years. I think they are good fun and make you read things you wouldn't necessarily choose yourself.

The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger

&

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

Two of my favourite books and good for discussion

"

I think that's the best thing isnt it?

You get to read books you wouldnt normally try.

Ordered. Whoop!

That Amazon book warehouse on the M1 is gonna be wondering why they've suddenly shifted 50 copies of that book to various parts of the country.
