Fitness challenges for March

Hello everyone

As some will know I am a keen runner and in January I completed the virtual Spine Challenge, all 268 miles.

I have given myself time off during feb to rest, recover and consider my next challenge.

So today I have persuaded my boyfriend to run 100 miles in 48 hours with me

We start just under 3 weeks of training tomorrow and our challenge date is Friday 19th March from 8am.

Every 4 hours (day & night) we will set off to run 8.4 miles, probably give us a rest period of 2.5 hrs. We will repeat this 12 times in 48 hours.

We have lots of considerations to take into account and are both experienced runners, just not done something quite so challenging. Why are we doing this? Why not is my answer, I want to push myself mentally, emotionally as well as physically. Friends and family will hopefully be able to show support on route to encourage us to complete it.

What fitness goals or challenges have you set for yourself or have we inspired you to start a fitness journey. Whatever it is I would love to know.

My fitness goal is to do the Lakeland 10 peak challenge in July 2022.

It's a way off, as I have lots of training to fit in between now and then.

I walk around 10 miles a day at work 6 days a week, think if I do running on top off that I would waste away.

I will however be starting back at the gym for the first time in a few years when they reopen to get my summer bod ready

I'm switching it up a bit and I'm doing 500 kettlebell swings every day in March. I'll add in a few other lifts in between sets but mostly just focusing on swings

I had goals for this year and all was going well until I got injured. Was well on target for the below.

300kg squat

200kg bench

320kg deadlift

Rest of this year is pretty much a none starter now with having to rehab, just keeping in some sort of shape is now my goal.

This is awesome and your natural physique is fantastic, so you won't need to put much effort in for a summer bod.

I think I could benefit from that too. I will be doing yoga throughout the month to help my muscles flexibility and recovery.

Oh no, so sorry to hear of your injury...it must be frustrating to have to take such a step back but you need to heal and strengthen as you will already know. I wish you a speedy recovery.

No this is something we have mused over for a few weeks and are just organising it for ourselves. There is a similar virtual event in April but we have already thought of April's challenge....

Still in search off that 20kg 300 sit-ups geting closer 230 so far

Also just pushed 35kg L shape pull ups the other day for 6 sets off 8

It's a recurrence of an old one I did 4 years ago in competition.

Partial dislocation of 2 ribs, collapsed under a 275kg squat, landing tear in right shoulder and damaged ligaments in right ankle.

Each time it heals weaker so this could be the nail in the coffin for power lifting

I intend to do a local 10k by wheelchair (was meant to be last May but on hold, obviously). It's a very hilly course so a challenge for the wheelchair.

I'd like to do a half marathon just for fun at some point this summer, not bothered about time.

I've just taken up horse riding again, first time since my disability, so trying to re teach myself to ride with a flappy left leg.

My friend tore both quads squatting 270 huge numbers though luckily he was training and had the safety bars in...

If it does go ahead, I am meant to run the London Marathon in October.

I’ve just taken the first steps back to fitness in February, getting comfortable with running again plus some strength training. Slowly but surely, I feel my fitness is coming back.

So my fitness goal is to complete the London Maraton in under 6 hours and not dying in the process!

I don't try to set myself targets that are too far away because I get demotivated if something doesn't pan out the way I'd like it to. I usually just take things a week at a time and see where it takes me

The Snowdon marathon in October is such a special event for me, I have been a spectator for a few years and now its my turn to participate.... gulp.

You look outstanding, you won't need the gym too much when they reopen.

This is awesome, keep me posted as I will hopefully be running the Snowdon marathon in Oct. It would be great to see how our training is progressing

Haha we are mad aren't we. He tried to persuade me to do 50 miles in 48 hrs but I was having none of it.

Kettlebells are great, need to learn how to do them right though. An awful lot of people make a right mess of them

I know I can do 10k in a time, but not attempted such a long stretch of uphill I did 12.5k locally last May, in lieu of the actual event (yes, my estimation of distance was wrong!)

Never tried the half marathon distance so that's just a proof of my shoulders being able to sustain it....

I rode from being a child but stopped after my daughter was born...

I'd be happy with 6 sets of 8 pull ups unweighted, maybe 3 of each set as an L - never mind about half a person hanging on me, that's pretty impressive

Oh you have been around horses for a large part of your life then, it must feel fantastic to return to something you must feel is part of you.

Good luck with the 10k. Out of interest, what are downhills like in a chair? On a bike the efficiency of the wheels allows a lot of the energy expended getting up them to be recovered but I'm not sure anyone would want to be rolling a wheelchair down hill at 20mph+ I guess that, much like running, gentle downhills help a lot, steep downhills are hardwork having to brake?

