It’s not a hot dog then.
It’s a pulled pork roll.
I only butter the roll if it’s for bacon.
That’s not a hot either though.

"You call it a hot dog but surely it's a sandwich by a different name.
By that logic a burger should just be a meat patty sandwich
That sounds far less appealing "
A burger is a burger until you put it a bap it is sandwich. |

They were/are just ham and cheese rolls here. Unless in slices bread, then it's labelled a sandwich. |

Wrong. They are not Sandwiches, they are rolls, baps, cobs etc.
For example cooked bacon between two pieces of sliced bread= a sandwich.
Cooked bacon in a roll= a bacon roll- see how easy it is? |

Well, a sandwich is a sandwich, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

Sausage in a finger roll. A cumberland sausage in a finger roll for example is absolutely not a hot dog. A finger roll is a completely different creation to a hot dog bun. |

A hotdog is the frankfurter sausage.
If you put a hotdog between sliced bread, it's a sandwich.
In a roll, bap etc .. it's hotdog in a roll/bun etc
Burger goes in burger bun...
Basically if it's in sliced bread, it's a sandwich. Like a pie sandwich, or fish finger sandwich...
Other bread products are named as such... eg. Cheese roll, sausage bap, chicken wrap... |

A hot dog is a food consisting of a grilled or steamed sausage served in the slit of a partially sliced bun. It can also refer to the sausage itself. The sausage used is a wiener or a frankfurter. The names of these sausages also commonly refer to their assembled dish.
But it still doesn't answer the question is a hotdog a sandwich? |

It is, only you want to think of a sandwich as a universal generic term for the combination of bread and a filling. But if you want to go with that, then is a cheeseburger is a sandwich? |

No, it's not. Is a cheeseburger the same as a cheese sandwich? I think it's a case where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. |

Ok but why is it not a sandwich ?"
Are we talking about the hot dog being between two pieces of bread or a split roll ?
Think of "sandwich" as being the heading and the opportunities within that the sub genres.
So I can go into a sandwich shop and and ask for a tuna salad sandwich, tuna salad baguette, tuna salad roll if they were all called sandwiches how do I get what I want without pointing.
Common sense comes into it.
Is a burger a sandwich, is a sausage roll a pastie (it's got meat inside pastry)
However life's short and if you want to call the iconic hotdog a sandwich all is good |

I am not saying you can't call it a hotdog just asking if it's a sandwich by another name?
By the fact that you are going into a sandwich shop to buy a hotdog than does that not mean that it is a kind of sandwich? |
