What are people's _iews on the welsh lads refusing to sing the national anthem for team GB in the football?

disrespectful

like it or not 'God Save the Queen' is the national anthem of England AND Great Britain.

If they dont want to sing the national anthem of the country they have been chosen to represent then dont accept the invitation

I think its fair, speaking as a Welshman. I think there ought to be a British National Anthem that is inclusive for the Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and English, infact didnt it used to be Rule Brittania?

I have nothing against God Save the Queen and I would sing it happily if it was the British National Anthem and the English had their own anthem, such as Jerusalam but being as the English sing it as their National Anthem and then expect the rest of to sing it as the British anthem it just doesnt sit right.

But thats just my opinion.

Couldn't agree more and after all they have a Prince of Wales who will one day become King, will they not then sing God Save the King?

On a site where people repeatedly talk about preferences and choice - surely it is everyones' choice whether they sing the national anthem. Up until recently there have been several instances of english players not singing it

I don't know if there is a reason why they didn't sing to it.....but, if they are not singing the National Anthem because they don't believe in it, then maybe they shouldn't be competing for GB in the Olympics.

Exactly, they have chosen to represent GB so should sing the national anthem.

Just find it disrespectful of them to refuse to sing it.

i hate that to. Everyone says what an honour it is to represent your country. If its that big an onour then respect your country.

In the case of the Olympics the country you are representing is Great Britain

No we have had anthems for many many many years. Before Land of our Fathers we had Bread of Heaven, and the Scottish national anthem before Flower of Scotland was Scotland the Brave.

We forget that Britain is made up of 4 nations who all have their own identity but combined are all willing to act as one, its just unfortunate that the world often sees England as being the same as Britain.

BTW I am not anti English, I am pro British and proud to be Welsh, or as my Mum often says, British by birth, Welsh by the grace of God.

i stand corrected on that point then

i'm not anti anything either but we havent got a seperate anthem and so people representing Team GB need to recognise that, man up, and just sing the bloody song!!!!

Its not that easy, it means singing the national anthem of not only Britain but England.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and the English national anthem was God Save the Queen but the British National Anthem was Land Of Our Fathers, in Welsh, the English would have a full cob on and be constantly complaing about having sing it. So why should we sing God Save the Queen? We get annoyed when Prince Charles (The Prince of Wales) doesnt sing the Welsh National Anthem but does sing GSTQ.

At the end of the day its just a song, and singing it doesnt give us any special super powers to help win the game.

In the 84 Olympics Daley Thompson hit the headlines by whistling during the playing of the national anthem when receiving his Gold medal…….

He also made a bit of an arse of the Olympic-sprit openly wearing a series of T-shirts with outrageous comments, including one that made insinuations about US sprinter Carl Lewis' sexuality.....

So I guess a few guys not singing along with the GB national anthem ain’t all that bad…

I would only sing god save the queen if her majesty was present. I feel that the British national anthem has become the English national anthem and as I am not English I do not wish to sing god save the queen. At the commonwealth games england sing Jerusalem due to all the other nations putting pressure on england as all commonwealth country's could use god save the queen but don't as they had the creativity to get an identity.

"I think its fair, speaking as a Welshman.

But thats just my opinion."

As and English woman with a Welsh partner, living in Wales, I couldn't agree more. It is regarded as the English national anthem rightly or wrongly. I have to say though, perhaps refusing to sing it on the pitch isn't the best way about it.

There was a Thread earlier about The National Anthem ...

Now I am but a simple soul so maybe I have missed something.

But.

Its the National Anthem for all 5 countries that make up the United Kingdom. Team GB is therefore a slight misnomer but 'Great Britain' is recognised internationally as being the same thing. So the Anthem is entirely appropriate for the Olympics.

Now whether someone chooses to sing it or not is their choice entirely. As it is mine to think they are being disrespectful.

As to seperate Anthems for each Nation of the United Kingdom I can't see the problem as they exist and it was demonstrated wonderfully at the Opening Ceremony by the childrens choirs.

In the case of the Olympics the country you are representing is Great BritainNo it is not, it is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - You have just excluded a chunk of the population of the country. You do have to remember though that God Save the King/Queen is a Scottish-bashing song! "

so why are they listed as Great Britain on the line up then?

That used to be the case, however nowadays you watch them and there are only a couple that don't sing, and i think the same about them as these welsh muppets! "

That's not quite true either. Last time I saw England play there were quite a few that either chose not to sing or didn't know the words to their own national anthem.

Do you mean 4 countries, which was the count last time I checked. Also, Jerusalem is not the English national anthem officially (England doesn't have one), but perhaps it should be. It would go part of the way to addressing this - leaving God Save the Queen as the anthem on Britain and Northern Ireland as it was intended.

Well I for one hope everyone will be proud to hear the National anthem celebrating the achievement of any member of team GB during a medal ceremony and hope there’s not a strange twist of irony to this debate where members and supporters of Team GB only get to hear the National anthem at the beginning of an Olympic soccer match….!.
