Den of Iniquity

Cedes thread reminded me a bit of my situation .

I've lived in my home town virtually all my life but due to recent changes and a lot of shit once I've saved enough I will moving away from here onto pastures new .

But my question is ... Has anybody else lived in a particular place most of their lives decided to relocate somewhere completely different, did you regret it , and how was it settling in a new strange place . Thankyou xx

Hey Grumps. I’ve moved so many times and to so many strange places around the world where I haven’t known anyone. Yes, it’s hard but also exhilarating. My next move will be in summer- new job, new town, new life. It’s difficult but necessary, sort of the same for you I’m guessing. It’ll be fine

I've been all over the country, I'm the black sheep of the family. Both my sisters live within 5 minutes of my dad.

I want to see places, not stick to one county

Gapping Fanny

Never had a home town, moved around as a child up until we moved here 20 years ago for work.

All of our close friends live around the country, with some living in other countries.

I can see it being daunting if you have (childhood/work) friends, family or other dependencies, but these days with the ease of travel and communication its not that hard to live away from where you work or your friends/family.

The most daunting thing is making sure where you move to is a decent area, which can be hard if you don’t know the area.

Northampton Somewhere

Yes, I left my home town which in Suffolk to move here when I was 24 but I wasn't single. It was something we had to do to improve our futures, not for a negative reason.

It's not something I've ever regretted as there's not many job opportunities that way for our children. I've got a great circle of friends and being in the middle of the country makes everywhere a little more accessible. I suppose the only thing I truly miss is not having the seaside on my doorstep.

I moved away from here when I was nineteen and then down south when I was 24, spent 16 years In Essex before moving back, was pretty daunting moving somewhere new where I knew noone and had no family near but it was ok and I settled quite quickly

Moved from Loondon to Lpool to go to college, and never went back. 20 idd years later I moved 20 miles down the coast just before lockdown and love it.

I'd say do your research and go for it.

You can always move again if it doesn't work out.

Maybe but I’ve lived here all my life and it’s way too manic for me these days. I rarely go into the centre of town now and stick to quiet places for drinks or whatever, I can do that in soooo many other places with what I feel would be a better lifestyle.

Apart from a while as a baby I have lived in my town for my whole life. My direct family are all within 5 miles. I had the chance to move abroad with my mum when I was 12 but stayed with my dad.

After meeting T on here, he moved in with us from the next county (@ 1 hour away) but goes back every day as his business is based at his family home.

Once we’re not tied here for education reasons we will look at moving perhaps half way. Will probably end up paying more for a smaller house though

Not from the Uk moved here as a teen. Moved around a lot. Quite like this part of the world for the moment but miss the call of the sea. I have got one move left I reckon in the UK before I retire so perhaps the Cotswolds next. Then retire home to listen to the sea and do nothing.

It's easier to move away from home when you have no family ties. That was where I was (unfortunately) when I was in my twenties.

You have to make more of an effort when you're new somewhere, to make friends etc. It wasn't easy because I was quite shy so had to take myself out of my comfort zone!

When you've made that decision to move away, and it's a big one, you kind of disattach yourself from the area. Hope you find what/where you're looking for

South Wales

I’ve moved slightly (from near SpCardiff to near to Swansea).

At the moment I am tied by family roots, but when my kids are older and my mum passes away, I hope to be able to move.

Although no idea where. I like West Wales and I love Cornwall, but depends on the cost of living.

Spent about 12 years living no where near home, wouldnt say i hated it, because it wasnt to bad and i could easily nip home on the weekends when i could. Spent a year and a bit in German, hated that though.

But for me, theres nothing better then hearing a geordie accent and kmowing im home, where people can actually understand what i say haha.

"Lived in inner city Birmingham moved out to Worcester 16 years ago and wild horses couldn't drag us back there ever.

Its bad enough working there from time to time but we couldn't live there again."

I like the city centre but I dont know all that much about the living areas , conditions of Birmingham so I'll take your word for it

"I lived in Bognor Regis most of my life and moved to Wales a few years ago and I prefer it here, Can't stand being in a noisy town now at all.

Now you see that's my quandary, a quiet village somewhere is appealing, but the convenience of a town for shopping transport etc is important, so it's a big decision "

I'm only a 10 minute drive from Swansea Town and there's shops local to me and yet I'm surrounded by lots of farmland. It's perfect, couldn't live miles away from everything.

