Just East of Wakefield

Beryl Burton

25 years of dominance on the domestic time-trial scene

7 World titles (2 track, 5 road)

72 National titles

Possibly (still??) the only woman to break a mans endurance record in 1967

Riding 277+ miles in 12 hours

No man broke that record for 2 years!

No woman broke it for 50 years!!

!

My nan’s spare room.

So difficult.

Sir Stanley Matthews has to be in with a shout, a gentleman and visionary who had longevity.

I think Martina Navaratalova was incredible and has been a role model for LGBT.

Why Bradman out of curiosity? The stats don't lie but watching Tendulkar bat in front of an Indian crowd was something else

Travelling

I’d say Michael Jordan, greatest of all time in basketball and also played baseball at a good level which has the smallest percentage of any sport where people turn pro

Now that's difficult and very subjective. I think some of the greatest achievers are athletes that compete in multi disciplines but from a personality and an skill set point of view I like Guy Martin as he is still the same person he was 15-20 years ago despite his achievements and celibrity status.

I'm Australian and I have family from his part of Australia

I'm not claiming it's factual, at all. Just my soft spot.

With respect to all the greats mentioned here I think Ali is still The Greatest.

As well as being probably the greatest boxer of all time (certainly top 3) he had an impact on politics and wider society that no other sport person has come close to.

He arguably invented the idea of a modern sporting celebrity and revolutionised his sport as a business.

He was also a global icon, one of the few people who would be recognised and adored in every corner of the world.

Gareth Edwards... Even new Zealanders voted him the greatest rugby player ever so that's saying something

Also Tom Brady has a decent argument... Absolute winner

Greatest is not about only winning, it has to be done with style as well

Going by stats alone it has to be Don Bradman, no ones come close to him, I can’t think of anyone who has dominated their sport like he did.

But haile gebreselasse takes the number one spot. Not only a fantastic athlete an amazing person who has done so much more than just being an amazing runner.

Jess Ennis Hill

As women go is pretty much to being a perfect athlete and a great person.
