OP, I’ve noticed you are rather despondent about Britain in your posts. A few years living in most parts of the world would make you rather more appreciative of it and to see that it really is rather admired still. That has been my experience. There is no one as harsh on Britain as a Brit.

I am talking about generally, of course, not specific micro cases of a few people’s opinions.

I don’t mean to lecture. He is entitled to his opinion, of course. I’m simply saying that Britain isn’t anywhere near as bad as certain newspapers portray it to be here. It’s not perfect and no nation is but in general, the foreigners I know who are living here, albeit temporarily, love it here and are in awe of the advantages we have here, like free healthcare for a start, amongst many many other things. These are people who are here for the sole purpose of putting their children through our well known boarding schools, which is an enormous ‘export’ as it contributes billions in terms of the fees, tuition, housing, insurance, etc that these families pay into the economy without taking a penny from it.

If the UK is ‘shit’, why is half the world still competing fiercely to get into our world renowned schools and universities? This is my own personal experience of this issue alone, here, now.

Well in my own clumbsy way I was paraphrasing an article that I read in the Independent. Of course I am not as eloquent as many on here. The story for me is one of dashed dreams. Economic migrants risking life to get here then finding that the English garden of Roses is more a English hedge of thorns. Life in an army camp riddled with Covid and time to try your luck elsewhere. Do I think that England is shite? No. Do I think there are better places to live in England than others? Hell yes..

Whitby for one. Harrogate another, York etc. Some other places less desirable for me such as London... can't stand the place...

But those who risk all get here then risk all to get back.. an interesting story even if it's only one or two leaving but as we know.. you can't keep everyone happy...

You may have misunderstood me. I am not telling you nor the OP anything in the way that you mean it. I am giving my observation of life in England as being not quite as bad as the article might suggest. It is neither black or white, simply an opinion amongst others and my own experience and observation living abroad and now in the UK. I was merely citing an example of my observation. It is simply to offer a balanced view.

Perhaps I have misunderstood Forum etiquette. Are we supposed to go along with the OP’s opinions if we want to post in a thread? I’m not quite sure what you mean by ‘black and white’.

Try living in China with religious intolerance.

Or Russia with homophobic hatred and persecution.

Or how about Venezuela or Belarus with corrupt leaders.

There's also North Korea run by a mad dictator.

How about Europe who are fucking up the vaccine rollout putting lives at risk.

We have it good here, it's often forgotten there are places on earth that are a hell hole compared to our Island.

I agree that in their circumstance, it is awful. Their expectations of what they would receive here is not what they had been led to believe. It is a matter of dashed hopes and dreams and very sad.

I think that some migrants fall for the old “streets paved with gold” myth and when the reality of working in some illegal sweat shop or for an illegal gang master. Then to top it all, living 5 to a room in some dodgy converted HMO or similar hits home then maybe they do wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze.

Quite so. It would be the same has they stayed behind perhaps but they believed that could ‘make it’. It’s awful when you see a family risking their lives to get across the Channel and you can only hope that they can ‘make it’.

I am a firm believer in immigration. A nation stagnates and stifles when it remains insular. I have seen this in Asia where they have had exclusion policies only to be desperately reversing them now in order to become more competitive on a global platform. I have seen children of Vietnamese ‘boat prople’ who are politicians, bankers, lawyers, doctors, etc in Australia now.

Quite so.

If we (and of course, other nations anywhere) did not have immigration, we would miss out culturally and biologically in the long term.

A gene pool that remains static, becomes weaker over time and our species’ history has been punctuated by many episodes of migration and genetic exchange.

Well having a house in France I have seen how the young guys trying to get over to the U.K. live there - they don’t get any support from the State and the U.K.’s roads are still paved with gold as far as they are concerned.

The devil is in the detail - EU rules state that everyone has to have equal treatment, so if they haven’t paid into the system they can’t claim. We fell foul of the system because we had different levels of support.

Well it's interesting that the union of England Scotland and Northern Ireland may fall.. and perhaps we will see Scotland join the EU and England remain out. I imagine that being an economic migrant fleeing war torn France may find a more desirable life in Scotland. Jungle camps form south of Hadrian's wall.. Cumbrian Police turning a blind eye to those crossing the wall into Scotland and a pop star apologising to those in the camp on behalf of Scotland..

Lol so the people who live in Scotland don’t pay taxes? We have 5 million people England have 60 million. I don’t go down the route of generalising nations of people as through experience you meet nice and not so nice people wherever you go. I didn’t even vote for wee Nicola although she has done well through corona virus

It was kinda tongue in cheek chap "

"Independent reporting that life in England is so shite that many asylum seekers are risking their lives to go back to Europe..

Bit of detail wouldn't go amiss before you post your mad shite

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/asylum-seekers-europe-barracks-home-office-uk-b1797553.html"

You would think a humane gmnt would actually be appalled by that.

I’m happy with that. I heard wee Nicola has already started a wall. At least you guys won’t need a dingy to get home

I can never work out what is worse. Having one of the Krankies in charge or one of the chuckle brother, makes no odds, as Robin Williams said

Politics: “Poli” a Latin word meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "bloodsucking creatures".

Although I wouldn’t want to do there job. A worldwide pandemic hits and everyone expects them to just know what to do. Even if you do something well it’s never going to suit everyone

Course they did Thomas

The independent is renowned for its sensationalist and inaccurate reporting.

I think the UK is a wonderful place to live and I hate it when people just moan about it.

As others have said we have a lot of good things going. If you don't like, leave or change what you don't like.

"OP, I’ve noticed you are rather despondent about Britain in your posts. A few years living in most parts of the world would make you rather more appreciative of it and to see that it really is rather admired still. That has been my experience. There is no one as harsh on Britain as a Brit.

I am talking about generally, of course, not specific micro cases of a few people’s opinions.

That's you told Tom!

That's me told too

Does every discussion really need to be so black and white? I love a bit of grey myself - like a silver fox of a conversation. True flexible open discussion and learning as opposed to conflicting "opinions" based in our limited personal worldly experience

Crossed wires I guess fella. As far as I'm concerned there is no forum etiquette although some folk will no doubt hold differing views on that subject. I honestly believe people will judge others on the etiquette, approach and motivation they display as individuals rather those imposed invisibly by the fab cooperative.

Welcome to fab though and enjoy the forum "

. Seriously, you’re starting to make me nervous (I say with a little nervous chuckle) Fab cooperative? Some folk? (Gulp)

Not to worry, there is always some form of ‘etiquette’ when groups gather. It’s natural. How we let it manifest is something we need be mindful of, I suppose. I’ll get the hang of it in time. Thanks for the welcome.

"So asylum seekers put life’s there own life’s at risk to come here then they decide it’s not as good as they thought it’s not oz it’s a real place with difficult situations going on. We are very lucky to be born here. I’ve never known a Scottish man getting on a boat for asylum in Syria

Why is it that the poor Scots & Welsh don’t migrate to England?"

James VI of Scotland invaded England in 1603. Why Nicola Sturgeon and her cohorts are fighting to ‘leave’, I have no idea?

I have personal experience of how journalists make up facts when they can’t get a source. I was questioned about a personal matter relating to a prominent family at a wake, no less!! Journalists pretending to be family friends to attend and asking questions but being turned away. When no one talked to them, most reported what they knew but one national broadsheet included completely nonsensical facts with diagrams showing ‘what happened’!!! ?????? it was all from the reporters’ imagination and utter fantasy. It wasn’t even logical.
