That's good and yes I saw you were a bit under the weather. I'm doing all right keeping my portion sizes smaller than I used to eat and trying to eat between 1000/1200 calories a day. I've bought a new owl brooch to wear at the funeral xx

But still focused on food intake and now about 10lb down since Christmas.

Hope every one doing well,, what's your go to meal that's healthy and tasty?

I had chicken, rice and peas tonight.. Left overs for tomorrow

Edinburgh (She/Her)

Currently have a new positive mental state since the bringing of the year. Up early. Breakfast (never before). Small app workouts and yoga in lunch breaks. Less couch in evenings.

Only looking to drop 6-8kgs. But want my fitness back....

The Goal - fit back into my leather jeans again...

Working on it.. positive thinking...

Morning

I lost a pound at my weigh in on Friday - which is all good

I still have 2 and a half stone to go so it's pretty slow - but I lost 2 and a half stone from July 2020

So hopefully with the right attitude I might be nearer my goal by the summer this year.

I have a pair of size 12 jeans that I used to feel great in as motivation- I'm a size 16 / 18 at the moment.

Following my post on the last thread - I've been following a "fat to fit" app daily and also taking a brisk 30-60 minute walk daily, as well as cutting out the crap I was eating - have gone from 15st 4lbs to just under 15st in just over a week

Thanks - is called "Lose Weight App For Men" - to be honest was the first one came up on the Android App Store but has a lot of downloads and mostly positive reviews.

Has three levels Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced - gives you a routine each day that on Beginner level is about 5-10 mins and slowly builds over the 30 day program. Can tie it to Google Fit too so combine the two to track the routines and step count

Jabbed yesterday. All over aches, temperature but ibuprofen brought me back a bit.

Just going slow on my bike today but I'm on day 136 of my daily 90min cardio so I'm not going off the rails. Even a crap workout is a workout.

Good luck people, you may not have the same drive every day. So some days you just have to coast along.

Day 144 here now

46.3lbs/21kg down.

50mins of fasting high intensity cardio in the AM, 40mins before bed.

Food, bran flakes and lots of protein, eggs, chicken, lean bacon if I need the electrolytes. Carbs or whatever in case I'm waning just small amount though.

Please don't ever be upset if you gain a pound here or there, look at the trend.

A Pokal Ikea glass of water is over a pound. It might just mean you drank more. So don't beat yourself up, I fluctuate easily 2+kg from after the AM cardio to before bed. That's about 5 pounds. So don't let the scales define your happiness.

Keep it up everyone and don't lose all those curves, I'm aiming for healthy and happy myself, sexy comes from those two I think.

Not as easy as it says in the tin but....

Only way to sustain any weight loss is 80% diet + 20% exercise.

Just try and change the basics like bread, nay fizzy drinks etc

Some really inspiring comments on this thread.

A few things that I keep in mind. One lb of fat stores roughly 3500kcal of energy. People often loose weight fast at the start of a diet but it isn't all fat - to give an idea, depending on your weight you'd need to run or walk somewhere slightly over a marathon distance to burn the calories in just one lb of fat. Don't be disheartened by others with figures far higher than yours - they haven't discovered some magic bullet that you'll never find, they've just had a big pooh/wee or a change in diet/drinking habits has meant less water retention. They have their journey, you have yours. Big drops at the start of a diet are great for initial motivation but slow and steady is better (and more realistic) after that. (One caveat, long distance swimming will burn a lb/hour, Channel swimmers lose significant weight in a single swim )

As above, many things can affect your weight, too little water and your body tries to store what you have, the amount of food in your gut, retained fluid in muscles to repair damage. If I do a really long run I'll often not feel like eating much that evening. With dehydration I may be 3 - 5 lb below what I weighed in the morning. A day later I'll be at least 1/2 stone heavier - as above it is trends that count and a steady one lb/week is much better for long term change.

It is much harder to burn calories and far easier to take them on than most people realise. People will aim to be able to run 5k for example but a 5k run won't even burn the calories of a bowl of cereal. Far better to not take the calories on than try to burn them.

Muscle burns far more calories than fat - two people who weigh the same but one is heavy with fat, the other with muscle will burn very different amounts of calories just sat on the sofa. Exercise that builds muscle may not burn so many calories during the exercise period as CV work but the long term effects are far greater.

Mental aspect of weight loss is huge, several comments on here about feeling like there is no point show this. It is probably what I struggle with the most. For me having a long term goal helps but better still is a long term effect. When I have a bad week I can see I've put on a pound or two since the week before but knowing I'm still over a stone below where I started helps me put that in perspective.

Good luck all

Mr.

Since this lockdown which I’ve found so much harder than the others .... more stress I’ve turned back to snacking and only exercising probably a quarter of what I did before and at my diabetic clinic last week this showed in my blood results

I’ve got 12 weeks to get back on track as don’t want any more meds to the ones I already have

SW is quite good in that the recipes are very tasty and although I’ve never done SW per se, I do sometimes eat some of the recipes.

