"I've always held doors open for ladies, so yes I would consider myself to be gentlemanly " i held a door open for one of my secondary school teachers who found it sexist. She said that she would let me off this time as i was young. She waa a feminist but i will never forget having that politeness thrown back at me. I will still open doors for anyone though as it is in my nature.

You can't please all people, would she have preferred you to let the door close in her face, probably not. |

I don’t think it’s a case of not pleasing all people. Younger women probably see it as being patronised and maybe think a guy doing that that ulterior motives. I think part of a being a gentleman is good manners so why would he let the door close in her face, that’s different. |

I wasn't saying that he should have let the door slam in her face he did the gentlemanly thing and she had a go at him. |

You said would she have preferred the door slamming in her face which I don’t think anyone on the planet would like that. As I said, some women don’t like doors opening for them. I think it’s a dying trend. I much prefer a man to treat me with respect and act like a gentleman which doesn’t just mean opening doors for women. |

I just hate that how an innocent remark can turn a thread on its head.the guy didn't open the door for his teacher, he held it open, which indicated to me, rightly or wrongly, that he had opened the door to walk through, saw her approaching and held it open fir her to pass throughly. Its the polite thing to do, whatever the sexes involved, In that situation I would if held it open for another guy. |

Maybe the word gentleman is outdated but having basic manners isn’t.
Some of the examples in this thread are just that, irrespective of gender.
If you don’t like the door opened for you, then walk quicker and open it for whoever you are with |

Good evening and Hi, my other half does like to say I am a gent with good manners, but where does that get you these days. Not everyone values those same principles, but those that count do. So maybe yes I do fall into that category. |
