Help with Depression

Hey
This is a bit difficult to write. First of I'm not seeking sympathy or attention so please don't send me "love and support" messages as it further plunges me into a deep state.
I have a hormonal condition which causes an imbalance. As a result i get fierce depression every now and then, it comes in severe waves. I've been on the edge of... you know.... its affected my life in every aspect from work to relationships to home life. What doesn't help too is it gives me an uncontrollable intense high sex drive which is partly the reason I'm on here probably, which further deepens my mental state.
I've taken anti deps but they don't work and i feel they mask the symptoms rather than dealing with anything, plus I don't want to be medicated. Is there anyone on here that's gone through or going through something similar that can perhaps give me some advice. I'm not once to ask for help normally, i usually keep things bottled up due to embarrassment or whatever but I feel everything is going against me lately and i don't really know what to do. Is there something alternative I can take? Or anyone know any methods...basically any suggestions would be appreciated. |

I feel your pain.
I spent 3 years on meds and they did fuck all.
Same as you, they killed my emotions but the underlying problems still existed, and still do. I just bottle it all up now.
You need to talk to someone.
Can you be referred to Talking Therapy or the like?

You sound very similar to me.
They didn't help me either.
No one can help me with the problem I have.
So I produced my own coping mechanisms.
I won't recommend these to you, as it only works for me and keeps me going and goes against all advice I've received.

I apologise if this sounds trite, but have you looked into your diet/exercise regime and supplements, in particular probiotics. Gut health can play a huge part in brain health. |

Yeah i take bio yoghurts and also eat healthy home cooked meals. Fast food actually makes me more depressed after i eat it which is weird as they pump it with dopamine chems |

Thank you. I tried the whole exercise thing. I walk with my dogs all the time and listen to music for example. I just day dream and i guess i feel an escape but when i get home it's gone again and depression is back. Seems only thing is if i walk from landsend to John o'groats non stop like a British forest Gump then i wont have it lol |

I'm a very laid back person and sh*t just keeps piling up and its so bloody testing.
My meds did work at first, fluoxitine i doubled the doesage again... just feels like they don't work.
But I know they do, without them im crying uncontrollable. Have zero motivation all the time.
This whole situation (covid) has also tested me to the brink ive lost everything pretty much.
Only recognised my illness 5 years ago when suffering severe PTSD after a messy break up.
I've had help on the NHS I actually hated talking to someone about my problems.
I do find it hard ti talk to family and friends as its completely natural to not want to be around negativity and I know for a fact no one can help me untill I help myself.
I'm learning the ways of why we think like we do and what triggers it and its helped massively. I was really good before lockdown, just this testing time thats broken it for me.

Have you tried counselling?

Knowledge of why exactly we think like it is an amazing thing. Its not hidden anymore and its actually very natural.
I like security alot so when you gain and lose all the time it's very overwhelming.
I think theorpy when you pay for it privately is very much tailored to your needs rather than the generic version. Although I wasn't ungrateful ot helps going to back to why your insecurity comes out in the first place.
I had nothing 5 years ago and rebuilt so much socially, financially and with my kids.
Think its all the unsecured times that's are really sending me into oblivion once again

Just about to say this! Happiness is actually linked to gut health ... look to your diet! Also exercise is the most underutilised anti-depressant!

Agree with trying trying different meds.
They had me on 6 different ones and 3 anti psychotics.
They helped kill the emotion.
But nothing takes away my underlying problem. And nothing ever will.

Thats why I dont think the NHS "mind" network arnt really good enough.
Private counselling is supposed to be a lot more amazing.
Gets to the root of the evil and slowly brings you back.
Not going to lie after what happened 5 years ago im over, to me its only time that heals wounds like that. |

I have a blood test Saturday to review hormone levels. I think I'm going to ask for a breakdown of what hormone is low or missing and push to recieve it |

I have a blood test Saturday to review hormone levels. I think I'm going to ask for a breakdown of what hormone is low or missing and push to recieve it"

