My Ex-Mrs had this fukn thing

It drove me nuts.

Constant flapping of her feet in bed and legs moving when I tried to sleep

Exercise is key, tire those leg muscles out

I have a variation of this, but linked to my Osteoarthritic knees, when pain kicks in at intervals throughout sleeping, and causes the legs to jerk and move involuntarily, thus creating more pain and waking new up. Some times it can reach to my feet, contorting them outside of my control.

I seldom get a full night's sleep.

Put your feet and lower legs under the coldest shower you can stand and wait for it to tingle due to the cold.

That should settle them for a while and help you drop off to sleep.

Yes..I suppose in the grand scheme of things they could be.

But, still things like this can get one down.

I had a recurring back pain and it made me so miserable. It was relentless..it kind of took over.

Thankfully it eased off!

I'm at Stage 4 (severe) in both knees, both hands and wrists. But I saw a consultant surgeon on Wednesday, at my local BUPA hospital which is doing a lot of the routine surgical Operations which the NHS can't do due to lack of normal capacity. I'm having a new knee joint in October / November.

I get this. Its horrendous at times and the aching and cramping and last for hours. I've also had it in my arms. I've tried the heat rubs. Sometimes they help but not for long at all. Other times wrapping my legs tightly in a warm blanket under the duvet can help, other times nothing does..and although mostly at night it can happen in the car or cinema..

Great advice. It’s like that mint source shower gel, multiply it by an amount greater than 100 and then you’re half way there

Mine was first diagnosed 11 years ago, when I was 54; that was in my knees. It only reached stage 4, 18 months ago.

But the right hand was only first diagnosed 2 years ago, but is already at Stage 4. The left hand developed sometime from February 2019 to August last year when I was on an Osteoarthritis Pain Relief Drug Trial, which masked all O/A pains. That hand is now at Stage 4 too.

Current pain meds work 50% in my knees but nowhere else.

I’ve suffered with this since my teens, my sister and my father also therefore I think a generic link.

I have watched programmes on it and they believe it’s neurological rather than physical.

A lot of people & GPs wrongly diagnose it though and connect it with cramps etc

For me I can feel it building, I know it’s going to start and I plan lol

Being on a plane is the worst when it starts!!

Try going to bed earlier as it does happen more when you’re tired... for me the easiest cure is to have an orgasm! It gets the blood pumping quickly, if you can sleep straight after a play then you should get some decent sleep.

Good luck to you sweet x

I have restless cock syndrome.....

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

I used to get this a lot after swimming.

What worked for me: plenty of recovery if its due to exercise, mostly when my nutrition was right I didn’t get it.

If its not related to exercise: foam roll - a goos stretch and deep massage of the muscle, gets the blood going, this or a massage gun, worked for me when I got restless legs and could’t put it down to any activity I was doing.

Minimise salt intake. I avoided baths/showers too close to bed. You would think this helps you wind down and relax, for me and others it can affect your body regulating its temperature and give you that unsettled bed time feeling.

Sorry Im rambling, the above works for me, I guess it depends on the cause. Everyones body is different but good lifestyle changes as others here have mentioned may help, i.e cut down or out on smoking/alcohol, exercise during the day, try out some supplements etc...

I've had restless legs for years and it's often miserable. Best thing I've tried is magnesium supplements. I've been taking them for six weeks and the problem has pretty much gone.

Its the most horrendous thing, I suffered very badly with it when I was pregnant with my 5th....I tried everything their was...even tried the damp socks...I felt that just made it worse. I spent over 6 weeks with no sleep because of it..my iron levels were low so midwife told me to take my pregacare tablets..unbeknown to be that this stopped the restless legs after a few nights of starting them again...I looked into what I could be lacking in that would cause restless leg and was infact magnesium and probably a few other things...so only a suggestion maybe try some multi vitamins...Good luck xx

Better sleep magnesium spray oil

Epsom salt baths

Leg stretches before bed

Ensure you are hydrated

I’ve had it on and off since my second pregnancy 14 years ago. It is horrible...

Have you tried a bar of soap, Castille or Marseille? There’s a belief that the lye in the soap helps. Don’t know if it’s true or the placebo effect, but it dies work! They recommend placing the soap between the mattress and the fitted sheet, but sometimes I rub the dry bar on my calves and leave it on the bed, my legs touching it. It really, really helps me. I hope it helps you too! x

Mine seems to be related to not eating enough, so exercise can make it worse given that it increases your nutritional needs, so I try to make sure I get plenty of calories. Problem is, after a few rough nights, my appetite goes and it becomes a vicious cycle. Also seems to get me more autumn time when the temperature drops, same sort of thing I imagine.

"Thank you all for your responses and advice, I’ve got a phone appointment with the docs Monday so might ask for a blood test to check my iron levels, and also try a few things that people have mentioned that I’ve not already tried x"

I have been prescribed Quinine Sulfate by my GP for said condition.

Some very interesting answers in the thread.

Personally, exercise before bed didn't work, not tried deep heat but I found a cold damp towel half hour before bed worked.

What dosage of ropinerole are you on, they may be able to up it. I'm on 2mg tablets twice a day

Well the last two nights I’ve gone up to 4mg after a quick check with the docs and it’s been a bit better x"

Have you found it comes and goes? The more you think about it etc the worse it is?

"I get it the whole time and actually only started after I started having problems with my knee and I also keep getting a cramp in my calf during the night.."

I've started running again x trying to do 3 x5k a week so normally muscles are warmed up and stretched x but pain from hip down and cramping in calves is becoming a nightly occurrence x

Tried weighted blanket but no use

Taking an unit before bed eases it but probably not a long term solution x

I have it terrible, I'm always getting tingly legs when I lay down in bed, even if I've had a busy on my feet day. And I can't stop moving them as soon as I get into bed, never found a cure.

C'est moi Boudoir

I have back issues as well as joints and have to have B12 injections all the time so firmly believe that there is a link.

Restless legs and cramping are rotten to deal with. Managed to lock my back the other night after getting out of bed to stretch legs! Was in bits after it. Thanks for posting op, some great tips here.

Electric blanket, anti inflammatory gels and tens machine are my saving grace. I try to go easy on meds as I don't want to be out of it and that seems to be the only setting!

I too have suffered with this for years. I am on Roprinarole and was on the maximum dose of 4 tabs before bed. I found that the longer I took them the earlier in the evening I would get my symptoms and they were really bad. I have now gradually reduced the dose (over several months) to just one tablet before bed. I couldn’t cope without any, I did try.

I’ve found since living alone and hence sleeping mostly alone I’m better. Or I just don’t realise as I’m not constantly being woken up by my ex who was a very light sleeper. My boyfriend now doesn’t get affected by me if I am restless.

"The only thing that helped me was stretching and a weighted blanket. It’s awful

Weighted blanket? Good idea, I am in tears some nights I just want to sleep! X"

I also found this helpful. Hope you find a solution, it is deeply frustrating. Good luck

"Tonic water and stretching. "

You’d have to drink buckets of tonic water. It contains minuscule amounts of quinine

Try wearing socks in bed. Your ankle is the weakest and lowest point in your blood flow system therefore it has to work harder to return to your heart. If you wear socks it’s applies a degree of pressure around your ankle to assist circulation

Try half a banana for the potassium content

Hot water bottle or wheat ban across your feer
