Am I the only one that doesn't understand text language?
I have a guy message and honestly I had no idea what he was talking about so out of curiosity I asked him what he was talking about as he still sent back a message full of text speak.

It's a useful skill to have. I can't send messages 5 times faster on my Nokia 3310 by saying 'c u l8r m8'.

I don’t mind it, I understand some people will use it, it’s texting and telling much about someone from their pixels sent on a screen is difficult for me.
Lol  m8 2day etc, I understand it, I like to think I am fluent in many languages, it makes me fell sophisticated.
Funny thing is, it takes more taps to type some.  |

We hate text speak, we find it so lazy and difficult to decipher - its not like you have to pay per letter any more!
Acronyms such as lol, DTF, omg are about as much as we can tolerate. The worst ones at "2" instead of "to" and "use" instead of "yours" |

They are logging on with Nokia 3310s now.
I mean I can’t get my head around why it’s now needed with actual keyboards.
Back in the day (yes, I said that like a stroppy teenager ) you used the m8 and 2nite because it was quicker with the tapping of the number buttons.
But every phone is now a smart phone with keyboards. So just why has that language still used? 
But like I said, although I don’t, I let it slide talking To anyone as I grew up with it and I understand it. |

This  it's a pet hate of mine, for sure. Even if I liked everything else about a potential meet, this would be enough to put me off. |

I can understand it once had a purpose, text messages were limited to 159 characters including spaces so it saved you money by making your message shorter but now that it has no purpose and in most cases, predictive text also spells your words correctly too it no longer has a use and is now often more effort to type this way as well, its pointless.
It's not edgy or cool, it's lazy and as many have said above, a turn off.
There are a few that are fine like LOL or FAF but that's it.....off you fuck with your shitty typing, I'm not interested now. |

It's just a sign that you and me and millions of others are getting older.
I'm pretty sure we all had slang words we used when we were younger that our oldies didn't understand.
To say someone is lazy just because you don't understand a different generations way of communicating isn't fair, my kids use it and they are a million miles away from being lazy.
So I think this use of text speak is just a different generation doing the same.
Language evolves and I'm pretty sure that if somebody sent me a message written with a quill from Victorian times I would struggle to read it.
My son messages me using it and sometimes I make up a reply using gobbledygook made up text acronyms just to confuse him  |

I will admit I'm getting older and language does develop but when I sent a message saying that I didn't understand his message and to get in effect the same message back full of text speak, it does show a lack of decorum.
I know in the good old days when we had the old Nokia it was helpful text speak but today we manly use smartphones so there is little need for it.
It's just a sign that you and me and millions of others are getting older.

I might have been a bit harsh in saying about performance in bed, but it did annoy me that I said I didn't understand the message because of the language and he message back still using at of text language. So my apologies x |

I'm dyslexic too, but I do agree with you a whole message using it. Makes my head spin, I think used as abbreviations is fine a whole message is a different matter x |

Personally think it's another generation's 'new' language and am pretty much ambivalent about it, why waste energy or emotion on something so trivial? And linking it to sexual prowess totally baffles me to be honest! |

I had to add the line about no text speak back onto my profile, I don't get many messages, but I like to be able to respond to those I do! And if it's all text speak, I'm just not going to bother!
If a few extra characters are that much effort then I don't think you deserve my efforts replying |

Smartphones don't necessarily help with spelling. Mine constantly tries to change my name, for example, despite adding it to the dictionary. Also my phone is set up for both English and Spanish so occasionally the odd español word creeps in. Like ocasión instead of occasion.... |

It's not something I like reading either. Had its place when text messages were limited to short messages but not much need for it now.
It also has to do with appropriateness. Might be fine with a mate from school, but when addressing a relative stranger it's courtesy to make your message easily readable.
I once had a message on another site Where Every Word Started With A Capital With No Punctuation. It was obviously a pointless conversation (she was in the USA) so I asked why she did it as its harder to read, and surely harder to write. She got very indignant and told me she went to college and that's how they taught it so she was right... |

Some interesting comments, how many would consider Shakespeare lazy or stupid? I guess it’s natural for language to evolve, I often use language that older colleagues do not understand the meaning of and vice versa |

I despise text speak in the manner of "U" "2" "lol" as I consider it lazy or uneducated. Being on Merseyside, I also hate the "ye" instead of yes; the use/yous instead of you. I will rightly or wrongly attribute this to being uneducated. And don't get me started on "bbe" instead of babe (which in itself, raises my hackles!) All of these would definitely put me off meeting someone.
But I do find it's different to spelling, "wot" were/where & there/their & should of instead of should have I can just about accept. And things like asap, tbh, imo, etc are now accepted in the mainstream. I know I'm a bloody spelling nazi & a snob - I just can't help it.
But dyslexic messages or typos(of which I do many - autocarrot) can usually be spotted, and I have no issue with those.

IKR! It has its place, I mean YMMV but IDK if I mind it so much. I guess it depends on the situation. I certainly wouldn't write my wedding vows like that and don't speak like that IRL but it doesn't put me off NE1 just for that.

Spelling mistakes happen I make loads of them , and yes phones do change words my daughter's name for one ,so much so I use her nickname now.
I the problem i have is when people use text language on purpose and when you ask them what they mean they back a message still full of text language which I didn't understand or would not have asked them to clarify what they were saying x
I am not a snob or uneducated I just don't understand text language. |