Understandable, I think any more and it would be considered non-essential travel

Thank you, I think after a few years of trying I'm finally beginning to find what works but always looking for new things to tweak here and there to keep the body guessing

Unfortunately my fitness plans are on hold as I was diagnosed with cancer but I'm still managing my pilates, have been riding a few times and walk when I can. I'd like to do a sponsored walk for Macmillan in the future, when I have more strength.

It's an interesting question and depends entirely on how potholed the pavements are. You CAN do 20mph downhill but if you hit a pothole, or a big stick, or a stone, your front castors stop dead and you get catapulted into the ground

On decent pavements, I can go jolly fast. I filmed myself whizzing downhill last summer actually, one handed chair control and my phone in the other!

You lose the benefit of the downhill almost as soon as the gradient starts to increase so there's little to be gained to get back up the other side. That's pure shoulder power. I weigh about the same as a pygmy hippo so my shoulders have a lot of weight to shift, in a seated position, uphill. Gotta get your shoulders over the wheels if you can. I don't have a road racing chair (far too expensive )

I'm not sure which I'm dreading most, forcing myself out the door for another 8 miles at 4am the second night or coping with an exhausted, underfuelled and emotionally fragile girlfriend

I am sorry to hear of your illness, but I love that you get outdoors when you can. The great outdoors helps me get through my life challenges too.

I’ve just taken the first steps back to fitness in February, getting comfortable with running again plus some strength training. Slowly but surely, I feel my fitness is coming back.

So my fitness goal is to complete the London Maraton in under 6 hours and not dying in the process!

This is awesome, keep me posted as I will hopefully be running the Snowdon marathon in Oct. It would be great to see how our training is progressing

I'd like to do a half marathon just for fun at some point this summer, not bothered about time.

I've just taken up horse riding again, first time since my disability, so trying to re teach myself to ride with a flappy left leg.

Good luck with the 10k. Out of interest, what are downhills like in a chair? On a bike the efficiency of the wheels allows a lot of the energy expended getting up them to be recovered but I'm not sure anyone would want to be rolling a wheelchair down hill at 20mph+ I guess that, much like running, gentle downhills help a lot, steep downhills are hardwork having to brake?

It's an interesting question and depends entirely on how potholed the pavements are. You CAN do 20mph downhill but if you hit a pothole, or a big stick, or a stone, your front castors stop dead and you get catapulted into the ground

On decent pavements, I can go jolly fast. I filmed myself whizzing downhill last summer actually, one handed chair control and my phone in the other!

You lose the benefit of the downhill almost as soon as the gradient starts to increase so there's little to be gained to get back up the other side. That's pure shoulder power. I weigh about the same as a pygmy hippo so my shoulders have a lot of weight to shift, in a seated position, uphill. Gotta get your shoulders over the wheels if you can. I don't have a road racing chair (far too expensive )"

What you said about the front wheels is what would worry me, unlike a bike the wheel base on a chair is pretty short and as you say, the front wheels are basically castors. Fair play, I would be seriously nervous at any kind of speed.

My front castors are 1.25” diameter solid PTE wheels, that's all I've got apart from the 24x1" rear wheels! I generally throw caution to the wind and whizz freely at high speeds but need to keep the hands handy for emergency stops

I have been known to eat an ice cream while sailing downhill too

I, Mrs, haven't set a personal challenge this year yet. I have increased my fitness and overall health dramatically over the last 2 years and have built up lots of muscle where I never had muscle so my aim is to keep on gaining strength, fitness and good health.

I think my goals for March are to get back to pre lockdown fitness levels and hopefully then my body will reflect this hehe

Running is a big one for me while gyms are closed. At the start of the first lockdown I was jogging a 5km (at a tortoise pace but still doing it!) so just to be able to do that length again would be good

My front splits I'm also hoping to get to the ground though a few inches away at the moment.

Strength wise I have goals but this will be once gyms open again yay!

Gonna try and set my alarm for 6.30 and walk through the local Park and start doing some squats - i think 50 is a reasonable daily target.. Although I might have to put a sign on the kettle to remind myself !

I too am in meetings all day and just sat down all day, at least when in the office I was walking to different meeting rooms across a large site.

You have managed really well without the gyms, its great to see people have taken up running as a substitute. Do you think you will continue to run once the gyms reopen?

Front splits... wow. I haven't done those since a teenager, my flexibility has gone awful since running.

