Brilliant description I always try and describe why I hate that singing loads of notes but none of them in tune... Melisma apparently... But carpet bombing is much better |

She said “I have perfect pitch”....yeah, right!
I find Florence and the Machine a tough listen too.
The thing is, there’s technically brilliant singers with amazing voices who leave me stone cold, and much more limited singers who move me.

Carol king - You make me feel is her song and heresy but I’d edge her version over aretha - just.
Mariah has an incredible range of five octaves but, it’s what you do with such a gift. Technically though her range puts her voice in the top 1%

Billie Holiday conversely had a vocal range which only spanned a ninth. that's just over one octave. i'd say she dominated a song far more that mariah carey myself. |

So. Someone's ability to sing isn't an opinion. Either they have the ability to sing (in key, in time, correct pitch and use of voice as an instrument etc)
How you respond to someone's voice is a totally different thing. Someone can sing and you have an opinion about their voice... You might not like it but it doesn't mean they can't sing.
Some of the artists mentioned have amazing voices, their skill and talent is there. But you might not like it.
(Also I feel for pop artists. A lot of them can sing and would be awesome if they could stand still and sing but pop having to be a 'spectacle' means they can hardly breathe let alone sing. |

Agreed neither have great voices (and I've seen Madness 50+ times live) but it comes back to how they perform and the quality of the songs they are singing as much as anything - you could add both Ian Dury and Weller to that list too....yet if ever there were a gig featuring Madness, Blur, Ian Dury and Weller (either in The Jam, The Style Council or solo) I'd be front of the queue for tickets |
