The Polo Shirt debate and other ‘odd’ items of apparel

So a really gorgeous friend of mine on here has a thing about polo shirts.

A real thing.

She hates them. Another friend finds them rather cute.

Your views please and any pics to help us decide? Oh and any other clothing items that just do/don’t do it for you? I have problems with men who wear shiny shirts. For me, shiny shirts, especially pink or purple shiny shirts are a nono

Here's my take on polo shirts

Man with tight body & big arms, yes

Man with slim body and stick arms, no

Man with belly & moobs, no

Polo shirts tend to stick to you and exaggerate your build

That includes showing off the worst parts

So, out of an abundance of caution, they are 'usually' best avoided

I don't mind polo shirts, I'm in complete agreement about the shiny shirt... Just no! That and some patterned ones, they just give me the cringe, worse when it's pattered and shiny!

And I may sound old now but what's the deal with socks and sliders!!?? Am I missing something

In terms of clobber that I don't care for: 3/4 pants on men, especially short men

Shoes with lots of metal or big diamantes on them, especially cheap looking black boots

High heels with thick cork or hession soles

Oh I love men in polo shirts and chinos, it's a classic look, like nice crisp shirts in pastel shades with sleeves rolled up.

I'm not the biggest fan of t-shirts with brand slogans across them like Lidl or whatever, that doesn't really do it for me.

Polo shirts have replaced cotton shirts for school uniforms.

Gone are the ties, and some don't even have to wear a blazer now.

They are a utility item of clothing I think.

Like most clothes, it’s how well you wear them. Polo shirts can look good if they fit properly and are a nice colour.

I’m not really into men who wear sports wear unless they’re doing sport or just slobbing around the house, doing DIY etc. They shouldn’t be worn on a date, for example.

But we all have opinions on what looks good or not, even if we respect the person's right to wear whatever the fuck they want. I see men in football shirts and just think what the fuck is that about you're a fucking adult!

Always a winner, helps create that V shape even if a man doesn't have one. Bonus points if there are tufts of hair sprouting out the top of the pouch, the sides... all over really.

Acceptable situations to wear a polo shirt are; 1. retail uniform 2. Nowhere the fuck else.

I've reassessed my opinion of polo shirts since this came up recently on another thread.

I do like them, they are practical and low maintenance, but I don't want to be one of those spikey-gelled hair knobheads.

Thing is we don't have a lot of other options for casual wear. Shirts are too formal and need ironing, and T-shirts are usually quite bland and shapeless.

Shiny apparel is a bit footballer chic. Polo shirts, if new and ironed can look smart but needs to be pristine probably otherwise it looks tatty and even an expensive one ends up looking like Sports Direct tat.

Confession: in my early teens I had the perfect shirt for you guys. Purple with a darker purple floral pattern. Both had a different shine to them.

Every amateur team player from Chess to murder ball and everything in between wear them as their off pitch kit. So much so that the Golf Apperal companies reinvented their polo's,

I wouldn't go out in one (night out) these days as even the crown I work for has us walking round in them in here. Saying that they are a quick fix if you travelling with a blazer for a work dinner.

Polo shirts are like every other piece of clothing/fashion... the right type of good quality clothing tgst suits the wearer and worn at the appropriate time is the key....

Polo shirts at a Michelin star Restaraunt.... absolutely not..... Fred Perry polo, jeans at the local pub for a quick pint... absolutely yes.

I think polo shirts in a smart casual sense can make a guy look well.

E.g. coupled with a simple suit and smart trainers.

I wear quite a bit of 50/60s style clothing. Depending on thr cut a polo style top can look good. Skin tight clothing when designed not to be skin tight does not look good

The skinhead look has it's origins among Jamaican rude boys (gangsters in sharp suits). Working class white kids in britain made their own version as a reaction to their rich counterparts who were wearing flashy suits, but listening to the same Jamaican sounds. Workwear such as Dickies, Fred Perry and Docs became fashionable for the first time.

That look was stolen by the nazi fraternity in the 80s because it's a very masculine look. The beautiful irony is many from the gay community sport that look nowadays for much the same reason. More power to them.

My pet peeve is v neck collars. Detest them. Much prefer a tight crew neck collar.

The other pet peeve is leaving a shirt unbuttoned down to your solar plexus or lower.

I had a really nice quality long sleeved polo shirt from M and S which was a perfect look on my well proportioned body.

I kept it for smart casual wear and one day was going to a local charity AGM and stopped to pick up another member.

She suffers from OCD and said let me iron your shirt. it didn't need it but I acquiesced. on first contact the iron melted the elastine in the shirt, ruining it. I had no spare and had to wear it. Luckily I was more aware of the damage than others.

I was 'effing furious about it because they never repeated that classic line.The only comparable long sleeved style has been Rugby shirts which invariably have larger flappy white collars and are of stiffer material.

Polo shirts fit me fine in a non contour hugging way but some occasions don't call for bare arms.

T shirts are my summer option but can't stand V necks, nor on sweaters.

Nowadays If I'm wearing a suit it will be with a smart, brand new, T shirt but

NOT a white one. That just looks creepy, as though I forgot the next layer!

I have a very old (circa 1940) oiled, natural coloured wool Norwegian style Coastal Command roll necked thick pullover which, if I had any sense, I should be wearing now to save on the heating bill.