It’s tough when you’re not feeling in the mood, but the book I recommended above as good reading material (and the author sees lots of people who have tried all sorts of diets under the sun) is not only an interesting read, but has tips that I have used. Sleep is also important. Not only does it play a role in weight loss but it also affects your appetite and the hormone that makes you feel hungry. Other take-homes from the book are: lose your bread bin.- you’re not going to need it any more. Stay away from refined carbs, so pasta typically, go for whole grains where possible. Lose alcohol as much as you can and also sugar, but that really comes under the refined carbs heading largely. A higher fat diet will sustain you for longer between meals. There is a lot of talk about cholesterol and dietary fat, but the science seems to be changing on that, but worth keeping an eye on it just in case. Cool from scratch as much as you can is also an important one. I don’t own a set of scales. They’re largely pointless for a couple of reasons. As a poster has said above, sudden weight loss in a short period of time can sometimes be explained by going to the toilet!! Also, as you exercise more, especially if you do any form of strength training, your muscle mass will increase, so it will seem like you’re putting on weight without an indication of how and people usually assume the worst and think it’s fat and they are not progressing well. The best sort of scales if you want a home set is one that includes a body composition meter, preferably not one that just has electrodes for your feet, but one that has hand grips with electrodes as well. Some gyms have them and the good ones are really expensive (eg Boditrax). This is obviously an academic point at the moment as they are shut. I could go on about body composition meters, because they’re usually not used properly, but all I’ll say is that tracking daily or even weekly is going to lead to disappointment and demotivation, when you see a result that suggests you’re going in the wrong direction - weight can fluctuate over smaller periods of time, but what you want is a trend in the right direction over time.

Without wanting to sound like some guff on Insta, I am not a PT nor do I work in a gym. I am 50 years old, used to have a 36” waist, but bow have a body fat percentage of about 7%. I can quite honestly say that I am in the best shape that I have been in all my life. The book has helped me understand what I needed to do to get to where I want to be and as was said by someone above, having a goal to work to (and a plan on how to get there) is important. Also, anything that promises quick results or magic cures avoid like the plague. Even weight loss from the drug recently reported in the news to aid weight loss can reverse one it is no longer taken.

Good luck!!!

This is meant in the nicest possible way: this is the trouble with monitoring weight too regularly. It becomes demotivating and you may actually be making good progress towards your goals. Also, if you’ve been exercising, you could be gaining muscle.

Nope, gyms closed so I'm excercising far less . My aim is to try to hit my target before they reopen as I need the fuel for my workouts so I'd like to be able to eat my maintenance calories again.

Worth remembering to not be too hard on yourself, it's the back end of a long lockdown, the new year motivation has faded and the cold (really fekking cold) reality has set in. If you're doing better than when you started you're winning!

Finding my resistance to all sweet things has disappeared so thought I'd spread some positivity!

It is a kicker that the gyms are closed. The only suggestion I have is a home HIIT class (there are quite a few on Vimeo, my gym is doing them online). But it really depends if you enjoy that kind of stuff. I managed to snag some weights and a bench before the last lockdown, so I’ve been able to keep going to some extent, though cardio is a little challenging at the mo.

Too right. I’ve had to resort to running, which I reluctantly do while the gyms are closed as I’m a HIIT fiend, and I’ve had to pull back on that after a hamstring injury, which is frustrating. I’m just telling myself that things are going to start changing soon and I will heal if I’m patient. It also encourages me to look for alternatives. Doing something is always a step ahead of doing nothing and at the very least slows any backward progress. My gym directed me to a petition on the .gov website voting for a workout to help out scheme. Not a bad idea.

Kind of. Weight training technically is cardio for me as my heart rate goes pretty damn high . Same with things like high kicks. I just have to take more breaks and not push myself too hard. But no I can't do traditional cardio.

That’s even more impressive then that you have to work around a heart condition. I guess you have a greater reliance on diet. It’s actually heartening to know that some of the longest lived people on the planet don’t do any intense cardio, just walking.

It’s a fantastic book. After reading it, I started reading through the bibliography on his website that formed the basis for some of his research: The Case Against Sugar, Queen of Fats, The Primal Blueprint and The Blue Zones. All interesting in their own way. I’ve recently spotted that Gary Taubs has a new book out too.

It's a bit of a difficult balancing act as my muscles get fatigued quicker so I need the carbs the night before the gym but that makes losing weight hard! It's why I'm trying to shed body fat while they're closed. Walking in general is great but again I do get fatigued, especially if its hilly. I like doing farmers walks and walking lunges in the gym though for a bit of two in one . Doesn't seem like much walking back and forth across the gym but doing it with the weights is a killer for me! The gym is great though as if it gets too much I can stop and drop the weight. If I go walking and it gets too much I can rest but I've still got to get home!

"

I’ll pm you if that’s ok? Walking lunges are a killer. Respect. "

No worries. I'll send you a wink so you can.

From the land of haribos.

I had to increase my calories with 200, cos my cutting plan is too effective, as I am loosing to much weight to quickly, the reason was cos I increased my cardio whilst cutting the calories, but rather than to decrease my cardio, which I like to do. I increase the food instead. I burn about 3500 calories a week from cardio alone which equals to 1 pound of body fat, mostly with walking and running, and yes I enjoy my ice cream treat with my coffee, it is all about calories in v out, there is a fine balance to find the sweet spot of steady weight loss, not too quick but more a steady one

Still haven't lost any more after the initial 4lb in the first month. Going to take a break and eat maintenance calories for a couple of weeks then try again. So close to my target but it's getting harder and harder!

.I keep reading that it's all about calories v calories out but that doesn't work for everyone. I was burning so much more than I was eating, the weight didn't shift. I've now totally lost motivation and since the gym has closed, weight is going on.

Den of Iniquity

Somehow I've lost around 10 pounds since Christmas , but I have just thought it could be that I've been through a lot and not eaten as much ( less crap too ) .

So I've kinda unintentionally lost weight but I'll take it

I’ve finally worked up the determination to start to get myself back to a healthy position.

Today was shopping day so I’ve got lots of healthy stuff in the cupboards, I’m in the right mindset to be good to myself, I’ve weighed in and logged it and serviced my old bike so I’m all ready to go.

Hopefully I will have good new to report soon
