Another thread had me thinking about this - do you think you're rather predictable in how you respond to a thread? The threads you start? Do you try and mix things up occasionally, post in an unexpected thread, reply unexpectedly or are you happy in your groove?
I'd like to think I'm quite good at knowing how others will respond (but that's a predictable comment from me!). Take the secret service or threads of that ilk - I'm quite good at reading voices and knowing who has sent what... is that weird? Probably. |

Not weird at all Meli , I'm pretty sharp on that. I'm just random and post whatever nonsense enters my head really |

I play forum bingo, I can predict what other people are going to say, who’s going to show up on a given thread, I know what words they will use sometimes, but I know what the general vibe of their comment will be, as for me, I never know what I’m going to write, cause it’s a stream of consciousness that goes beyond me, all I know is it’s out there in the ether and I’m just antenna to channel what it is.
Let me guess Meli, you knew I was going to say that ?! |

I think I'm pretty predictable. I randomly post on whichever thread takes my fancy but I think I stick to my particular brand of "weirdness" a bit too much. I have the capacity to be chilled out/make a serious comment and I do think I should show that side of me more.
A bit of a 'class clown' complex come to think of it. Hiding behind the persona to protect the actual me. |

It depends on my mood what I post on these days. I did only post on the fun threads, but I do like a good discussion too. Do I think people 'know' what I'm going to say. Probably. But It's not my business what others think.

I've been told I'm consistent in my posts so from that it's only logical that I'm also predictable - I also know some people can *know* it's me without seeing who posted.
I can't see that changing a great deal either because above anything I'm authentically me, and therefore post based on my thoughts and opinions, which don't change a great deal, although am open to having them challenged even though I'm a stubborn git and rarely change them unless I can see I got it completely wrong.
After five years here I can also pick out others regulars from their posts alone, or know they will join certain threads and what they'll likely say usually. |

I prefer not thinking about a certain style of posting as you can almost become a parody of yourself if you try to maintain it.
I reckon I'm fairly inoffensive in my posts, don't stir the pot but will never post anything mind blowing either |

I’d like to hope I am a bit predictable with how I will respond, as I just do me. I can’t be bothered playing up to other people’s ego’s or serving their need for validation and with a web forum you don’t need to be invited into the conversation to leave your mark (whether wanted or not).
With the constant reiteration of the same forum threads it does become a bit repetitive, and you can usually guess who will turn up and what the essence of their post will be. |

Oh to add to my earlier post, before it reset itself at the weekend, my predictive text often completed sentences on here for me
For example,I only had to start typing "Screw The Roses..." and it would fill the rest in |

I'm pretty predictable, and totally fine with that.
Except when I'm having a bad day. Then I might write something completely out of left field and hit post before I've had a chance to rethink it. |

Yes - I'm on brand 24/7. You can't spend all these months building a brand only to deviate from it.
It'd be like when [BRAND] changed their logo to that other thing. Completely disastrous*

"What is predictable is how people respond to certain posters."
Yes, I've found this! I know I do it to certain posters as well though, I think that's friendship/being comfortable. Sometimes my language changes to be more in line with theirs which is weird to read back on. |

Adopting a bit of a persona is understandable. I do that. Meli is a bit of an obnoxious gobpoo at times - I'm far more prone to overthinking and self doubt than I let on. I don't think there's anything wrong with posting in any style - it's more curiosity.

I don't arse lick. If I'm in a sad mood my reply will be different than if I'm in a happy mood.
I sometimes change my mind after reading people's thoughts on some subjects. I'm open to that; I wasn't born with pre-loaded opinions. Life experiences have changed me. |

No, you're spot on! I chose predictable because it was an easy word given I'd read it in another thread. Also it made the OP sound snazzy and I'm all for that! I suppose the part I'm mainly interested in is reading other voices and how easily you think yours is? I know that certain words I use are tells of me - like an incorrect declension etc. If I take part in a secret thread more often than not I try and hide my normal voice. |

I'm predictable. Usually find me in musical threads or something that people need help with.
I used to be able to read the room a lot when I was here last time but dynamics change, there are lots of new people and as such, it's going to take a while before I know how they will react.
Looking forward to it though! |

You're stubborn Gemini? I had no idea, completely missed that one. Guess I'm not as good at reading as I'd like to think I am.
The final paragraph is interesting - knowing who'll respond to certain threads and what they'll say. Sometimes I'm tempted to start a thread but I'm arrogant and think I'll know the way it goes. |

Yes, this is along my line of thought as well - overthinking and trying to post in a certain way can lead to us almost parodying ourselves. We all have good/bad days. Maybe people avoid the forum when they are having one? |

An interesting premise!
I like the way that a few folks dislike the idea of being predictable but then we value the nature of being consistent. Chaos is generally bad and order is a positive but being able to tune into people so you know their responses is a negative?
I realise that I’m adding value judgements onto statements but I’m reading a little between the lines here.
To answer the OP, I’m sure that I have threads that I’d rather post on and a certain type of thread that I’d rather post. At times it can be Groundhog Day on here when it’s the same people over and over, posting the same to each other but that can be comforting too. |

No, that's not quite what I was saying but an interesting take on it. I'm asking people if they feel it's easy to read others, can they do so? Are the forums quite formulaic? Do we post in particular styles, with a certain voice and if yes, are we aware of it?
But I like your so basically nevertheless GMC. |

Yes! I think some have taken it to mean a bad sort of thing but there's something oddly reassuring about reading people and knowing their usual patterns. I think that's part of why I have the job I do, I find this sort of thing fascinating. Your posting response style is very much solid in my mind - I like that. |

Am I predictable ? Most of the time.
My posts change though. Just as we do during the day in work or the pub ( remember those ) or with the family .....
Some posts require a certain way of responding. As do some people.
It would be bloody odd if we spoke in the same way to everybody and to every subject matter regardless. |

I'm not going to reply to everyone because the sea of my name staring back at me is irritating me. Also I didn't intend for the thread to be that sort!
I think your value judgements are spot on Tea, I've read similar myself. I don't see it as negative being able to read others, nor do I see that having a clear voice that allows others to read you is necessarily a bad thing. I do find it oddly comforting knowing some threads will attract the same attention, some posters the same responses.
We all respond differently depending on our moods, our situation and sometimes others can pick up on those. That's not a bad thing. |

I agree with you completely. I think that it’s quite fun how we respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways, it’s how we build friendships, connections and relate to each other over time.
I see it as a positive in pretty much every way |
