Hey all I'm heading to port Talbot next week (don't worry it's work related so it is allowed!).

I'm walking alot now due to the lockdown and thought I could go for a walk around port Talbot area.

Does anyone know of any good places? X

Some nice walks in the hills either side of cwmafan, and afan forest park is good for walking and cycling.

Beach is ok too I think but have never been there. To be honest don’t think either of us have ever been to port Talbot itself.

Not sure on what the rules surrounding driving to exercise will be next week, or even if any of these places will be technically open or accesible.

World being normal our recommendation would be the Afan forest park, can’t speak to the legalities and moralities of it at the moment though.

As a former resident, there are a few

The beach is a good start. If Cafe Remos are doing takeaway drinks then that's a good place to go. The promenade is about a mile and half long

There are three mountains the other side of the motorway and all are accessible for walking

A little further north is Afan Argoed with loads of walking routes. I know that people have been going there to exercise so you should be ok

Aberavon beach is lovely .I think tho from what I’ve read restrictions are still going to be in place for atleast another 3 weeks .Travelling further afield might not be possible otherwise I would have definitely recommended the gower peninsula which is in Swansea but is gorgeous and well worth the 20mins by car.

There are lots of signposted cycle routes if you have a bicycle?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes it's a tricky one with the covid situation but I am travelling for work not to exercise and just doing some exercise there during daylight. It's a tricky situation. I want to go somewhere nice and open due to the covid rules.

But hopefully it will be alright to go on one of these walks, I can have a look over the weekend and see if they're suitable. The same walk around my village is getting a tad boring now!lol. X

the walk up the ffwrd wyllt valley along the bryn goetre cycleway from goytre to bryn. get a bus back down from bryn. you could take a left halfway along the way to a place called the blue pool above maestge/bryn in the forest. or just get to the top of nant cwn garn which overlooks the whole area including from gower to porthcawl and the channel with views over to england

It sounds like most of the places you mentioned are gibberish but think that's the Welsh language....haha.

Thanks for the in depth details. I wouldn't want to risk getting a bus with the current situation though.

Thanks again.

you may struggle for a nice walk in port talbot then. remember in wales you are not allowed to drive to a place of exercise. exercise must start at the door of your house and finsh there, unless you catch a bus which will be virtually empty on that route as it's so rural.

Might be an idea to not say that in PT if you want get out alive .

I love the place, but it’s tasty .

There are hills overlooking the town, as WaH said. There must be paths to get up on them. Houses in the town sit on the slopes, so I would have thought walking to them was possible.

it is .... i've done it for decades

it's awash with iron age hill forts, settlements and standing stones etc.

but then that area was always the traditional power base of wales so it's steeped in history if you can look past the industrial devestation.

The one closest to the town centre is very easy to get to. You can park in the multi storey and be on the mountain in 10 minutes from there

PT certainly punches above its weight in the arts.

WaH - music, vinyl, politics, culture, history, money. If you were a woman, I think I could fall in love with you .

Haha Northampton has some lovely areas in the countryside. The town itself should be avoided though. Haha

Haha I'm a smart Englishman and know not to shoot your mouth off in Wales.

I was speaking to a Welshman today about the 6nations and love the good hearted banter we have between England and Wales.

did they move the banksy or has it been tagged over? it's worth alook if it's still in one piece on the garage there.

between dyffryn road and caradog street in taibach

It was bought and moved to a ‘gallery’ where the police station used to be but has recently been moved out of the town by the bloke that bought it

Ha - it’ll be fine. Tbf, it wouldn’t be because of being English - they’ll have a rumble with anyone!

I like the place though - there’s a mad spirit there, and and is a place of real contrasts. Beauty and industry.

Make it up those hills - the views are really great.

The Banksy is gone now though, I believe.

Apparently the council aren’t keen on chipping in to keep it in the town so it might head for Essex instead
