I wonder if the royal family will,at some point, ditch the anglicised version (Windsor) of their real surname which is the German Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. King George V in approximately the year 1917 when we were at war with Germany adopted the surname Windsor to distance the British royal family from its German roots. No doubt after having a sideways glance at his cousin Tsar Nicholas and his family of Russia who had all been executed by "the people" during the Russian Revolution. I would love to be a fly on the wall when the new younger members of the royal family are given the facts about their family history. About an entire branch of the family shot at point-blank range and their bodies stuffed down a well. |

Who cares? You can't blame people for the deeds of their dead relatives. Plus I would be sure that their name has been legally changed.

"Have you researched your own family history? Do you have all the details of the last 6 generations of your family? "
We here are looking at the Windsor line and not my line which just happens to be Fitzwilliam. |

No doubt they already know the history of their family, why would they ditch their family name, it won't change anything. |

If you had a double-hyphenated Germanic sounding name like Saxe-Coburg-Gotha would you want to change it to Windsor?
Windsor does not quite have a ring to it.
Windsor sounds like a carpet manufacturer from Leeds. |

Well with the amount of forenames they all have, surely it's the only way to fit it all on a birth certificate |

I beg to differ. For the sake of clarity. Commoners are murdered. Royalty is executed. |

She's not referred to as Mrs Windsor very often and I'm sure the money citculates between her on share and off shore tax haven bank accounts OK.
The family know their history I'm sure. But privilege and money are their priority |

Poor Prince Charles must have been ragged terribly at school when being introduced to other boys. Probably something on the lines of "may I introduce Charles Windsor to the class,". Some bright spark would be bound to say "oh, Charlie Windsor don't you have a hyphen?" |

Because the queen made him prince of Wales, therefore he uses Wales. It shouldn’t be this hard, should it?! |

Harry Wales son's surname is Mountbatten-Windsor. Unusual not to have the same surname as one of your parents. |

"What was Princess Anne's maiden name ?
Mountbatten-Windsor.
Odd for all your children to have different surnames yet the same parents"
Mountbatten is the name Philip took when he naturalised, after his uncle, Louis Mountbatten, hence, Mountbatten-Windsor. |

It could imply that the surname Mountbatten is more preferable to Windsor. It also may be for a reason that is not currently clear. |

If OP, you're trying to imply the british monarchs are not british you are sadly mistaken, The last foreign born monarch was George II, and he died in 1760! that's 261 years ago! all subsequent kings or queens were born here.