My goal before was to smash 10k in under 45 mins as I reached my target of doing it under 50 mins but since having covid.. been really struggling with it so I'm back with my original goal of 10k in 50 mins again. I had to stop running due to injuries etc so I took up walking with a heavy rucksack I’m carrying 30 lbs and walk 6 miles 4-5 days a week !!

Taking it slow but sure currently, after an moment with the scales at the end of January. Downloaded a fat to fit app which I'm working through and making sure I go out for at least an hour's walk every day - coupled with cutting out the crop in my diet, I've lost around 8-10lbs in that time, and feel so much better about my general fitness levels.

You're committed to a good challenge, 6 miles of walking a day is a fair distance each day.

Those sort of challenges are equally mental as well as physical challenges, physically you will be capable of that commitment but its whether you let your brain distract you or make you feel like you don't want to go out.... that's another complication to factor in. Good luck with it

Today my best friend and I, decided to go out and run a marathon. Well we'll basically go out and see how far we get. We've made a pact that if we are still out at 4.30, we are getting a cab home.

Its very small compared with all your imoressive feats, but inertia, partially caused by depression, has meant that I have used every excuse in the book to avoid exercising.

Small changes, small changes. That has to be my mantra.

If you don't normally walk 10,000 steps a day then going straight into that will be a significant challenge in its self and something to feel proud of.

Getting outside for a stroll is one of the best things for you. Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself, just enjoy a walk and before long getting out for a walk becomes a habit and part of your routine.

I know that kind of environment, we too live somewhere similar as you either start or end a run on a hill.

Your challenge is great though, 18 miles a day is a fair distance. Do you have those cycling nappy shorts with the padded foof bit?

Absolutely agree, I didn't want to get up for a run this morning and I was freezing when we first went out but once we started running it was beautiful, fresh, and signs of a new season approaching.

Thanks Jo... we'll see how we get on, its probably going to be the hardest thing I have done but I want to try it.

Good luck with your target too, making a commitment to increase activity especially when raising a family is a juggling act between both parents and often results in solo activities but get everyone outdoors occasionally and that helps them as well as gives you some company. Good luck

My goal is to cycle to work and back (9 miles each way) and master those hills!

I’m nowhere near completing a steep hill yet. I live in a valley and if you’re not going downhill it’s likely you’re going up.

I know that kind of environment, we too live somewhere similar as you either start or end a run on a hill.

Your challenge is great though, 18 miles a day is a fair distance. Do you have those cycling nappy shorts with the padded foof bit?

Padded shorts are a definite must have regardless of looking stupid but my bike is pink so I got that covered anyhow

300kg squat

200kg bench

320kg deadlift

Rest of this year is pretty much a none starter now with having to rehab, just keeping in some sort of shape is now my goal.

Wow those are big numbers man sorry to hear about your injury hopefully you can get on track when rehab is done all the best...

It's a recurrence of an old one I did 4 years ago in competition.

Partial dislocation of 2 ribs, collapsed under a 275kg squat, landing tear in right shoulder and damaged ligaments in right ankle.

Each time it heals weaker so this could be the nail in the coffin for power lifting "

Unfortunately, the labral tear is a big issue for what you do ...especially if the biceps pulley is compromised.

As some will know I am a keen runner and in January I completed the virtual Spine Challenge, all 268 miles.

I have given myself time off during feb to rest, recover and consider my next challenge.

So today I have persuaded my boyfriend to run 100 miles in 48 hours with me

We start just under 3 weeks of training tomorrow and our challenge date is Friday 19th March from 8am.

Every 4 hours (day & night) we will set off to run 8.4 miles, probably give us a rest period of 2.5 hrs. We will repeat this 12 times in 48 hours.

We have lots of considerations to take into account and are both experienced runners, just not done something quite so challenging. Why are we doing this? Why not is my answer, I want to push myself mentally, emotionally as well as physically. Friends and family will hopefully be able to show support on route to encourage us to complete it.

What fitness goals or challenges have you set for yourself or have we inspired you to start a fitness journey. Whatever it is I would love to know.

You are definitely my fitness inspiration, fair play. So after last year I'm back to square one. So a tad frustrated but being stuck in bed had massive implications on fitness. So though my goals aren't massive mine are to get out and walk or dig my garden as often as I can. And do things slowly and not disheartened that I'm not back where I was yet.

Ive done multi day / ultra events. (Deca Ironman, ran LeJoG)

Just regular training. Nutrition. Emulation. For example run at 2-4 in the morning when the body is wanting to rest.

Nutrition.. high fat, low fibre. Your body will be burning 8-10k calories a day.

