Why is it that whenever they create strong female characters they mostly fall into two camps:
1. The smart, highly educated, confident type who is the best lawyer/doctor/politician/detective in the country at age 25, or
2. The strong, tenacious, determined single mother who is just trying to keep her family's head above water. Never seems to need sleep and usually works two jobs, one of which is as a waitress.
I know of some shows and movies that break that stereotype, but I'd love to get some recommendations on some stuff featuring more "normal" woman that have "normal" jobs but also come across smart and empowered.
I'll start us off with Parks and Rec, Broad City, Good Girls. |

I’m not sure that they really do write ‘normal women’ in ‘normal jobs’ parts...
Fleabag maybe?
I think that looking at female driven products, written by and directed by women would be good though.
Personally I love strong female characters but they tend to be within sci-fi or fantasy productions, worlds away from ‘normal’ |

Watch the first wonder woman movie a few weeks ago and though how they ruined a strong female character, portrayed her a a bit thick and useless. Didn't enjoy it. |

Fleabag is a great one!
And you're right, we need more female-driven media for sure! It's always so obvious when a female character has been written by a man. For example The Queen's Gambit (which I thought was amazing) has a scene where the lead starts her period for the first time and gasps out in pain at the exact moment the blood starts coming out. I rolled my eyes so hard... |

"Widows
Buffy the vampire slayer
Charlies angels 2019"
I recently rewatched Buffy.
I was shocked at the number of misogynistic quips there were. One example is when she calls herself a slut for wearing a short dress. Or when Xander is shamed for "screaming like a girl" when they get attacked by vampires. Buffy is always going to have a special place in my heart but it has aged really badly. |

"Community is really good. There's also a show that was on Prime for a bit called Brain Dead I think?
Ohhh and on Netflix - Russian Doll. I'll have a think about a few more."
Love Community
Russian Doll... Meh. I'm a web developer and the way they showed her at work really annoyed me. Typical Matrix-style code and being able to fix bugs within a millisecond with some fast typing. But I guess that's my own pet peeve lol. |
