Was just wondering earlier, after yet another automated phone call that I hung up on as usual.
We get our landline through a T.V,Broadband and landline package deal through Virgin.
Our landline is ex directory yet we still recieve these automated add calls.
Our question is,who gives them our number and are they not breaking the Data Protection Act by doing so?
We had a 'live' add call a while back and I asked the woman caller who gave them our number?
Her reply was "That doesn't matter!".
Well,my shirt went up my back like a roller blind,I told her in no uncertain terms that it mattered to us and hung up.
Any one any ideas on the above law regarding these intrusions of privacy?

I had that problem but BT do sell the lists of all phone numbers. But I got rid of the cold calling by ringing BT's special number now if anyone calls my phone they will get fined. Ring BT and ask em the number to stop these calls. |

Join Telephone Preferences. I don't get any unsolicited calls. Once they know you are a member they steer clear of ringing. |

Only prob with theses type of calls is that a lot are from abroad so B.T say they cannot do anything bout them...I still get calls in an American accent telling me I have won a holiday or that I can get help with credit card charges..
These I am informed are from a place in Holland who make a fortune... |

the automated sales calls are nearly all generated by a computer program that sits there and rings random numbers through out the day,( those that you pick up and the line is dead)it then register's that the line is in fact in use, at some point it prints out all those numbers it got a responce to, those are then sold onto telesales companies for them to use to contact people, this program is not subject to the phone register thing run by BT and is run from outside the uk |

Thanks for your help folks,I've registered with the TPS that GrannyCrumpet recomended.
Thanks Gran, hope it works for us.
It was interesting to read what Touvak said about the computers, the crafty gits.
Someone, maybe on here, once said that if you press 'hash button' 7 times in quick succession and hang up,it knackers the equipment up at their end.
We keep doing it but don't know if it works.
Thanks again folks!

Data protection isnt just using your phone number incorrectly, any message or chat is data as soon as entered! Any miss use of data is subject to fines for the company or organisation allowing it and any individual using data is also open to large personal fines as well as a prison sentence! Just putting it it out there!! |

Trouble is, unless you can prove beyond doubt that you have checked all opt out boxes on ANY form you have ever filled in then they can say you gave permission for your number be shared.
You are legally entitles to know where a company got your number from bit it will probably just be a data house rather than a company you know. |

Exactly - how many forms do we fill out in our lives? Do we read everyone closely? Even the most 'reputable' companies sell data. Not that in agree with it |

There's info on the 'Consumers' tab on the OFCOM website. Some of it links to the Information Commissioner Office website.
Not the clearest websites ever built but worth a read. |
