Cultural appropriation and why is it bad?

Well generally it's not. There are some things that step over lines, when you take something fundamentally significant to one culture and sell knock offs of it in Poundland. Generally though it's just people being offended on behalf of others. |

I find it strange that I've only ever encountered the term cultural appropriation in this country. In all the other countries I've visited or lived in they see it as cultural appreciation and are extremely happy when you wear the same clothes as them ect. Blacking up your face is wrong, vile and nasty and always has been. |

The Adele thing? I don't think that in that case Bantu Knots actually have an inherent symbology or anything, so I think it's just people grinding axes.
However, those axes seem to be more from bigots in Tory rags blowing small complaining voices into much bigger reactions.
Random no one on "the left" has a daft opinion, right wing media pretend everyone on "the left" also think the same and it's actually an issue when it's not. |

Jamaicans are some do the most welcoming people, it’s usually those who aren’t Jamaican in this situation for example who are offended. |

I think it’s another phrase used as a stick to bash others with.
If we really look back into history almost everyone has likely “culturally appropriated” somewhere.
How do different cultures coexist together successfully if there isn’t a form of “mixing” or experiencing that culture? Nobody “owns” a culture, I understand some things can be distasteful, but to call for example white women braiding their hair cultural appropriation is ridiculous.
Cultural appreciation would be more apparent, many people embrace other cultures and it’s beautiful. |

That's what I thought. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say getting a tribal tattoo is cultural appropriation yet we've been doing it for years.
But I wanted to start the thread as I don't know whether I'm just being ignorant for not seeing it. |

Yes to this! Sometimes people take something that might have a certain value religiously or in the beliefs of certain communities and don’t even know what it means, or use it as a trend. So it could be seen offensive
Also when it comes to the media or movies, I guess say giving the role for a white woman to portray an Asian girl (for example) that’d be also a cultural appropriation and seen negatively. Mainly because there are plenty of Asian actresses who can do that job.
Having said that I think now you would get someone offended because U are keeping bounties down ur pants. Just to highlight that some people would find ways to get offended for the sake of it |