Lived in my hometown for over 30 years. Went to juniors and senior school 5 mins from my parent's house. Got a job at a SEN school next to my senior school. Worked there for 13 years.

Didn't drive. Lived at home. Then I met my boyfriend at age 32 and within a year had moved out, learnt to drive, left my job and hometown to move to Oxford. Did agency work in different schools.

Now we are living in Gran Canaria, moved here during COVID-19, Brexit and Christmas! Opening a club over here which we are getting ready at the moment. Lots of work and DIY and grafting but it's worth it because I thought my life was mapped out one way and it completely changed.

We've travelled all over the place, Argentina, Sweden, Corfu, Florence, Barcelona, Monaco. And I never thought I would do any of that stuff. I'm very lucky

But for me, theres nothing better then hearing a geordie accent and kmowing im home, where people can actually understand what i say haha. "

Totally valid point yes

a quandary, could you change my mind?

The move was a big one for me. Not as big as some. As they almost speak the same language here as where I moved from (but now even after 15 years I do ask what something means)

I did a pro's and con's they were basically equal but with stay on a better foot.

I did move, the deciding factor was "regret" I knew I would have regretted if i hadn't moved much more. And I still feel the same.

Peeks and troughs in the new area, but that is life.

I have another move coming up too.

I've lived in Southampton all my life in lots of the different parts of it, as it ticks all of my boxes I've no intention of moving, but I like to travel a couple of times a month to different places.

My retirement plans are eventually to move abroad and tour further afield

As a young proud northerner I lived and worked in London for many years didn't regret it one bit.

It is initially daunting leaving your hometown but you soon make new friends with the right attitude.

I'm moving again permanently soon a bit further north my hometown will always be just that. I can find happiness wherever I lay my hat. Best of luck OP.

Left my hometown in Sweden when I was 22, moved to England for love(Met Od and he swept me off my feet). We then moved about 80 miles away from his hometown(Od got a new job so we had to relocate)and have been settled here ever since. This is home but I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing my friends and family and being close to them. I don’t miss a place, but I miss the people. But the beauty of the world we live in(or pre covid at least) they are only a short plane journey/drive away.

Good luck with your move!! Freya x

I emigrated over 10,000 miles away to a country I'd never been to before, no job, nowhere to live and didn't know anyone...

It was the biggest adventure I've ever undertook and had circumstances not been what they were I'd still be living in Perth Australia now,I spent 10yrs there and I'm still a perminent resident.

I'm now living in the same village I grew up in, the people I see and old friends never moved out and haven't changed or done anything different with their lives. I often hear them whinge that they should've done this or had the opportunity to do that...

I say no matter where you go or what you do in life get out there and live it, we're a longtime dead and this ain't a rehearsal

I couldn't stay at home as my feet were too inchy, lived in Newcastle, Fleet, Chorley, Whilsmlow, Knaresborough and Kuala Lumper, Shah Alam.

Although I'm quite happy in the UK I don'y mind moving within the UK again, change is good, keepts the mind fresh.

I don't have a home town as such, I've lost count of the times I've moved but I was in one city for a very long time whilst the children were growing up and I moved nearly two years ago (three times since then). I missed it dreadfully, tried hard to go back but it wasn't feasible.

I realised recently that it was familiarity I miss, not the place or the friends still there and I have a feeling it will always be like that.

I wish you well, I like moving and discovering new places and I hope you enjoy your new life.

"I can't offer you any advice as I haven't moved away from my hometown. The furthest I moved was 10 miles away. I now live 5 miles away.

We do wish you well in your move and hope you will find somewhere to settle and you can call your happy home."

Thankyou I appreciate that

I have moved around this country and Europe for work being the main reason.

I can only say for me it has given me additional motivation to make a success of the relocation.

Also you only get one life if you make the most of it, one life is all you need.

There are incredible places and inspirational people beyond the horizon, I promise you if you make the effort the rewards are there

Bedfordshire

2 weeks away from doing a hop skip and jump to another county, albeit a neighbouring one, but still 30+ miles away. I am more scared than excited but the scariness is exciting me.... I'll be in my own but have a couple of friends there and also joined Faceache groups in that area to set the groundwork for when we are set free.... this has been 8 years in the planning

York

I moved away from the place I grew up for work back in 2013, I was sad leaving my friends and family at the time but it's only 30 miles and I made new friends and a life in York after a while. I rarely ever go back to my hometown now, there's nothing for me there other than nostalgia for my younger days.