Its a bit like morphine. You're in severe pain which is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. You are given morphine and the pain goes away so you're happy, but the issue your body is telling you is still there, unless you don't tackle whatever is causing the pain, you'll always need morphine. At least that's the best analogy i can think of. |

Multitude of stuff. Shit childhood, abusive father. Negligent or emotionaly absent mother, hormone imbalance, school bullying.... classic case basically |

I can't believe how similar we are
All these things relate to me, but are linked by one factor.
Religion.
There is no cure for me.
The past can't change. But we can control the present.
Perhaps looking into coping mechanisms could be an option for you? |

Chocolate does help, but then you end up being 7 stone overweight like me.
I truly believe my stomach has a lot to do with my psychological disorder. |

Seek medical intervention
. Drugs work for some not every one..
Work on what makes you feel good!

I had a similar childhood OP, my mum was absent due to her dieing when I was 9, I went to 11 schools by the time I was 13 whilst the only bully in my life was my dad.
Despite a disastrous start in life, I'm well adjusted and very happy. Having spent most of my life doing sport or outdoor activity, I can only assume that it's this that keeps in a good place. I've also chosen to work 3 days a week, swopping wealth for well being.
I don't know what lifestyle you have OP but if there are some positive changes that you could make and your able to make them then maybe you could give them a try? |

Thank you. I tried the whole exercise thing. I walk with my dogs all the time and listen to music for example. I just day dream and i guess i feel an escape but when i get home it's gone again and depression is back. Seems only thing is if i walk from landsend to John o'groats non stop like a British forest Gump then i wont have it lol

Chocolate always helps. I think my thing is these thing s like excersize, anti depressants, therapy, counceling, etc.... are just temporary fixes. You feel good during or a little bit after but the issue remains.
Its a bit like morphine. You're in severe pain which is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. You are given morphine and the pain goes away so you're happy, but the issue your body is telling you is still there, unless you don't tackle whatever is causing the pain, you'll always need morphine. At least that's the best analogy i can think of.

You may find an approach that induces trances - can’t use the H word on here - beneficial. Especially if the talking therapies have been ineffective. I dealt with my childhood stuff which was not as shit as yours through a mixture of psychodynamic/psychodramtic cathartic work, and transpersonal therapeutic approaches. The results were remarkable.I was able to transform my life and it has enabled me to reinvent myself a couple of times since then. I still find patterns and shadow material that I need to integrate but it has given me all the tools I need to do that. When I look back at my journey since then it has been amazing. |

Unfortunately the therapist I would have recommended has moved into leadership coaching. There are others, but I couldn’t give a personal recommendation. |

I totally get what you mean that talking (and meds) don't remove the problems. What worked for me (or at least what I tried to do until I got better) was learning to separate the problems from the feelings. In between the dips I could feel fine, laugh, enjoy myself even though my problems still existed at those times so I knew it wasn't the existence of problems that made me feel like that, it was how my brain had learnt to respond. I made an effort to be aware of times I laughed and was happy and would consciously think about them when it hit. Far easier to say than do because when it's bad there is no point in trying, its all a waste of time, it will never be better blah blah but that is only made up shit in your head. You really can choose not to believe it.

Completely agree with the awareness piece. I had issues after doing shit jobs in sandy places and although I never did it before, I started a diary. Less about events, more about feelings. Apart from the obvious stuff, I found common themes and discovered subtle triggers, which I know have coping mechanisms for.
Not sure how effective it would be for biological (hormonal) issues, but worth a try maybe? That and trying to eat well, get enough rest and some form of exercise.

Religion.
There is no cure for me.
The past can't change. But we can control the present.
Perhaps looking into coping mechanisms could be an option for you?"
I think this is one of the best free bits of advice you might get
But if some of it is old stuff you can work through it with help you could be refured by your gp to the NSPCC and start there if not it's expensive I go to a guy in London and has helped but I now need to start doing more for me some how. |

