There is a story today about footballers purchasing items on the "Dark Web".

I've never come across this and Google doesn't really help. Is it like bitcoin and the Masons, only those in the know get to know?

You can only access most sites on the dark web through an invite.

Unless you are a hacker.

I'm sure there are but the majority of us have no idea of how to access the dark web so will never get the opportunity to find out.

Why would you want to i guess is the real Q.. What activity would you feel you need to conceal?

The podcasts tell you how to and follow users experiences... Oh there was even a radio 4 programme a few years ago!

Interesting in an intriguing way, but way beyond my level of Internet searching lol

‘Dark’ is the right word for it. I was told in my old job that the internet you use every day, however vast and infinite you feel it is when you’re browsing - it’s just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. The dark web is terrifying and full of predators.

You need TOR to get on, I know that much.

Tor Browser.

First find a semi reputable link directory.

Never click a blind link.

Unless you know where the shady shit is it’s unlikely you will stumble across it that way.

I have been on the market places to see what they have for sale. Wasn’t that shocked just drugs and guns.

There are plenty of deep web exploration videos on YouTube, some are quite interesting. Most of the stuff there seems to be dull or fake, but yes you can also find disturbing/illegal content. Most people I know who use it do so for purchasing substances with bitcoin. As others state, you need to use Tor client to access.

You can only view The Dark Web by using Tor, usual search engines won't gain access.

My son is quite a whizz kid with computers.

He went on there. They tracked him back. And they shut our router down.

We had to contact our internet provider by mobile phone to have the router reactivated.

So be careful folks.

This isn’t true and your son can’t be much of a wizz Kidd as he got “caught”.

You don’t get your IP address blocked for going on there.

You also go via a diff IP address so this story is fabricated

Tor is a browser which allows anonymous and untraceable web browsing, unlike using Google where no matter what you do you'll always be a paper trail...

The term "dark web" is thrown about like it's some sinister thing. There are three basic terms for accessibility of "websites" or "webservices".

1: Surface Web - This is the part of websites/webservices that are indexed by search engines and you can easily access with no login or authentication. Estimated to be 1 out of every 10,000+ sites/services/pages that are accessible throughout the internet.

2: Deep Web - This is *any* page/site/service/information that requires you to authenticate in some way. That includes most of fab, Facebook, your bank, or anything you have a username and password for or gives some form of personalisation.

3: Dark Web - *ANY* site/service/information that is not indexed or linked to. You need to know exactly what to type to access it or use specific software. This includes my CCTV system where you would need to know the exact IP and Port before even getting to the user authentication part.

TOR is *NOT* the "dark web". It is a service that is designed to get past things like the Chinese government firewall. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and even the BBC have *OFFICIAL* Tor URLS so they can be accessed openly in countries that block the Surface Web versions! Yes it can access services that are inaccessible using the general web protocols, yes some of those are illegal and immoral, that is the human condition of using what is available. Drug dealers use prepaid mobiles and emojis, that doesn't mean these things are created to be used by drug dealers.

The "dark web" is no different to surfing the Surface Web with an incompatible or out if date browser that does not understand current technology!

I thought the deep web was any unindexed site that you'd use TOR for, and 'dark web' is just a moniker given to it due to the most well known content.

Facebook is hardly the deep web, is it.

This sounds like utter tosh. If it is true, then your son is hardly a whizz kid, sounds quite the opposite.

Any information that you need any form of credentials to access is "deep" in other words it's not directly on the surface. Anything that is either intentionally hidden, or "by design" is not discoverable; is "dark".

This is one of the better YouTube clips on the topic.

From what I've read and heard over the years, the dark Web is only something which is encrypted from end to end so nobody can eavesdrop. In that respect WhatsApp and credit card payments are part of the dark Web.

The dark Web is made out to be sinister in and of itself. Some dark Web activity is perfectly legitimate. Interest should focus more on what people do than than what technology they use.

Quite. It has perfectly legitimate uses but naturally the obfuscated nature of it has made it a go-to for activities you wouldn't want authorities to observe. TOR itself was developed by the US navy I think, for anonymity reasons.

"As intriguing as it sounds what do you actually do on the dark web ? "

As stated before, most people I know who use it do so to buy substances on marketplaces. It's easier than standing in a street corner waiting for a guy to turn up in a car, vendors are peer reviewed like eBay/Amazon, and it's posted to your house. If certain things were decriminalised folks wouldn't have to. (I don't use ftr, I'm just aware).

There are also services on their for hitmen, general crime etc, and the really disturbing stuff like torture/cp.

Rolling Stone magazine had a great long read two part article about Silk Road a few years back, well worth a read. It's a real Breaking Bad story, Lars Ulbrecht went from a regular uni kid to running the world's largest drugs market and ordering hits on his rivals. I expect there'll be a film made at some point as it's an incredible wtf story.
