Following on from Localkinks thread

Name a band you got dragged along to but ended up blowing your mind.

For me it was the

Allmans Bros Band.

Remember thinking, who the ffk are these guys (this was pre Top Gear days) but once I got into the venue I knew it was going to be a great night, full of cool people, place was buzzing and when the band started playing I was blown away,

Actually another one in a similar vein was Muse - not so much the first time I saw them as that was ruined by the crowd around us but saw them at the Emirates a couple of years later and the sheer theatricality coupled with their ability to make such a sound as a three piece blew me away

Black Sabbath. Went in with low expectations due to Ozzy's stuttering speach and age. Holy shit can he turn it on when he's on stage.

They were headliners at Download when I saw them and watching them bring the house down was the perfect end to the weekend.

Hefty Hideaway

Back in my married days I bought the mister Motörhead tickets for him and his bestie. Unfortunately circumstances meant I had to go.

I wasn’t happy. The venue reeked of stale beer and staler bodies, the crowds were absolute bell ends. Oh. But the music saved it. I totally get why Lemmy is revered. What a gig! One of my all time favourite gigs.

I have seen hundreds of bands and artists in my time. From Billy Bragg to Botch, Robyn to Raging Speedhorn, Modest Mouse to Morrissey. Some one-hit-wonders to some seminal and incredibly important artists. Pop acts, punk acts, pink acts, and some of the heaviest mathcore going. I’ve been to quiet gigs that could have done with a good cushioned seating arrangement, to hardcore punk gigs where, if you didn’t leave with a bloody nose, a black eye, and a few broken ribs, you weren’t trying hard enough.

But, for me, the most mind blowing gig wasn’t having my face melted off at a Sunn o))) gig, or watching the singer from Taproot climb up to the stalls of the Manchester Academy, and throw himself off into the crowd, below. Nor was it watching the singer from Raging Speedhorn pull a guy’s shoes off and throw him into the incredibly violent mosh pit to get stamped on because he kept getting up on stage and getting in the way (it was a tiny stage). While all of these gigs were incredibly noteworthy, it was a gig for a couple of indie bands in the 90’s that I always look back on with fondness.

I had tickets to see Shed Seven with Puressence as the supporting act at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, in Oldham, yeeeeeeears ago... like, 1998/9. I must have been about 19. I knew and liked both bands but, I had never seen either of them live.

Puressence came on and the place erupted. They were absolutely spectacular! I was right down at the front, in the pit, and the whole crowd were going crazy... all for a support band! At one point, the singer stood at the front of the stage and said, “I never thought I’d say this but, COME ON, OLDHAM!” He must have appreciated how hyped up the crowd were too. It was just a happy, energetic riot, and it was mind-blowing!

They finished their set, and I said to my mate, “Bloody hell, Shed Seven have some big shoes to fill, now!” And then Shed Seven came on and performed one of the best gigs I’ve ever been lucky enough to see. Front to the back, heads were bouncing up and down as the entire crown were jumping. The whole night was so full of energy. I was soaked through by the end of it. If that night didn’t cause some structural damage to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, I’d be very surprised. Well done to everyone who were in attendance - you made a nerdy teenager very happy.

I saw My Chemical Romance when they were supporting Thursday. They hadn’t even released their first album in the UK, yet. They were flogging copies of it at the back of the hall, and I was impressed enough to buy it.

At the Manchester Academy? I was at that gig. Got fireworks shot into us by some scrotes on push bikes, from the housing estate opposite, while we waited outside. We thought it was part of the show until they started firing directly at us. One banged right next to a guy’s head and singed all his hair. Dangerous!

The Prodigy were awesome, though!

I think it would have to be Iron Maiden. It was 23 March 1980, at Deeside Leisure Centre, and they were the support act for Judas Priest who I really liked. They had just released their debut single Running Free in February and it was in the charts. Their first album was yet to be released

They blew us away with Sanctuary, Prowler, and the most memorable of all Phantom of the Opera amongst others as they played the entire album.. The soaring dual lead guitars, incredible bass playing, wild drumming and almost punk like lead vocals of Paul Di Anno gave the performance a raw quality I can’t forget. Much as I liked what came after from Maiden, it is that gig that is etched in my memory

Well done to everyone who were in attendance - you made a nerdy teenager very happy."

I really enjoyed reading that

"The Flaming Lips. Every single time I've seen them

I was thinking this. I saw them in a tiny tent at Glastonbury when they were largely unknown.

I liked the one song I knew, but remember after 30 seconds going “holy s**t” .

Seen them many times too."

I just love them - Wayne Coyne is sublime x

I have lost count of how many gigs I have been to where I have been utterly surprised by the band....the short list includes:

Skinny Lister...shanty punk folk band who started a set with a sea shanty , had a circle pit half way through, handed out rum from a flaggon and ended with the double bass player crowd surfing and playing at same time!

Sheafs... They filled in for a festival slot mid afternoon as original artist didn't bother turning up...they had just finished playing a 80-100 cap tent, came on stage in a 2k plus tent and had the crowd bouncing as one from the first note...it was really one of those I was there moments!

Slaves....in a barn, flares going off sweat dripping off the walls...a guitarist and a drummer sounding soooo loud! Next saw them at a festival where you could see the whole front row saying 'who the fu are you' vibe then jumping around like loons.

The biggest surprise was...

Marmozets.... dingy club in Bradford, don't think any of them was over 18....the energy was amazing...fast forward to a big festival and I mentioned that I first saw them then and just got hugged!

God I miss live music

Bob

Second Vintage Trouble. Fantastic live band. "

Definitely Vintage Trouble, have seen them 3 times now.

Reverend And The Makers were absolutely brilliant at Camden Rocks a few years ago.

I was dragged along to see many bands that I didnt like by an ex many moons ago, one of which was the rasmus, didnt rate them at all until the frontman pulled out an acoustic guitar and absolutely smashed out about 10 songs that sounded amazing. Later discovered that he couldn't speak a word of english but learned their songs in english.

I guess it's the first proper grown up gig I went to, The Wedding Present in Manchester, small venue that closed decades ago. I loved everything about it. The music, the atmosphere, the indie culture. I've been going to gigs ever since, still see the Weddos, still prefer small venues.

About 5 years ago i went to see Dr Feelgood at the Robin Hood in Birmingham, supporting band was Eddie and The Hot Rods. When i was younger i never really liked Eddie and The Hot Rods. But that night at the Robin Hood was a complete eye opener. The drumming was relentless and transfixed me, only John Bonham has done that to me before. Altogether that was one hell of a night and one i will never forget.

For me it was Rammstein, I had heard their music for a long time. Seeing them in concert took it to another level, pyrotechnics, flame throwers and a foam machine. See how how the germans crowd surf, in an inflatable!