Can you be referred to Talking Therapy or the like?
I've tried therapy, unfortunately I'm one of those that it doesn't work on because talking about something doesn't remove it for me. Its like having a broken leg and talking about it, my leg is still broken, I'm sadly one of these people. Psychology doesn't work on the Irish is what Freud said, though I'm not Irish myself."
Therapy helped me with my problems a lot.Not depression but therapy helped me more than meds and it didn't magically fix my pain but showed me the path I should be walking on.Kind of gave me instructions for the hard work I must do myself but without those directions and without me pushing myself to do it then meds therapy or anything wouldn't if worked.What I'm trying to say is therapy only works if you use it just as instructions you must do to fix yourself x |

This is a bit difficult to write. First of I'm not seeking sympathy or attention so please don't send me "love and support" messages as it further plunges me into a deep state.
I have a hormonal condition which causes an imbalance. As a result i get fierce depression every now and then, it comes in severe waves. I've been on the edge of... you know.... its affected my life in every aspect from work to relationships to home life. What doesn't help too is it gives me an uncontrollable intense high sex drive which is partly the reason I'm on here probably, which further deepens my mental state.
I've taken anti deps but they don't work and i feel they mask the symptoms rather than dealing with anything, plus I don't want to be medicated. Is there anyone on here that's gone through or going through something similar that can perhaps give me some advice. I'm not once to ask for help normally, i usually keep things bottled up due to embarrassment or whatever but I feel everything is going against me lately and i don't really know what to do. Is there something alternative I can take? Or anyone know any methods...basically any suggestions would be appreciated. "
If your depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your body then unfortunately medication for the imbalance is usually the best way of helping it, and usually these medications need to be taken all of the time
Lots of new research out there about depression and diet and it's brilliant so perhaps look into that? Same as for help with hormonal imbalances, definitely worth looking into? |

Was in a deep depression a few years back too. Tried all sorts of medications and none of them worked. Ended up taking up regular exercise (4-5 days a week) and it really, really helped. Still get the odd bout of depression and anxiety, but not to the degree I had before increasing exercise. |

Sorry to hear you are going through this OP , I was treated pretty poorly by my dad which has given me many issues that come up all the time for me , I’ve had counselling but as he’s passed away I don’t feel like the issues would ever get resolved so I’ve had to learn to live with that fact. I’ve been on meds on and off for years for anxiety and currently on mirtazipine which is great for me . I can recommend looking up a guy called Eckhart Tole on you tube and watching some of his videos, I’m sure he’s done some that could help you but start with Living In The Now , might help a little and good luck with your blood test x |

Hey OP. I saw what you wrote about a hormone imbalance it could be worth getting your tests levels checked for sure.
I had mine done a while ago and my test was naturally dropping off with age. I am now on Testosterone replacement therapy and it’s brilliant for many many different reasons especially well-being.
I am not sure it’s well received on the NHS but in the US it’s seen as normal as HRT.
Worth asking about.

I was going to mention micro-dossing. You get get dossing kits from holland, take about 1-2 weeks.
They are triffles not mushrooms and take 1 day on, three days off.
You have to trippy effect but it does raise you from dipression.

These ideas are all based on ky own experience. I know one size does not fit all so ignore the ones you want
Go back to your GP. Tell them nothing they have done so far has helped and pushed for a psychotherapy referral (not just talking therapies!) And a referral to an endocrinologist to look at the hormonal issues. (One thing my GP recommended was going to A&E when unwell and leading with the physical symptoms, it helps get a specialist referral, I did this and saw a specialist that day!)
Also don't dismiss medication, I had to try three different types until I found one that suited me. Yes it takes time but worth it for the long term solution.
I also found creative therapies really helped me - now drawing is more effective than anything else. Lots of art, music, laughter, singing therapy stuff online. It isn't about being good at it (I am no artist) just about the creative outlet. I know it sounds wanky and I probably would have rolled my eyes at first too!
Find others who experience similar feelings, there is strength in feeling part of a pack who understand.
Floatation tanks also helped me, as did mindfulness - the Headspace app worked for me! Xx |

My ex had this after having a bad accident and suffering with ptsd from it and it really helped him ! |

I don’t know if you’ve tried any of the alternative therapies? Acupuncture? Homeopathy? Sometimes a more holistic approach might help, along with diet and exercise etc. I have suffered from depression in the past so I do feel for you. |
