Thinking of doing some serious travelling in the next few years. Bearing in mind I hate crowds and built-up areas, where would you recommend? I have a couple ideas already but where are your 'must see's'? Anywhere at all. |

When i was younger the idea of travelling just didnt appeal to me, i was a homebird. My sister has always been the traveller and has gone to some wonderful places.
There are places i would love to visit now, but like you i dont like busy places or lots of people, but one of the places i would like to go is peru.
I know from previous threads there are lots of people on here that are widely travelled so im sure you will get some great replies.
Ps, last year i did visit somewhere i wanted to go, it was the mountserret monestry not far from barcelona and it was better than i imagined |

I mentioned on another thread that I had rented a house in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina a good few years ago now, was truly lovely... right on the beach so fell asleep and wakened to the sound of the ocean. Was off season and a really great price.
and the mountains of Switzerland are just amazing.
good luck with your travel and have a great time |

If I have the time, and lots of money, then I would go to Norway on a multi-stop camping trip, and travel as far north as possible to see the Northern Lights.

"and all parts of Scotland "
If you're staying in Britain then no doubt Scotland is amazing. If not then the alps and surrounding areas in Germany and Austria are amazing. Can recommend Barbados also, oh and also niagra falls in Canada |

Venice off season, wander the back streets just a block from the main drags can be magiccaly quiet.
Sit and enjoy a wine and nibbles and watch the world pass slowly by. Small trips out to Burano and Treporti can be great too - avoid Murano and St. Marks square except late night if you hate crowds. |

Cuba - the Carribean without Americans, Galapagos - stunning wildlife, Vancouver - seriously civilised, Oman - a real hidden gem, Singapore and Hong Kong - just for the contrast .... , Talin - like prague but without the stag and hen parties

The golden triangle - and island hopping in Thailand.
Not the typical tourist spots (although a trip to Bangkok is a must and a real eye opener!!).
There's a great spot on the northern border where you can look down and see 3 countries - stunning and well worth the trek! |

Thank you all so much for your input. Like Diamond, I wouldn't/couldn't when I was young but now, having the freedom and means to go, there is a whole world out there. I'm scared of being on a 'plane- fear of confinement- but I'm gonna sign up for a course in the autumn. So- major, major thing for me, this. Any more suggestions? Thing is, anyone ever seen an ancient backpacker on their travels? |

Peru, including the inca trail. One of the most amazing countries in the world. Would recommend it to anyone. Costa rica is close by so that's worth a visit whilst that way too. |

If you hate crowds and built up area's there is the Antartic, Sahara Desert, Amazon rain forest. To avoid crowds there are empty schools, Houses of Parliament,Falklands probably many more. |

I plan on going back to some of the places I visited in a few years. I think at our age we're allowed to use a wheely bag though.
I recommend Kandy in Sri Lanka, Luang Prabang and Vang Vien in Laos, Bali (especially inland), Koh Chang and Chang Mai in Thailand and Boston in teh US. All lovely places. |

It's funny, I had places like Fiji, New Zealand, Iceland, Alps, E USA in the fall, France on the map but hadn't thought of Asia, other than Kyoto. My, there is such a world out there once the scales drop off the eyes. |
