"I'd be trying to get it back to whoever has lost it
Would you really in reality it probably came from a drug dealer "
I used to work in a toy shop as a Saturday job and would walk to the bosses car with £20k in McDonald's bags all in cash with the days takings close to Christmas.
If that bag got lost then the shop would have suffered greatly and probably folded with people losing jobs etc.
I couldn't live with that on my conscience so would try to return it and would like to think others would do the same if it was me who lost it.
Yes I am actually that honest even if I thought I needed it, the person who lost it could need it a lot more. |

The boss should of been insured for that and if I lost it, it wouldn't be coming back. |

I would hand into the Police - if no one claimed it then I could after a certain amount of time - (if it was dodgy then they wouldn’t go and ask for it back would they?!) - then I’d spend it, guilt free!! |

Count it, take pictures, get a lawyer to verify the amount and where I found it.
Hand it over to the police then follow up after the period of time where it can be given to me if not claimed.
Certainly wouldn't keep it.
But I'm the type of guy if I saw a a tenner on the floor I would be looking around to see if someone was looking for it. |

I would do this too.

I’d hand it in, I imagine that amount wouldn’t be bagged honestly. What if someone was watching me and I took it, a drug gang might be after me!
I’d go to the police and hope no one has claimed it and it all comes back to me.
I’d then buy a plot of land and create a campsite |

If I could not identify who 'lost' the money from the container or whatever. I'd take it to the police station. I believe it's mine in 3 months in anycase.
If I found out before hand that it's not mine in 3 months i'd just keep it.
If I could identify who it belonged to, i'd take it straight back to them. |

Funny how the amount would determine my level of honesty. If I took a quick glance around and no one is there then that tenner is mine. Not worth a walk to the police station for a tenner.
Or come to think of it, i'd put it in a charity box. That would stop me thinking about some old dolly dropping it. |

Many years ago, I found a platic bag in a toilet at Gatwick Airport
In it was over £1,000
I figured it was probably somebody's holiday spends, so I handed it in
If, however, I found a bag of cash lying about or deliberately hidden, I'd probably keep it and keep it quiet
As others have suggested, it's more than likely ill gotten gains |

A few years ago, I noticed a handbag left in a shopping trolley as I was leaving my leaving a local supermarket. Over £800 cash inside.
Informed the lady at the front counter, and left my contact details, but held onto the bag. Managed to get hold of the owner, who was so relieved to have her bag and all its contents retuned, she'd only withdrawn the cash from the post office that very morning to get Christmas gifts for her grandchildren.
Although I could have done with that amount of money myself, especially at that time of year, I'd say it definitely felt better to hand it back to the lady who'd lost it.
As for the bag of cash the op mentioned, if anyone finds this please return it to me asap. You'll feel so much better for it |

Hand it it. It’s not mine. If I kept it I would be guilty of theft and I am not a thief.
It’s amazing how many presume that it would be illegitimate or criminal money, just because it’s a large amount of cash.
It’s still not yours, hand it in. |

I'd hand it in - if it goes unclaimed then I would get it anyway. It surprises me that so many decry the fact that it'd be illegally-gotten money from criminals, yet would take it and keep it themselves! |

Yes i would hand it in. it happened to me once. I found a purse it had a ladys credit cards and £800. I got her number from a card in there. I telephoned her. She collected it and didnt even say thank you. ( Further to my comments of being intimidated ) |

Agreed, you also have to think that if its legitimate the amount of money is not a factor, you don't know what the money is for.
If criminal and you keep it conssider that money is profit from lives ruined.
It’s still not yours, hand it in."

No doubt whatsoever that I'd hand it in - keeping it under the assumption that "that amount of money it must be criminal" is just as criminal as the act that *might* (but is not known for sure) have resulted in it in the first place in my mind.
Even assuming it was from criminal activity - it could be from a burglary or bank robbery for example, and handing it in could/would not only see the money returned to it's rightful owners, but also potentially help identify the perpetrators and see them bought to justice. |

Exactly if it wasn't I would feel guilty and I wouldn't my want to keep it, but gangsters I'm keeping it and putting it to better use than them. |

But you don't know that for sure - it could have been a shops daily takings (as one example given above) or taken from a burglary or the results of a bank robbery or any number of other things - keeping the money is just as much theft as any possible crime that may have been committed to get it, maybe not legally so, but certainly morally.
And as I said further up, IF it was the proceeds of crime - by keeping it you're potentially withholding evidence that could have been used to identify the perpetrators and allowing them to carry on with whatever criminal activity - which would you rather? The criminals locked up or allow them to remain free and possibly carrying on causing misery? |

Hand it in.
If it's legitimate money, then someone will be missing that badly.
If it's hooky, then the sort of people who have 50K in cash to lose, would be the sort of people you don't want asking you about how it was just resting in your account.

So you'd rather line your own pockets and see others suffer? Do you not think that could be seen as incredibly selfish? Let alone morally wrong?
I very much suspect though that if the situation were to actually arise, rather than being a hypothetical one, that many here who've said they'd keep it would actually hand it in.

But you don't *know* it's from criminal activity so you don't *know* who has suffered from you keeping it.
What if it was the takings from a shop and the loss of that money meant the shop had to close and the staff were all laid off? What if it was the gains from a burglary from a house and could be returned to the owners?
Who's suffering then?
What if you handing that money in resulted in the police being able to identify a drugs ring and bring it to justice?
Sorry but for me there is only one right answer to this one and any notion of keeping the money is both selfish and morally, if not criminally, wrong. |

This is a real dilemma for me. I always given any money I pick up and can't return to the first homeless person I see.... However that amount of money would really change my life, at a bad time.....
I like to think I'd still give at least some to the homeless, assuming the police returned it owner unknown... But no Idea how much. |