Never be disheartened with any kind of activity, as long as you enjoy then you will want to get out and do it again. Listen to your body.

Oh well done, they are difficult.

Always reminds me of a fitness class we both went to a few times and the instructor got us doing them and it was like being shouted at by a young dictator. I hated her in class but liked her after class.

Running is a big one for me while gyms are closed. At the start of the first lockdown I was jogging a 5km (at a tortoise pace but still doing it!) so just to be able to do that length again would be good

My front splits I'm also hoping to get to the ground though a few inches away at the moment.

Strength wise I have goals but this will be once gyms open again yay!

You have managed really well without the gyms, its great to see people have taken up running as a substitute. Do you think you will continue to run once the gyms reopen?

I too have been working from home for the past 12 months, I used it as an opportunity to give myself a better work/life balance and that has worked for me.

Good luck with your commitment to get outside for an hour a day, before long it becomes habit and then part of your routine. I hope you enjoy your activities

How is everyone getting on with your personal fitness activities and goals this month?

Hopefully you are on target to succeed and are injury free. Be great to hear your updates.

We have brought forward our challenge by a day, we start 8am on Thurs...this week. We have practised our route and have even got up at 3.15am for a run to experience a night time run whilst tired.

Our support team aka my kids are on board and will be fully briefed on our route and what they will possibly be required to do for example pick us up in the car if one of us gets injured.

We have planned our meals, clothes, and walking sections of the route, rest periods and contingency arrangements. We have 2 very small easy effort 2 mile runs on mon & tues, then a rest day on weds. We will be stretching lots, eating well, drinking plenty of fluids and getting good nights sleep this week.

The challenge to complete 100 miles in 48 hours is going to be a very hard but hopefully very rewarding.

We will update you all after the challenge finishes on Saturday at 8am.

Keep going with your fitness activities and have fun doing them.

Good luck with that sounds hard mentally and emotionally but physically possible if you are fit , 2 marathons a day for 2 days

....

My challenge fir last couple of years is to bench , squat and deadlift a full set of 10 on 100kg and also run 5k sub 20min. It’s a tough one as the running needs me at 80-85kg max. I got the weights just, but running only 21:13 so a long way to go

Are you carrying an injury? If so I am sorry to hear that. I am the most impatient person when injured.

At Xmas I took a nasty fall on a mountain and I feared never bring able to run again, thankfully I took my time and rebuilt my strength.

You are doing well though with both the weights and running. Its so hard to shave time off a run. Have you tried interval training, its great to give you strength and speed but its so difficult... makes me want to throw up

I like identifying areas to work on. This month for me I have had to reduce pace, and work on endurance which is psychological as well as physical for me.

I am resting my legs today and have just been sorting the meal prep for our lunches and dinner meals for the 48 hrs. I also made a traybake of flapjack to chunk up and nibble on for energy when we need it. Headtorches are charged and later I will get my kit ready. Our support team aka my kids are briefed and ready.

I am almost good to go.....

"Hello everyone

As some will know I am a keen runner and in January I completed the virtual Spine Challenge, all 268 miles.

I have given myself time off during feb to rest, recover and consider my next challenge.

So today I have persuaded my boyfriend to run 100 miles in 48 hours with me

We start just under 3 weeks of training tomorrow and our challenge date is Friday 19th March from 8am.

Every 4 hours (day & night) we will set off to run 8.4 miles, probably give us a rest period of 2.5 hrs. We will repeat this 12 times in 48 hours.

We have lots of considerations to take into account and are both experienced runners, just not done something quite so challenging. Why are we doing this? Why not is my answer, I want to push myself mentally, emotionally as well as physically. Friends and family will hopefully be able to show support on route to encourage us to complete it.

What fitness goals or challenges have you set for yourself or have we inspired you to start a fitness journey. Whatever it is I would love to know.

I am still struggling with 5km but consistent with 3 runs a week plus 6x HIIT/Strength sessions. Six weeks nonstop now! Very pleased to see definition in my arms and shoulders again.

I was due to start training for a half marathon at the end of Feb but it got postponed. I initially said I’d still do the training but I’m lazy and so I didn’t.

I’m just doing gentle runs and will pick it up over the next two weeks as a gentle pre season before football starts back up in April

Football training will definitely help as interval training for strength and speed. Keep with the running

Our challenge update:

We achieved 82 miles of the 100 miles. We stopped at 1.30am at a point of absolute tiredness and rather a lot of pain and discomfort.

We have both learned so much from this experience and have loved doing the challenge together. Now to recover...
