"Breakfast before 12
Lunch before 5
Dinner after 5 x
So where does brunch fit into your equation "
Brunch is just a stupid word for lunch for those that are above eating breakfast
I might start calling my supper coffee and eating my dinner out of a cup x |

Tea is mid afternoon, a selection of delicate cakes and sandwiches with no crusts |

We northerners have dinner ladies (God knows what you call a male dinner lady?!) and yes, we'd ask our kids about their dinner at school.
(I believe for reasons of equality, councils do advertise for breaktime SUPERVISORS here too, but no-one actually calls them that!) |

Those calling an evening meal tea its actually called high tea (around 6) whereas after tea (or low tea) is 3/4 ish
So named after the tables they were eaten at ... afternoon tea with finger food and tea (beverage) was served on low tables/picnic tables around comfy chairs whereas high tea was sitting around a table and a meal.
Hope this clarifies somewhat ... ![](/icons/s/cool.gif) |

Yes! Supper is a meal before bedtime ... most used for children and after nights out but also a give away if a person went to boarding school as they used to have supper then freetime before bed |

I'd say dinner is the hot cooked meal, so either
Breakfast - dinner - tea
or
Breakfast - lunch - dinner.
In the week I might have a sandwich for lunch while I'm out for work then cook dinner in the evening. On a Sunday, it'd more likely be Sunday dinner around 1pm then a light meal in the evening. |

"But there are dinner ladies.
There was even a program about them.
So on this basis, surely dinner time is for dinner? "
never thought of it like this - it was called school dinners in primary-
but still lunch in the middle of the day and dinner for an evening meal here, tea is a drink and supper would be a pre bedtime snack |

isnt brunch for people who combine the 2 meals together - too late and substantial to just be breakfast, too early and probably the first meal of the day to be called lunch (and probs not a full daytime menu to choose from) |

Dinner. Tea is a drink. You have tea parties in the afternoon with tea ... the drink. And you have dinner parties in the evening.
There's literally no real debate here. Saying tea is a massive mis-use of the language ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Isn't it strange that we all call the same thing something different, even though we speak the same language and it's not an accent thing.
Fascinating...... |
